A note from the Principal….
As the seasons change and we move from fall to winter, I can’t help but notice how
quickly our students change as well. Our 6th graders feel comfortable in the hallways
and classrooms, the “middle school transition fear” being well behind them now. All
the students are familiar with their teachers and their schedules, we’ve heard our students
perform in opening music concerts, one sports season is over, and we are exactly in the middle
of our first semester. The school year is in full swing!
As we enter the last half of this semester, I want to thank you for making attendance a priority for
your child. We know that good attendance is one of the main contributing factors in the academic
success of our students. While normally Straub’s attendance percentages are among the top of all
the middle schools in the district, recently we are the lowest. Obviously if your child has a fever or is
very ill we want them to stay home and get well before returning, but we have seen an increase in the
numbers of parents who are pulling their students out for family vacations. Your efforts in planning
appointments and vacations outside of the school day helps immensely in keeping our students
engaged in their learning.
This is particularly important as we move through the school year. Students’ grades, particularly for
our 8th graders, will determine course placement to some extent at the high school, so it’s vital that our
students are well prepared and that they give their best effort. Our mission is to prepare our students
for high school and beyond, and we know that the work we do today prepares them for walking across
that stage to pick up their diploma when they graduate from high school.
We have such a wonderful student body at Straub! I know that a huge part of why they are such
great group of kids is because our parents work in such close partnership with us, and I want
you to know how much we all appreciate and value this partnership. I was so encouraged by
the financial support of you and our greater community as we launched the Support Our
Straub campaign. Because of your generosity, we will be able to offer more diverse and
enriched learning environments for our students! We will be sure to post the many
ways that this money is utilized throughout the school year, so that you can
understand how much we value and appreciate your help.
I hope that you find the information in this newsletter helpful and
useful. If you have suggestions for newsletter topics, need more
information on anything you see here, or you’d just like to check
in and chat, please know that my door is always open.

Una nota de la Directora….
Las estaciones cambian y al terminar el otoño y al entrar al invierno, no puedo dejar
de notar lo rápido que nuestros estudiantes cambian también. Nuestros alumnos de
6to grado se sienten cómodos en los pasillos y en los salones, el “miedo a la transición
de la escuela secundaria” está muy por detrás de ellos ahora. Todos los estudiantes están
familiarizados con sus maestros y sus horarios, hemos escuchado a nuestros estudiantes realizar
en la apertura de los conciertos de música, una temporada deportiva ha terminado, y estamos
exactamente en el centro de nuestro primer semestre.
Al entrar en la última mitad de este semestre, quiero darles las gracias por hacer la asistencia a clases
una de las prioridades para su hijo/a. Sabemos que la buena asistencia es uno de los principales factores
que contribuyen en el éxito académico de nuestros estudiantes. Aunque normalmente los porcentajes
de asistencia de Straub se encuentran entre la parte superior de todas las escuelas secundarias del
distrito, recientemente somos los más bajos. Obviamente, si su hijo/a tiene fiebre o está muy enfermo
queremos que se queden en casa y que se mejoren, antes de regresar, pero hemos visto un aumento en
el número de padres que están llevando a sus hijos de vacaciones durante los días escolares. Sus
esfuerzos en hacer citas o tomar vacaciones fuera del día escolar ayuda en mantener a nuestros
estudiantes a que participen en su aprendizaje.
Esto es especialmente importante a medida que avanzamos a través del año escolar. Las calificaciones de
los estudiantes, especialmente para nuestros estudiantes de 8º grado, determinara colocación de clases en
la escuela preparatoria, por lo que es vital que nuestros estudiantes están bien preparados y que den su
mejor esfuerzo. Nuestra misión es preparar a nuestros estudiantes para la escuela preparatoria y más
allá, y sabemos que el trabajo que hacemos hoy los prepara para caminar a través de esa etapa para
recibir su diploma cuando se gradúan de la escuela preparatoria.
Tenemos estudiantes maravillosos en Straub! Se que una gran parte de por qué son tan buen
grupo de niños se debe a que sus padres trabajan muy bien con nosotros, y quiero que sepan
lo mucho que apreciamos y valoramos esta asociación. Estaba tan agradecida por el
apoyo financiero de ustedes y nuestra comunidad en general, ya que lanzamos la
campaña Apoyo a Nuestro Straub. ¡Gracias a su generosidad, seremos capaces
de ofrecer más diversos y enriquecidos ambientes de aprendizaje para nuestros
estudiantes! Nos aseguraremos de enviar las muchas maneras en que este

AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING IS
IN NEED OF SNACKS FOR THE
STUDENTS. Many students come
into tutoring hungry, a snack can be very
beneficial to helping them with productivity.
Please consider donating some healthy
snacks. Some ideas are - Goldfish, pretzels,
granola bars, etc. Large packages can be
broken down into snack size bags. We also
would appreciate snack size zip lock bags.

peces de colores), pretzels (galletas saladas),
barras de granola, etc. Paquetes grandes se
pueden dividir en bolsas de tamaño bocado.
También agradeceríamos paquetes de

su ayuda en ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a
tener éxito!

INTERESTED IN WRESTLING?
Straub Middle School will begin its tradition of excellence on the mat this year, beginning right after winter break.
Wrestling is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. All wrestlers will compete in 10 meets with the other schools from across
the district. 7th and 8th graders will be able to compete for varsity spots in our lineup, where they take on the best that
the other school has to offer in that weight class. Sixth graders will only compete against other 6th graders. Sign up
forms are available from the main office or from Coach McGladrey. Get your paperwork taken care of early so you can
start practice right away.

La escuela Straub comenzara su tradición de excelencia este año, después de las vacaciones de invierno. La lucha
libre es abierto al sexto, séptimo, y octavo grado. Todos los luchadores competirán 10 veces con las otras escuelas del
distrito. Los de grado 7 y 8 podran competir por lugares en varsity, donde competirán contra lo mejor que las otras
escuelas tienen para ofrecer en esa categoría de peso. Alumnos de sexto grado solamente competirán contra otros
alumnos de sexto grado. Formas para registración están disponibles en la oficina
o con el entrenador McGladrey.
WRESTLING
Come support your school & peers at our first ever FLL Lego Robotics Competition!
The Straub Short Circuits will be competing against other teams in the Willamette Valley in the Qualifying Tournament
on December 6th at Evergreen Space and Museum in McMinnville. Kieryn Boyles, Scott Cooke, Dylan Kaopuiki, Katie
Harms, Hayden Hathaway, Jorge Marquez, Joseph Trujillo, and Megan Vaughn have been working hard to prepare for
all three parts of the competition; Core Values which is sportsmanship and teamwork, Robot Game, and the Research
Project and Presentation. Lego League competitions are fun, challenging, and dynamic for competitors and for the
audience.

Information from the Oregon Department of Education about parents’ right to opt students out of state testing
is available for pick-up from the school office starting January 1, 2016. The information includes the state’s official
notice and opt-out form. Please contact Principal Laura Perez if you have questions about the opt-out process, or
about state tests given in our school.

is collecting photos to be used in this year’s yearbook and
would love a variety of photos from all different sports,
music events, clubs, dances, and more! Parents often
capture the best pictures, so share away! The best photos
will be clear (not blurry), and high resolution, the higher
the better! Please email any photos you have to Kelsey

directly to the site. Photos will be
collected now through early March.
