From the Principal—
Holiday 2015
Inside this issue:
Working together, we can help our kids become the leaders of tomorrow and change
the world. Communication is key in this endeavor, so please feel free to contact your
child’s teachers by email or phone to check on his/her progress. Canvas and Infinite
Campus are available to monitor your child’s grades online. Please contact Ms. Williams
(712-224-7440) if you need help accessing either program. You can also ask your child
to show you his/her grades on his/her laptop. The staff at East High School wants OUR
kids to excel and be college and career ready. If you have concerns or suggestions to
improve our communication, please contact us using a new feature on our website
called Let’s Talk!
Registration will start in January for the 2016-2017 school year. Please talk to your child
about the courses they will be signing up for next year. We offer classes in engineering,
health sciences, construction, graphic design, welding, information technology,
culinary, business, automotive, JROTC, and police science just to name a few. With so
many opportunities to take dual-credit classes, many of our students are graduating
high school with twenty plus college credits for free. [Students must be proficient on
the Iowa Assessments and most dual credit classes have a minimum score on the ACT
or CPT. Please contact your child’s counselor for more information.] During Parent/
Teacher Conferences on February 24th and 25th, you will sign the Verification Sheet for
the courses your child has selected.
th
th
Semester tests will be given on January 11 and 12 and account for 10% of students’
final grades. All students are expected to take semester tests. Students will not be able
to take semester tests early. If a student is absent, they will need to make
arrangements for make-ups. Students who miss a semester test will receive a zero on
the test until it is made up. Students will not receive Incompletes or Conditional Grades
at the end of the semester. Wednesday, January 13th is a Teacher Work Day and there
is no school for students. Report cards will be sent home with students sometime
during the week of January 25, 2016.

Our teachers have been very busy during our Monday Professional Development
meetings. They continue to learn how to integrate technology into their lessons to help
increase student achievement and engagement. Teachers are in the second year of
studying AIW (Authentic Intellectual Work) where they share their lesson plans with
colleagues and provide ideas on how to improve their lessons for students.
Please enjoy the holidays and relish the time spent with family and friends. Have a safe
and joyful holiday season.

On October 29– 31, the Music and Theatre Departments
production of “Little Shop of Horrors” presented the talent of
East High School. The cast did an AMAZING job of creating
the atmosphere of Skid Row. The Director, Ms.Behan, and
her play production class made a lot of the set pieces, while
the main Mushnik’s shop was built by some amazing parents!! Rehearsals began in September, a lot of work and
time was put into this musical from the cast and crew. Over
50 people were either in the production or on stage crew to
make this production as amazing as it was. This show had
many laughs, brought tears to your eyes, and made you
NEVER WANT TO FEED THE PLANTS!
Great job cast and crew on a FANTASTIC show!

The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and
sometimes we must close our schools early, start later, or close school for the entire day. As you know, our weather is
not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day
that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather
provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes
are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them
know.
Parents and guardians notification

Blackboard Phone Message: In the case of late start or school cancellation, a call is sent between 6 - 6:15 a.m. If
school is dismissed early during the day, a call is sent to all phone numbers listed with your child.
Iowa School Alerts: You may subscribe to this free service by clicking on the “Weather Related School Dismissals”
button on the right-hand side of the district web site’s front page at www.siouxcityschools.org. Iowa School Alerts
sends out email notifications to all subscribers.

Social Media: A post is made on the district’s Facebook and Twitter social media pages.
Mobile App: An alert notification is sent to all those who have downloaded the district’s mobile app (available for
iPhones and androids.)
If the schools are dismissed early or if school is called off entirely, there will be NO EVENING
ACTIVITIES. If you have before and after school care, please check with your provider about their procedures.
Please avoid calling the school about delays, cancellations, or dismissals. Unless you see an announcement or receive a phone call, assume school is running as usual.

A menos
