8 FEBRUARY 2015  FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Concluding the introductory section of Mark’s gospel, today’s
reading Mark 1:29-39, further clarifies the nature of the mission
Jesus means to share with his disciples. As we have seen, the healings
and deliverance performed by Jesus are part of his preaching of the Kingdom,
signals that God will triumph over all the forces of evil in the world. This is
brought out by Mark as he recalls and contrasts two moments of healing.
There are practically no details in the gospels of the family circumstances of
the apostles. The account of the curing of Peter’s mother-in-law is therefore
remarkable. It is generally accepted that Mark composed his gospel in Rome
about the time of Peter’s martyrdom. Thus, Peter’s telling of the story of Jesus
would have been an important source of Mark’s material. In this incident
we may well hear Peter’s voice describing a sequence of events. Peter brings
Jesus from the synagogue to his home for a meal; they are surprised to find his
mother-in-law ill with fever; Jesus heals her instantly by taking her hand and
helping her up; fully recovered she gives herself to the service of the Lord.
As we have seen, ‘Who is this man?’ is the subtext of Mark’s narrative. There
is no doubt that Jesus worked miracles. Miracles, as we all know, have a
fascination for many people. Mark is concerned that his readers are not carried
away by the fact that Jesus was a wonder worker. They must understand that
the miracles of Jesus were signs inviting faith in the coming of God’s salvation
into the world. True faith in the Savior will come, in the end, to understand
that the greatest wonder in the life of Jesus of Nazareth was the salvation he
brought to the world as its crucified Savior. Thus, as Mark’s narrative
continues, we hear echoes of how Peter began to learn this lesson at the end
of the eventful Sabbath Mark has described.
By evening, word had spread that there is a miracle worker in town. People
came crowding around Peter’s door, bringing their sick and possessed for
healing. Jesus responded to their appeals; but in his silencing of the ‘devils
who knew who he was’ we are reminded that these people still have to learn
who he is. In the morning there was anxiety when Peter and his companions
find that Jesus was nowhere to be found. “Everyone is looking for you”
(Mark 1:37), they protest, disappointed that he has not made the most of this
instant notoriety. Later they will recognize that Jesus was concerned to lead
the people beyond the wonders he worked to a renewed faith in the coming of
God’s Kingdom – the great theme of the solitary prayer he shared with his
Father. This could only be achieved by his preaching the message of the
Kingdom. And so the ministry he was about to undertake all through Galilee
would combine his preaching and driving out demons.
With my prayers in Christ,
Fr. Patrick

8 FEBRUARY 2015  FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
"He cured many who were sick ... and
he drove out many demons... . Rising
very early before dawn, he left and
went off to a deserted place, where he
prayed. " (Mark 1:34-35)
It is ever-present: the bulletin
deadline. For me, it is like going to the
dentist... every week! I usually start
praying for relief (a.k.a. inspiration)
several days in advance. Last night I
thought that I knew what I would share
with you this week. When I awoke this
morning, I realized that exactly one
year ago was the first time that I sat in
the chair to write. I realized too, that I
have never told you about a most
amazing group of parishioners.
I was with them yesterday. Once
again they gave up another evening
with their loved ones in order to come
together to pray and dream and
scheme with our pastor about you and
me. I recall that Fr. Patrick first called
them together in 2007 just to pray for
us. His dream, that became theirs, was
to bring the Evangelization Retreat to
St. Irenaeus. What a privilege it is for
my wife and I to be in their presence;
to feel and see God working so powerfully, so simply, so demonstrably. It is
because of them, that we are here.
Thank you Jesus!
Rising very early before dawn, he
left and went off to a deserted place,
where he prayed.
It is not easy for me to get up early.
Yet, Jesus teaches me that prayer and
effort is necessary in my life just as it
was in His. Over 200 parishioners
have made the effort to experience
the parish's Evangelization Retreat
thus far. They overcame the scary
word "evangelization" and the lure of
precious time at home to "retreat" from
the world for one weekend. They will
undoubtedly tell you that it was worth
the effort to hear other parishioners
simply tell about how God has, and
continues, to work in their lives.
Parishioners of St. Irenaeus please trust me on this - you will not
be disappointed when you generously
give your time to God for one weekend!
Next opportunity: March 13-15.

REFLECTION
The world can be a pretty chaotic place. There’s war and
violence of every sort. There are natural and man-made
disasters, famine, and disease. How is a person supposed
to have any hope, especially when our personal lives
can be as chaotic as the world outside? Friends grow
apart. There’s conflict among families and illness, loss,
and disappointment. However, today’s readings remind
us though that healing and compassion are two of the
hallmarks of Jesus’s work and presence. Yes, there is
the chaos in the world. We see the same chaos in the
Gospel. But, Jesus puts it all in order. Into the midst of
evil, sickness, pain, confusion, trouble, and sadness
comes Jesus. And with him comes wholeness, health,
calm, and healing. The other thing we should take note
of is that in spite of a very long “to-do” list, Jesus prays.
Jesus goes to the Father with his need, and his gratitude,
and his love, and gains the strength to do what must be
done.
ACTION
Look ahead at your week. Which day will be your busiest
or most difficult? Now look at that day and figure out
when you will pray. It doesn’t have to be long; simply five
or ten minutes of quiet reflection, reading the Scriptures,
or listening to music that reminds you that you have an
unending source of goodness at your disposal.
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
What role does prayer play in your life? How might you
find more time for prayer so that it can be a source of
goodness and strength for you?
Do you ever talk with your family about your faith? Why
or why not?
