August 23, 2015 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Fr. Rich Danyluk, SS.CC. Fr. Bill Moore, SS.CC. Celebrating 40 Years of Priesthood August 23, 1975 — August 23, 2015 May the blessings released through your hands cause windows to open in darkened minds. May the sufferings your calling brings, be but winter before spring. May the companionship of your doubt, restore what your beliefs leave out. May the secret hungers of your heart, harvest from emptiness its sacred fruit. May your solitude be a voyage, into the wilderness and wonder of God. May your words have the prophetic edge, to enable the heart to hear itself. May the silence where your calling dwells foster your freedom in all you do and feel. May you find words full of divine warmth to clothe the dying in the language of dawn. May the slow light of the Eucharist, be a sure shelter around your future. John O’Donohue Page 2 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time This Sunday we will celebrate forty years of priesthood for Fr. Rich and Fr. Bill. Though there are many of you who know them and can recite beautiful stories about how they have touched your lives. I can only speak from my perspective and my heart. Fr. Bill has this ability to look at ordinary things and find beauty. Items that have been discarded sometimes once treasured but no longer needed he gives them life in his art. There is a uniqueness about him and a love for what he does. He is living his dream and for those of us who still don’t know what our dreams are – he is someone you want to be around and someone who you wish you were more alike. His positive outlook, his love for nature and his ability to put you at ease are just a few of the many gifts he brings to this parish. Fr. Rich has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I have ever known. His heart and his passion for the parishioners of HNM drive him. He constantly wants to be able to give more of himself. He sees beyond your capabilities and challenges you to stretch yourself. He guides you along the way and somehow you find yourself accomplishing things you never thought you could do. He has this great sense of humor that sometimes catches you off-guard. He writes the most thoughtful cards and notes. Once you been around Fr. Rich he will forever change you for the better. Like Fr. Bill, these are only a fraction of the many gifts he too, brings to this parish. I found this quote from Archbishop Oscar Romero and I think it is perfect for today. It helps now and then to step back and take a long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection, no pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and objectives include everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing this. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. Nosotros somos obreros, no maestros constructores, ministros, no mesías. ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME (LAUDATO SI’) Is the new appeal from Pope Francis to “every person living on this planet” for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is written with both hope and resolve, looking to our common future with candor and humility. Helping the poor requires more than just handouts: (128) We were created with a vocation to work. The goal should not be that technological progress increasingly replace human work, for this would be detrimental to humanity. Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfilment. Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs. The broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work. Page 6 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23, 2015 HNM Parish Welcomes Candice Brown My name is Candice Brown and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Youth Minister here at Holy Name of Mary Parish. For the past decade, I have had the honor of serving the Church as a youth minister and music minister in the Diocese of San Bernardino, Diocese of Orange, and Archdiocese of Los Angeles at different capacities. I have been blessed to walk with so many teens and their families on their spiritual journey, and witness them powerfully encounter Christ through the Sacraments and special times of worship and community. When I am not running around the church doing ministry, I like to spend my free time playing and writing music, going to concerts, dining at new foodie restaurants, and finding people to play a game of Scrabble with me (which is far and few). I greatly look forward to my new adventure of growing in discipleship with all of you here at Holy Name of Mary! Please keep the ministry in prayer during this time of transition, and feel free to come over and say hello!
