A Letter from Our Pastor
The Hope of Christmas Amidst Anguish
So much anguish: shootings in
our quiet towns, terror around the
globe, personal trials and
tribulations. Anguish is ubiquitous
in our human experience. J.R.R. Tolkien, in a letter to
his son Christopher, wrote, "If anguish were visible,
almost the whole of this benighted planet would be
enveloped in a dense dark vapour shrouded from the
amazed vision of the heavens." How is our anguish
shrouded? Most likely by denial, fear and a lack of
trust and hope.
Recently the New York Times reported that
"Something startling is happening to middle-aged
white Americans. Unlike every other age group, unlike
every other racial and ethnic group, unlike their
counterparts in other rich countries, death rates in this
group have been rising, not falling. That finding was
reported by two Princeton economists, Angus Deaton,
who last month won the 2015 Nobel Prize in
Economic Science, and Anne Case. Analyzing health
and mortality data from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention and from other sources, they
concluded that rising annual death rates among this
group are being driven not by the big killers like heart
disease and diabetes but by an epidemic of suicides
and afflictions stemming from substance abuse:
alcoholic liver disease and overdoses of heroin and
prescription opioids."
Not very encouraging. On Monday night I
watched (yet again) A Charlie Brown Christmas,
which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In
the middle of the show, my mind stilled as I listened to
Linus (yet again) share with Charlie Brown what
Christmas is all about. It is about a child being born in
Bethlehem, and bringing glad tidings, and fostering
good will among men. Christmas reminds us that
God does not hide behind a dense dark vapour,
unconcerned with the cares of men and women. God
shows us his immense love (yet again) in the gift of
His Son. The gift is given freely and lovingly.
The anguish will be ever present. Life has its
calamities and tragedies. But hope is always there for
us. As the two scientists named above have shown,
lack of hope can and is literally killing us. God's gift is
so generous and lavish. We pray during Advent for
the gift of trust: Trust as expressed in the simple
words of Linus. Trust as God has always offered and
Christ has modeled. This year, get to know
Christ. Christ has broad shoulders. He can help us
carry our anguish!

LA ESPERANZA DE LA NAVIDAD EN MEDIO DE LA ANGUSTIA

Demasiada angustia, tiroteos en nuestros pueblos tranquilos, el terror en todo el mundo, los juicios
personales y tribulaciones. La angustia es ubicua a nuestra naturaleza humana. J.R.R. Tolkien, en una
carta a su hijo Christopher, escribió así: "Si la angustia fuera visibles, casi la totalidad de este planeta
sumido en la ignorancia se envolvería en un denso vapor oscuro cubriendo la visión asombrosa de los
cielos." ¿Cómo se oculta nuestra angustia? Lo más probable por la negación, el miedo y la falta de
confianza y esperanza.
El periódico New York Times informó lo siguiente: "Algo sorprendente está sucediendo a los
estadounidenses blancos de mediana edad. A diferencia de cualquier otro grupo de edad, a diferencia de
todos los demás grupos raciales y étnicos, a diferencia de sus homólogos de otros países ricos, las tasas de
mortalidad en este grupo han ido en aumento, no cae. Ese hallazgo fue reportado por dos economistas de
Princeton, Angus Deaton, que ganó el mes pasado el Premio Nobel 2015 en Ciencias Económicas, y
Anne Case. El análisis de los datos de salud y mortalidad de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención
de Enfermedades y de otros fuentes, llegaron a la conclusión de que el aumento de las tasas de mortalidad
anuales en este grupo están siendo no impulsado por los grandes asesinos como las enfermedades

No es muy alentador. El lunes por la noche, vi una vez más A Charlie Brown Christmas. Se está
celebrando su 50 aniversario este año. En el medio del espectáculo, mi mente se quedó inmóvil mientras
escuchaba Linus (una vez más) con Charlie Brown de lo que se trata la Navidad. Se trata de un niño que
nació en Belén, y trayendo buenas nuevas, y fomentar la buena voluntad entre los hombres. La Navidad
nos recuerda que Dios no se esconde detrás de un denso vapor oscuro, indiferente a las preocupaciones de
los hombres y las mujeres. Dios nos muestra su inmenso amor (otra vez) en el don de su Hijo. El don es
dado libremente y con amor.
La angustia estará siempre presente. La vida tiene sus calamidades y tragedias. Pero, la esperanza
siempre está ahí para nosotros. Como los dos científicos anteriores han demostrado, la falta de esperanza
puede (y lo es), literalmente matarnos. El regalo de Dios es tan generoso y pródigo. Oremos durante el
Adviento por el don de la confianza. La confianza, como se expresa en las simples palabras de Linus. La
confianza, como Dios siempre ha ofrecido y Cristo ha modelado. Este año, lleguemos a conocer a Cristo.
Cristo tiene los brazos abiertos. Él puede ayudarnos a llevar nuestra angustia!
