Granada es una tierra de paisajes artísticos, cultura agrícola y gastronomía
basada en los productos de su fértil vega, que contrasta con señoriales y
nevadas montañas.
Granada is a province of artistic landscapes surrounded by mansions and
snow-covered mountains, with an agricultural culture and gastronomy that is
based on the magnificent produce of its fertile lowlands.
Muestra de ello resultan los magníficos productos que ofrece al visitante tanto
en el plato como en la copa.

Andalucía, y Granada en concreto, posee una gran
tradición en el cultivo de la vid y la elaboración
de vinos. La riqueza y progreso de esta tierra está
claramente ligada a la fusión de culturas que han
dejado su impronta en ella a lo largo de la historia.
Existen hallazgos arqueológicos y referencias
documentales que nos vinculan al cultivo de la
vid desde la era romana. Se conoce que con los
árabes, pese a la prohibición coránica, se bebía
vino en abundancia y que, con mayor o menor
disimulo, se realizaba un activo comercio del
vino. La Puerta del Vino, entrada a la Medina de
la Alhambra, puede considerarse un estandarte
de la tradición vitícola y el comercio del vino en
el Reino de Granada.
También durante la Reconquista, los productos
de Granada como el vino, los frutos secos o los
productos de la huerta, eran muy apreciados en
tierras lejanas de todo el Mediterráneo.
A finales del s.XIX, los viñedos granadinos sufrieron
una invasión de la filoxera y aunque muchos
viñedos escaparon de esta plaga debido al contraste
térmico y ubicación de las plantaciones, se planteó
la modificación en la selección de las variedades
idóneas para la producción de calidad y la mejora
de los métodos de elaboración y crianza.
Si bien hasta hace poco tiempo la producción se
destinaba a consumo propio o a la venta a granel,
la inquietud empresarial y la fe en las propias
posibilidades son los factores que, en muy poco
tiempo, han puesto a los vinos de Granada en el
mapa vitivinícola español.
Dentro de la zona de producción de los vinos
protegidos por la mención vino de calidad de
Granada, se distingue la subzona “Contraviesa
Alpujarra”.

Andalucia in general, and Granada in particular,
have a great tradition in vine-cultivation and
wine-making. The richness and progress of this
land is clearly linked to the fusion of cultures that
have left their mark during its history.
There are documented references and archeological evidence which connect vine cultivation to
this area since the Roman period. It is known that
during the Arabic period – in spite of its prohibition in the Koran –wine was consumed in abundance, and an active wine trade developed more
or less in the open. La Puerta del Vino -The Wine
Door-, entrance to the Alhambra’s Medina, is
considered a standard of the wine tradition, and
its commerce, in the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
As well during the Reconquest, the produce of
Granada, such as wine, dried fruits and vegetables, were highly thought of throughout the entire
Mediterranean region.
At the end of 19th century, Granada’s vineyards
suffered a bout of philloxera, and although many
of the vines survived this plague thanks to the high
thermal contrast and the location of the fields, it
was an opportunity to set up some changes in the
vine varieties in order to improve quality as well
as production and aging methods.
Until recently production was destined for
private consumption and on-tap retail, but the
vitality of local enterprises, and their faith in their
own potential, has firmly established the wines
of Granada on the Spanish wine map with full
honours.
Inside the zone of production of the wines
protected by the mention Quality Wines from
Granada, there is distinguished the subfield
“Contraviesa Alpujarra”.

Los vinos granadinos poseen características muy
específicas que los hacen únicos debido a tres
factores fundamentales:

La altitud media de los viñedos granadinos se
encuentra a unos 1.200 metros.

around 1,200 metres above sea level.
CLIMA
CLIMATE
Con influencia mediterránea y atlántica al tiempo.
La temperatura y las corrientes frescas del aire de
Sierra Nevada producen un efecto beneficioso
que predispone las uvas para un mayor desarrollo
de polifenoles que confieren al vino el color, la
suavidad, la estructura tánica.
Mediterranean and Atlantic influence at the same
time. The temperature and the fresh air currents
coming from Sierra Nevada mountain range produce a positive effect which allows grapes to better develop polyphenols and substances that give
the wine its color, roundness and tannic structure.
TIERRA
Presenta composiciones variables de pizarra y
arcilla que confieren condiciones idóneas a los
vinos granadinos. La orografía de terrazas laderas y
vertientes hace que el trabajo en las viñas requiera
más mano de obra que en otros casos al no poderse
mecanizar el proceso de recogida.
La producción de uva ha estado ligada
tradicionalmente a las zonas altas y medias de
los sistemas montañosos de la provincia, lo cual
provoca oscilaciones térmicas importantes y muy
bajas temperaturas alargando y mejorando el
proceso de maduración.
Nos encontramos ante productos de autor con
limitación productiva para conseguir la máxima
calidad de la uva. El resultado están siendo vinos
de gran personalidad; blancos frescos y fragantes,
tintos sabrosos de gran complejidad y espumosos
de burbuja fina y elegante acidez.
Production of grapes has been connected
traditionally to high and medium altitude areas
of the mountain systems within the province:
being situated there brings considerable thermal
fluctuations and extremely low temperatures,
slowing down and improving the grapes ripening
process.
We are faced with artisans products with limited
production for maximum of quality grapes. This
results in fresh and fragrant whites; tasty and
complex reds; and fine and elegant sparkling
wines.
LAND
Terrain with different compositions of slate
and clay, gives Granda’s vineyards the perfect
setting. Characterized by terraces, hillsides and
slopes, makes the mechanisation of the collection
process impossible, so working in the vineyards is
more labour-intensive than in other places.
VARIETIES
Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, excepcionalmente
aclimatadas.
In the last years an intense work has been carried
out to recover the jewels of the autochthonous
viticulture: Vijiriega, Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez,
in white varieties, or Tempranillo, Garnacha and
Monastrell, in the red ones. As well addapting
international grapes as Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot or Syrah between others.

variety of fruity and flowery perfumes that reflect
the natural environment and the historical cultural legacy of the province.

Granada cultiva 5.500 hectáreas de terreno de
viñedos, con los que producen entre 30 y 40
millones de kilos de uva al año.
Actualmente 22 son las bodegas y cerca de 100 los
viticultores adscritos al Órgano Gestor.
El sector granadino, más unido que nunca, está
realizando un gran esfuerzo para conseguir
el reconocimiento y posicionamiento de la
Denominación de Origen Protegida.
Granada grows 5,500 hectares of vineyards that
produce between 30 and 40m kilos of grapes per
year.
Today, the managerial and administrative body is
formed of 22 wine-estates and around 100 vinegrowers.
The wine sector, and its unity, is doing a great
effort to get the recognition and positioning of the
protected designation of origin.
