—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.

us to learn what our new
projects are, and what you
can do to help.
Words of Wisdom: When you
do things from your soul – you feel a
river moving in you – a joy. -Rumi
October is Breast Cancer awareness
month. Those of us whose loved
ones have passed away or battle
this terrible disease know the
devastating effects that they face
every day. We are challenged to
find hope and bring comfort when
we are struggling to make sense of
it ourselves. We hope you too will
find a moment to pray in solidarity
for those whose lives are linked with
ours through their suffering.
Every October we make our Pink
Memory book available. It holds
many names of loved ones whose
lives have been touched by the
suffering and battle that is Cancer.
We at the Gift Shop pray for those
whose names are entered there on a
daily basis. Please feel free to come
in and add a name to our Memory
book and join the many others who
have shared with us. We are also
making pocket Rosaries, Rosary
bracelets, and Rosaries that you can
pass on to someone you love. There
will be healing prayers and healing
Saint Medals as well that you might
take to someone in need.
If you haven’t been in to visit us
lately this is a nice time to visit. The
crowds of summer are gone and as
much as we enjoy the excitement
there is something to be said for the
quiet. We will be looking forward
to Advent and the Christmas season.
In the meantime we enjoy this short
respite and use it for prayer and
reflection.
The Gift Shop is open 7 days
a week, from 9-5PM. Come in
and browse, sit a while and read
– listen to the music – share a
moment of fellowship. Our staff is
knowledgeable and always eager to
assist you whether you are looking
for a special gift or just looking. We
welcome you as always.

pledges totalling $38,275, which is
just over 96% of our Diocesan goal
of $40,000. Any monies pledged
over that amount will be returned
to our parish.
If you have not yet pledged, we
hope you will consider doing so.
Envelopes are available in the
church, or at the parish office.
Call 781-8220.
We thank everyone for their ongoing
support of Old Mission Parish.
Thank you to all who participated
and attended the program on
Human Trafficking. We are now
more informed as a community
about this on-going and tragic
problem in general and in our
community. Social Justice is
sponsoring several events this Fall:
• Fall Harvest Drive (Oct. 25-26
and Nov. 1-2). Parishioners
are asked to bring to church
items needed by the Prado Day
Center, the only day center
serving the homeless population
in the region. (See and cut out
list of items in this bulletin)
• A Social Justice second
collection in the fall. Stay tuned
for details.
• We will be cooking turkeys in
November for the Family Care
Network. If you’d like to help,
call Delores at 543-4064.
• For the holidays we will be
helping with Salvation Army
Bell Ringing. Call Moira

Mark Your Calendars for this
Workshop: Why Should you
Pre-Plan Your Own Funeral?
As in Baptism we became a member of
the Catholic Church family, in death we
preserve our faith, our Catholic rites, and
our unquestioning beliefs in God: Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit. Keeping consistent
with your Catholic beliefs, it is important
for you to clearly record your wishes for
a Catholic Funeral service. You can make
decisions now as to what mortuary to use,
what services you would like, readings,
music, flowers, and more. You can make
your choices and arrangements now,
without feeling the pressure to rush, and
in doing so you make it easier on your
family to fulfill your wishes.
Mission San Luis Obispo invites you
to a special workshop on Wednesday,
November 12th at 6:00 pm in the Mission
Parish Hall. Facilitators for the workshop
are Rev. Russell Brown, Pastor of Mission
SLO, Deacon Chuck Roeder, and Gayne
Pinto Bennett. All are welcome. For more
information contact Deacon Chuck at

Old Mission School
Through the Catholic
school, the people
of faith evangelize,
educate, and contribute
to the development of the mission
of the People of God. We as teachers
and staff of Old Mission School,
support the parents as primary
educators of their children. We
believe that a Catholic school serves
parents and their children well by
providing sound education grounded
in Catholic values. As always, we ask
for your continued prayers for the
teachers, staff, and families of Old
Mission School that our children,
in God’s name, will dedicate their
lives to living the vision of Jesus and
handing it on to future generations.
Old Mission Catholic School is
currently accepting applications for
preschool through eighth grade. Our
entire school community is dedicated to
the development of socially responsible
citizens for the twenty-first century
who are spiritually empowered,
academically enriched, and morally
accountable for their actions. For more
information or to obtain an application,
please visit our website at www.

In a country that has a strong commitment to separation
of church and state, it is noteworthy that our money, both
bills and coins, is inscribed with the words “In God We
Trust.” The history of this motto and its relation to our
currency goes back to the Civil War. Changing it has never
gotten much support. It serves as a helpful reminder about
where our true security lies.
In the Gospel, the Pharisees, along with some supporters
of the Roman regime called Herodians, get into the act of
trying to trap Jesus into taking a stand that would get him
in trouble with either the Roman authorities or his own
people. But Jesus, as much the fox as Herod was reputed
to be, slips out of their net by noting that there can be
different loyalties without a loss of priorities.
Jesus calls on them to produce the idolatrous coin that no
devout Jew should carry, since it declared Caesar to be a
god. Then he advises them to return to the emperor the coin
that bears his image but to return to God what bears God’s
image, that is, themselves, made in the image of God.
A new order is revealed when we give God’s image back
to God by our words and deeds, showing God’s image to
others. When this happens, the motto “In God We Trust”
becomes not merely stamped on paper or branded on
copper, but encountered in living flesh and blood.
—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
Living God’s Word
We pray to recognize what it means to be a good citizen,
giving to our country what is needed for the support of
the common good. And we pray to discern wisely when
loyalty to Christ and the building up of the kingdom of
God may call for a response that challenges what civil
authorities propose.
