As George Eliot wrote, “Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” Perhaps in no cultural tradition does this adage ring more true than with the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos, a folkloric tradition in which the lives of loved ones past are celebrated in a lively and festival-like manner. Over the course of several weeks, Lawndale hosts a series of exhibitions, artistled workshops and public programs that engage students, patrons and the public alike with the many facets of this Mexican tradition. The retablo exhibition in the O’Quinn gallery showcases the work of nearly 250 Texas artists who have created, and generously donated to Lawndale’s benefit auction, small, devotional paintings fashioned on (or integrating) a piece of tin. Students from twenty-four Houston schools have spent many weeks in class developing exhibitions for this celebration and their artwork is on view in our Cavnar and Horton galleries. The community ofrenda in the O’Quinn gallery provides a constant source of reflection and allows viewers to consider the faithfully departed and the continual cycle of life. Furthering this important element of the Día de los Muertos ritual, Lawndale will host an evening of musical and literary ofrenda with original works by ROCO, Musiqa and Inprint. We hope that you will take advantage of this wonderful evening, as well as the artist-led workshops that will explore the Mexican tradition of paper cutting and the creation and decoration of sugar skulls. Last, but not least, we look forward to a series of performances by Mixteco Ballet Folklorico and Houston Grand Opera during our incredibly popular Family Day Fiesta. I would like to thank our Día de los Muertos Event Chairs, Calia and Peter Pettigrew, for their terrific efforts and enthusiasm, especially with regard to the Gala and Silent Auction. As always, Lawndale is indebted to the generous and steadfast support of the Board of Directors and to patrons and artists throughout the community who demonstrate their support for this event year after year. Finally, a heartfelt thanks to Lawndale’s excellent and committed staff and team of volunteers who work tirelessly to produce these events for the enjoyment of us all.
