It is a good month to reflect on the value and importance of the institution of marriage and family life. In his Apology, Justin Martyr writes to the Roman Emperors about Christian families: “You, Roman emperors, multiply the laws about family, which have proven to be incapable of stopping its dissolution. Come to see our families and you will be convinced Christians are your better allies in the reform of society, not your enemies.” Heat in The Church Due to a gas line break and needed repairs, there is currently no heat in the Church. We are working with NW Natural Gas and Hendrix Heating to get the repairs completed as soon as possible. At this time, we are unsure of the completion date. We apologize for the inconvenience! Justin says COME AND SEE our families, they are the most important element in the reformation of society. Here are some ideas to raise Christian Families: 1. Read the Sunday readings together as a family before coming to Mass. Or discuss as a family what you’ve learned from the theme of that Sunday Mass. It enhances one’s experience of the Eucharist and, at the same time, it provides a kind of conversation that allows us to open up in a deeper way and reflect together. 2. Foster the habit of good conversation. This may be done in several ways. Maybe by designating a particular evening of the week in which each one at table can share something they’ve learned or some positive experience they had. For someone who has never tried an exercise like this, it may seem that it wouldn’t help much, that this sharing is not spontaneous, that it’s a forced thing, and so on. But trust me, I was not enthusiastic about it initially, but came to realize how much you learn. It raises the level of a conversation, teaches one to listen, to share more openly. And the habit of good conversation in a family is then something that carries over to other relationships, making them work better: friendships, dating, and also prayer. 3. Pray Together as Family: The CCC calls the family the Ecclesia Domestica: “The Christian Family constitutes a specific revelation and realization of ecclesial communion, and for this reason it can and should be called a domestic Church”. It is a community of faith, hope, and charity…” CCC 2204. When you pray together as couple or family, you make more manifest the invisible presence of Jesus among you. These are some things you can do: pray the rosary together, bless meals, pray for each other, etc. Have good month of October! Fr Ignacio VIGIL OF PRAYER FOR ALL SAINTS On November 1, we celebrate the feast of All Saints. This year it is not a holy day of obligation, but you are welcome to join us for this feast. We will have Mass at 8 a.m. on Saturday November 1. In preparation for this Mass, and as an opportunity to restore the Catholic origin of the feast of All Saints, we will do a EUCHARISTIC VIGIL OF PRAYER from Friday, October 31 till Saturday, November 1. We will start with a holy hour on Friday at 9 p.m. and keep the Blessed Sacrament exposed till Saturday 8 a.m. Take Time Invest Yourself Ask Questions Meet People Explore Catholicism The Inquiry Period of the RCIA continues on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the USH Please contact Barb at 541-757-1988, [email protected] for more information. The Bereavement Committee is hosting a continental breakfast for family members and friends who have lost a loved one this year. We may not be aware that you have lost a loved one, and we encourage you to join us. We are meeting on Sunday, November 2, after the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the Upper Social Hall. About Legalization of Recreational Drugs Pope Francis has come out strongly against the legalization of recreational drugs. He is especially concerned about the effect of drugs on our youth. On June 20, 2014, he said: “Attempts, however limited, to legalize so-called ‘recreational drugs’, are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired effects.” A poll last week by an Oregon television news station showed that the legalization of recreational marijuana has a slight edge of voters in favor. Our efforts to educate people and encourage Catholics to vote could make the difference. Turnout of senior voters is especially important. Please encourage Catholics to vote NO on 91 in the upcoming November elections. You can also the read the column of Archbishop Sample: Am I my brother's keeper? LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Ef 2:1-10; Sal 100 (99):1b-5; Lc 12:13-21 Martes: Ef 2:12-22; Sal 85 (84):9ab-14; Lc 12:35-38 Miércoles: Ef 3:2-12; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lc 12:39-48 Jueves: Ef 3:14-21; Sal 33 (32):1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19; Lc 12:49-53 Viernes: Ef 4:1-6; Sal 24 (23):1-4ab, 5-6; Lc 12:54-59 Sábado: Ef 4:7-16; Sal 122 (121):1-5; Lc 13:1-9 Domingo: Ex 22:20-26; Sal 18 (17):2-4, 47, 51; 1 Tes 1:5c-10; Mt 22:34-40 DEJAD QUE LOS NIÑOS VENGAN A MI...
