We could imagine that for anyone to live at the time of Jesus and meet Jesus in person it would be a great privilege and grace. The eagerness of people to meet Pope Francis personally during his recent visit to our country, is any yardstick to go by, we would be lining up to catch a glimpse of Jesus in person. Imagine you were present when this young man of the Gospel of today asks “What must I do to inherit eternal life” (Mark 10:17). This question of the ‘secret to the eternal life’ was in your mind too. This meeting between the man and Jesus showed such promise and yet ended so badly. It is the only time in all the Gospels that someone who was called by Jesus went away sad! The disturbing thing is that we can see aspects of ourselves in this man. The man was genuinely interested in growing closer to God. Like this man we are also searching to come closer to God and we want to inherit eternal life. Jesus looked steadily at the man and was filled with love for him. Some scholars believe that Mark intends us to understand that Jesus embraced or hugged the man. We know that Jesus loves each of us also. Jesus knew that he was capable of achieving even greater heights of holiness so Jesus invited him to raise his goal, “You are lacking in one thing.” (Mark 10:21) ‘Εv σε υστερει’(Hen se historei), ‘one thing you lack’. Υστερει also means ‘being in need’ and ‘failing.’ Jesus is saying to the rich young man. ‘For all your wealth, something is missing.’ We are all lacking in at least one thing and perhaps many things in order to achieve more holiness and come closer to God. Then Jesus gave the man the challenge which he was unwilling to accept; go, sell, give, come, follow. The young man was unwilling to make this sacrifice and went away sad. There is a great deal of wisdom in today's gospel. But we are frightened by it no less than the man who came to Jesus. The truth is that many of us in today's world and in today's church have an embarrassment of riches. We don't hear much about "creature comforts" anymore, perhaps because we have become so accustomed that they no longer appear to be comforts. Yesterday's comfort becomes today's necessity. While much of the world goes hungry, we are trapped by ‘consumerism’. But the word remains that twoedged sword. We stand under its judgment. Most of us cannot walk away from everything tomorrow. But all of us are called to personal assessment. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with money and possessions. We have use for them, to be sure. But, in today's Gospel Lesson, Jesus is telling us one more time that when we make money and possessions the number one priority in our life, we receive them not as a blessing but as a curse, in the sense that we have shut out God. If God becomes our all, then we live more simply, ask more questions about accruing possessions, and are more conscious of the needy. It is not a question of surrendering things. That just creates a vacuum. It is because we have a spiritual treasure already in our heart that there just is not room for much more. So the question remains. What stands between us and God? What blocks our path? Like Solomon we pray for wisdom - the wisdom to know the answer. Fr. Pope Francis delivered a passionately pro life message to Congress. He spoke on behalf of life from conception to natural death, for the elderly, the poor and the young who are so confused by the destruction of the family that they don’t form families of their own. He also came out against the death penalty, selling arms to “those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society,” saying that the motive behind these sales is “money; money that is drenched in blood.” He looked right at members of Congress and referred to the “shameful and culpable silence” in the face of this arms trade. He defended the environment and called for economics that provide jobs rather than just funneling money into the hands of a few. The pope repeatedly called on members of Congress to act on behalf of the common good and to lay aside their destructive differences; to dialogue with one another. He also warned these powerful people that if they used the same destructive tactics as those who attack this country, they would become like them. His message was a call to government in the service of life, justice and the common good. He spoke directly to the assembled members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, the Supreme Court justices and members of the Cabinet, telling them that the call of a politician was a call to serve the common good. He spoke to them as the shepherd of souls that he is, as the Vicar of Christ. I’ve read a number of comments flaming the pope for this speech. It appears that those on the left and the right don’t like it when the man who stands in the shoes of the fisherman preaches Christ in public. What they want is a oneway address that blasts their political opponents and pats everyone on their side of the political aisle on the back. The truth is, we can not have two gods. Jesus told us that we can not serve two masters. If our political party is where we look for our moral guidance; if following either the R or the D is how we plan to justify ourselves before God, then the R or the D is our little ‘g’ god. I’ve been reading politicians for a long time. They’re like an open book to me. And what I saw on my television screen today was a big group of puffed up politicos who had no intention of being persuaded or converted by the humble man in white. Their politics, in fact, their political careers, are their little ‘g’ gods. Despite attempts by leadership in both parties to stifle the Congressional practice of grandstanding by applauding at one another in a partisan manner, they engaged in that specific bit of tom-foolery, anyway. Their own leadership could not make them behave themselves in a non-partisan fashion, not even for a 30-minute address. The message in all this — and there is a powerful message in it — is that no one, including elected officials, can follow their political party and Jesus Christ at the same time. It appears from what I saw today that many members of Congress have already chosen who and what they will follow, and it isn’t Jesus. Their careers in politics trump everything, including their immortal souls.
