SAINT MARY`S AND SAINT CHARLES

SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES
Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo
January 17, 2016 / 17 d e Enero d e 2016
Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last Saturday, Cardinal O’Malley ordained seven men to the
transitional diaconate. They are called transitional deacons
because they are on track to be ordained priests for the Church in
Boston on May 21, along with two other previously ordained
deacons. Every priest must be ordained a deacon first. Deacons
are not junior priests. They are not healers like the priest. For
example, they cannot hear confessions or anoint the sick.
Deacons are ministers of charity. They are called to be the bridge
between the people and the priest. They are also called in most
cases to be husbands and fathers except if they are transitional
deacons. Transitional deacons make the promise of celibacy
when they are ordained. All deacons are a great gift to the
Church. The men ordained on Saturday were Chris Bae,
Matthew Conley, Patrick Fiorillo, Tom Gignac, Steven Leblanc,
Huan Ngo and Thomas Sullivan. Many parishioners know
Deacon Matthew from when he lived here as a seminarian about
five years ago. Deacon Patrick is assigned presently to Our Lady
Comforter of the Afflicted. We congratulate these men and pray
that they have many years of ministry. Let us pray for these men
that they minister with grace and humility as they prepare for the
next ordination to the priesthood… may the good work that has
begun in them be brought to fulfillment.
– Father Michael
PRO-LIFE MARCH
This Friday will mark one of the darkest and saddest days in our
history of our country. It is the anniversary of the day when five
men with power to enforce their views decided that you can kill
a child and get away with it. 4,000 human lives, babies, will be
killed today because of the Supreme Court’s decision. The
numbers are staggering. Who knows if one of those children
would have discovered a cure for a type of cancer? It doesn’t
even have to be that heroic. Who knows if one of those children
may have cared for an elderly mother… or adopted a foster
child? Who knows if one of those children might have said a
kind word that changed a person’s day? We know the promises
that were made by the advocates of legal abortion. There would
never be any unwanted children. Women’s lives would be better
in every way. Instead we have the feminization of poverty and a
foster care system that can’t handle the numbers of children in
their custody. The history of our country has shown that men
have made other huge mistakes in the past and they were
changed. Legal abortion will go away or the country will decline
to the point of collapse. No culture or country that fails to protect
its most vulnerable or the defenseless ever survives. In a few
weeks, we will be holding the annual baby shower to help
expectant mothers who need help. This Friday, parishioners will
be going down to Washington, joining hundreds of thousands of
others; not to protest but rather to march and witness and to
simply say that LIFE IS GOOD and DEATH IS NOT.

ON THE BULLETIN COVER
St. Francis’ Sermon to the Birds
St. Francis came across a flock of birds that did not fly away
upon his arrival. He gave a sermon to them, and they would only
fly away after receiving his blessing. The surprised reaction to
the extraordinary event can be seen in the expression on the face
of the accompanying companion. (Fresco by Giotto)

VOCATION PRAYER
Father, we are your people,
the work of your hands.
So precious are we in your sight
that you sent your Son, Jesus.
Jesus calls us to heal the broken-hearted,
to dry the tears of those who mourn,
to give hope to those who despair,
and to rejoice in your steadfast love.
We, the baptized, realize our call to serve.
Help us to know how.
Call forth from among us priests, sisters,
brothers and lay ministers.
With our hearts you continue to love your people.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus revealed
himself to his disciples and they began to believe in him. Every
day, God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can
respond in faith and trust.
Belief entails a W ho rather than a What. Our own encounters
with Jesus in prayer, through others in a cry for help, in a lonely
person’s plea for companionship, in struggling with daily living,
in the love of family and friends; all are true manifestations of
God’s glory which also invites us to respond to divine Presence
with belief.
Lord, thank you for all of the “Epiphanies of your Love” in our
lives. May we find you in all of the common, ordinary signs all
around us. Lord, thank you for our call to be Vincentians. May
we be the “Epiphany of your love” to those who are suffering.
Lord, thank you for our family and our friends. May we share
together your hope and love, your laughter and joy .Amen

NEIGHBORHOOD ALERT
For the third time in two months, St. Charles was vandalized.
Thieves stole the copper downspouts off the chapel and side of
the church. We need to be reminded to pray for those who
commit such a pathetic act. They must be desperate people. They
must not know that God does not like it when you steal from His
Church. If you live in the neighborhood, please be alert and
report any vandalism to theft to the police.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 17, 2016
