Primer Domingo de Cuaresma
St. Mary Parish, Waltham
February 22, 2015
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
I was blessed to be back at the parish last weekend. Even
with the logistical nightmare caused by all the snow, I would
have to say that the Wedding of Cana 2015 was one of the
greatest events at Saint Mary’s. The organizers should be
proud of their work. Fr. Agustin and Jennifer worked hard to
prepare the couples and made it possible for them to get
married in the Church. A committee of parishioners began
preparing months ago. The wedding and Mass was well
organized and reverent. The seven couples were excited and
happy. Over thirty couples renewed their vows in front of
the seven newly married couples. What a sign of hope for
them.
Afterwards we went downstairs for a reception and party.
The food and service were great. The cakes looked awesome
and tasted even better. Each couple was also sent home with
their own wedding cake. The couples ended the evening by
staying at the Holiday Inn Express which basically donated
the rooms for each couple.
We all know that marriage and family life need to be
strengthened. Yet all too often we don’t know what to do
except list the problems and challenges of marriage. Last
Saturday evening was something different. It was the parish
and parishioners doing something concrete to build up
marriage and family life and the church and the greater
society. Thanks to everyone who prayed for this work and
took part in it in any way. May we now accompany these
newly married couples and invite others to join us in
continuing this great work of God and His people.
- Father Michael

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to
wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open
our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Alms are an old fashioned word for money given for
charitable purposes. St. Mary’s St Vincent de Paul Society
thanks you for allowing us to be a channel for your
almsgiving. And through us the poor we serve thank you for
the food, heating and clothing you supply. “Our Poor Boxes
are the bread boxes of the poor.”
Jesus, model of prayer, lead us into silence and prayer.
Jesus, model of compassion, give us merciful hearts. Jesus,
model of meekness and mildness, make us gentle and humble
of heart. Jesus, model of proclaiming God’s kingdom,
transform us so that we can extend your kingdom. Amen.
CATHOLIC APPEAL
Next weekend, the Catholic Appeal will be announced in all
parishes throughout the Archdiocese. In preparation, we
invite you to prayerfully consider making a generous gift.
Please visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.org to make an
online pledge. By supporting the Appeal, you support our
parish. Thank you for your consideration of this year’s
Appeal.

“The love that brings new life into the world”
– Rabbi Sacks on the institution of marriage
continued from last week
But our compassion for those who choose to live differently should not inhibit us from being advocates for
the single most humanising institution in history. The family, man, woman, and child, is not one lifestyle
choice among many. It is the best means we have yet discovered for nurturing future generations and
enabling children to grow in a matrix of stability and love. It is where we learn the delicate choreography of
relationship and how to handle the inevitable conflicts within any human group. It is where we first take the
risk of giving and receiving love. It is where one generation passes on its values to the next, ensuring the
continuity of a civilization. For any society, the family is the crucible of its future, and for the sake of our
children’s future, we must be its defenders.
Since this is a religious gathering, let me, if I may, end with a piece of biblical exegesis. The story of the first
family, the first man and woman in the garden of Eden, is not generally regarded as a success. Whether or
not we believe in original sin, it did not end happily. After many years of studying the text I want to suggest
a different reading.
The story ends with three verses that seem to have no connection with one another. No sequence. No logic.
In Genesis 3: 19 God says to the man: “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to
the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Then in the next verse
we read: “The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all life.” And in the next,
“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.”
What is the connection here? Why did God telling the man that he was mortal lead him to give his wife a
new name? And why did that act seem to change God’s attitude to both of them, so that He performed an act
of tenderness, by making them clothes, almost as if He had partially forgiven them? Let me also add that the
Hebrew word for “skin” is almost indistinguishable from the Hebrew word for “light,” so that Rabbi Meir,
the great sage of the early second century, read the text as saying that God made for them “garments of
light.” What did he mean?
If we read the text carefully, we see that until now the first man had given his wife a purely generic name. He
called her ishah, woman. Recall what he said when he first saw her: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh
of my flesh; she shall be called woman for she was taken from man.” For him she was a type, not a person.
He gave her a noun, not a name. What is more he defines her as a derivative of himself: something taken
from man. She is not yet for him someone other, a person in her own right. She is merely a kind of reflection
of himself.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence – Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to
the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed
on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of
abstinence, meat may not be eaten at all.
Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their
60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On
these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to each one’s needs, but together they should not
equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.
These Lenten regulations state the minimum requirements.
Other recommended practices during this season include
participating in daily Mass and fasting on other days.

TREASURES OF THE CHURCH - FEBRUARY 27
St. Mary Parish presents a teaching and exposition of Sacred
Relics on Friday February 27 at 7:00 p.m. Father Carlos
Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his
very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He
will bring with him over 150 relics, some as old as 2000
years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria
Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St.
Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas
Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will
also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as
one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the
world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and
venerate each relic. In the Church’s history many miracles
and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and
many have been healed through this ministry. Please do not
miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your
articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and
pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be
able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession.
