n Fri., Oct. 3, former State Assemblymember
Gabriela Rosa, who pled guilty to marriage
and bankruptcy fraud in June, was sentenced to
one year in federal prison.

Rosa, the first Dominican-born woman to be elected to the State
Assembly, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Denise
Cote, who ignored Rosa’s requests for leniency.
Rosa must report to federal prison on November 14 and also
serve three years probation.
The 47-year-old Rosa, who became a U.S. citizen in 2005,
was elected Assemblywoman in 2012, representing Inwood,
Washington Heights and Marble Hill. She admitted in June to paying an American man $8,000 to
marry her.
In court papers, Rosa had asked the judge for leniency, stating
that she was “following the American dream” as an immigrant
and made bad decisions while seeking a better life for her son. Rosa was seeking to avoid prison time to care for her son, now
16, and also her mother.
In issuing her ruling, Cote said that trying to justify marriage
fraud “as a path that immigrants take in pursuit of the American
dream is really a disservice to all immigrants who actually try to
follow the law and get citizenship legitimately.”
Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New
York, stated that Rosa only became eligible to run for the New
York State Assembly as a result of her immigration fraud.
“She also defrauded a federal bankruptcy court and her creditors
for her own financial gain,” Bharara said.
Rosa’s citizenship status will be unaffected.

J’s Big Gym closes

T
hey’ll have to sweat it out
somewhere else.
On Mon., Oct. 6th, members were abruptly
notified that J’s Big Gym, the fitness mainstay
at West 181st Street, had closed.
The announcement was first made via
email to members over the weekend.
Early on Mon., Oct. 6th, a sign was posted
outside the gym stating that the business,
which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013,
was closing its doors effective immediately.
“We apologize for the very short notice,”
read the sign. “Circumstances beyond our
control are forcing us to take this action at
this time. We are making every effort to make
reasonable settlements with each and every
one of you.”
The announcement came as a shock to
many.
Member Jordany Antigua was upset about
the lack of notice.
“I just paid my $350 annual fee,” said
Antigua. “How could they take people’s
money like that and not inform them?”
He added that he had walked by the
building the previous night and noticed
that office equipment was being moved
out of the building and put it in a van.
“I didn’t think anything of it at the time,”
he said. “Then, when I tried to visit the gym
today, it was closed.”

the entrance gated shut on Monday.
“I’ve been coming here ten years,” said
García. “I have no idea what’s going on.”
He said that he had worked out at J’s the day
before.
“They didn’t say anything about closing.”
In a March 2013 Manhattan Times article,
owner Jay Hirschhorn explained that everyone
was welcome at J’s.
“A lot of people believe you need to be
a gym rat for it to work, but we encourage
everybody,” he said, urging for a focus on

An e-mail statement sent to The Manhattan
Times on the morning of Tues., Oct. 8th from
Hirschhorn and his partner Claire read as
follows: “Jay believes he understands and
appreciates the frustration and bitterness
many of the members feel. Jay also hopes that
the members believe that no one feels worse
than himself. It will take many weeks before
we can sort this situation out.”
What was clear was that the fitness
institution was gone for good.

Little League Volunteers Needed
The Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Little League is looking for
community residents willing to help out with its 27th season next spring.
Founded in 1988, the league has played all its games on its field at the
northern end of Highbridge Park. The program has since served thousands
of local youngsters between 5-12 years old.
Thirty-five of the Little Leaguers have grown up to become NYPD
officers, and two of them are professional ballplayers in the minor leagues
working their way up to the majors.
The 24 teams need managers, coaches and support staff.

Making the Grade

L

ew York City is as diverse as
it’s ever been, with nearly
40 percent of our residents
born outside the U.S., nearly
50 percent speaking a language
other than English at home, and
over 55 percent of New Yorkers
identifying as people of color.
As the Chief Financial Officer of the City,
it is my job to not only scrutinize our City
budget for waste, fraud, and abuse, but also
to look beyond the four-year financial plan
to envision what our economy will look like
decades down the line. Part of this effort
is in understanding how diversity—from
the factory floor to the boardroom and
everywhere in-between—is an economic
development imperative.
At the City level, a robust minority and
women-owned business enterprise (M/
WBE) program not only makes government
more efficient for taxpayers by increasing
competition in procurement, but also helps
to foster an inclusive economy of shared
prosperity throughout the five boroughs. As
a recent Department of Commerce study
showed, minority-owned businesses are
“engine[s] of employment in emerging and
minority communities,” and their success
is essential to reducing the high rate of
unemployment that continues to plague
many minority communities in the wake of
the Great Recession.
However, you wouldn’t know it by
looking at how our City spends its taxpayer
dollars to purchase goods and
services—everything
from
office supplies and heavy
machinery, to professional
services and food for the
City’s 1.1 million school
children. In Fiscal Year 2014,
only 3.9 percent of the City’s
$17.8 billion procurement
budget went to M/WBEs.
I recently issued a new report—“Making
the Grade”—that gives 32 City agencies,
including my own, a letter grade for M/
WBE procurement. The grades are based
on target goals laid out in the most recent
amendments to the City’s M/WBE program.
Known as Local Law 1, these amendments
include procurement goals for African-

American, Hispanic-American, AsianAmerican, and Women-owned firms across
four industry categories: Construction,
Professional Services, Standard Services,
and Goods.
The results should be troubling to every
New Yorker who cares about the future
of our City and its economy. Only two
agencies secured better than a “C” and
the majority of agencies were
issued “Ds” and “Fs.” That’s
not only an embarrassment;
it’s costing taxpayers
money and hurting our
communities.
Of the over $5.7 billion
in FY 2014 spending
reviewed in my report,
Hispanic American-owned
businesses received just
$37.4 million dollars—a total of 0.7%.
That’s unacceptable and we, as a City must
do something to change this
immediately.
The fundamental goal of
the gradebook is to press
agencies to redouble their
efforts to increase outreach
to M/WBEs and ultimately
get more contracts into the
hands of these crucial job-creators.
But it doesn’t stop there. The report also
provides a series of recommendations to
strengthen the City’s M/WBE program,
including:
• Expanding the scope of contracts that
fall under Local Law 1;
• Improving City agency websites to

A Lutheran legacy

N
ot many organizations
can claim to have been in
existence for 350 years, especially
in so young a nation.
But that is the case for the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of St. Matthew, which
celebrates its 350th anniversary this year.
St. Matthew’s traces its origins to a historic
charter given by the first British Governor of
New York on December 6, 1664, marking it
as the oldest Lutheran church in the United
States.
By Governor Richard Nicoll’s hand and
seal, the charter gave early Dutch Lutheran
settlers the right to “freely and publicly
exercise divine worship according to their
consciences.”
“Prior to that, Lutherans on this soil were
punished for attempting to hold public
services,” explained Peter Deebrah, Pastor of
St. Matthew’s Church, now based on Bennett
Avenue.
The original copy of the charter still
survives, and is now in the possession of the
New York Public Library.
Deebrah called it “a staggering thought”
when he considers how long his church has
been active.
“It’s difficult to even wrap your head around
it,” said Deebrah. “Especially in a nation that
was founded less than 240 years ago.”
Based in lower Manhattan for most of its
early history, St. Matthew’s moved uptown to
Harlem in 1906.
In 1946, the church purchased a building
on Sherman Avenue in Inwood, where it
remained until 2006.
That year, financial constraints forced the
parish to sell the building and move to its
current home at 178 Bennett Avenue, where it
shares space with The Cornerstone Center, a
spiritual and educational facility.
“Ideally, we will have a site of our own
again one day, but it’s an arrangement that
works well,” said Deebrah. “Our hosts are
very generous.”
Deebrah, who has served at St. Matthew’s
since 1998 and was ordained pastor nine years
ago, said his church has embedded itself as an
important part of the community.
While in its Sherman Avenue location, St.
Matthew’s ran a food pantry program that fed
500 families per month.
The church also hosted Alcoholics
Anonymous (AA) meetings for more than 20
years.
“I remember a time when an AA participant
came to me and said that the meetings were
responsible for saving his life,” recalled
Deebrah.
“It was very humbling.”
For the past fifteen years, the congregation
has worked with Columbia University to
provide the Inwood Academic Tutoring
Program, which assists elementary, middle

On the last weekend in September, I had the
honor of taking part in the Ford Millennials
Summit in Miami as a member of the Ford
Millennials team. Ford Millennials is an
important initiative from Ford en Español that
selects young and emerging Latino influencers
from across the country and helps to nurture
their growth and development. In just about 48
hours we took part in Social Media Week
Miami, the Miami Urban Music and
Film Festival, the Viva Miami Expo, a
tech and social media summit at FIU’s School
of Mass Communications as well as the
super awesome Calle 8 Noches Culturales
series. It was two intense days of art, culture,
community, learning and networking. I even got
to see a horse dancing Salsa. Don’t believe me?

back to August 24th, 1986 for a great story
on the documentary We Were So Beloved
about the thriving German Jewish community that
once flourished in Washington Heights. In fact,

Journal ran an excellent story, replete with stirring
photographs, on the powerful protest march.
Scott Lynch of Gothamist came up to
the majestic Fort Tryon Park to revel in the
30th Annual Medieval Festival. The
Medieval Festival has become one of the biggest
events Uptown, drawing nearly 60,000 witches,
warlocks, damsels, knights and lords yearly.

hosts, insanity and repressed
sexuality are just some of the
themes Henry James explored in
his 19th century novella, Turn of
the Screw.
While some critics say the story’s unnamed
governess only imagines ghosts, others
maintain they are real.
Playwright Jamie Wylie says it one of
the great mysteries of the story. Wylie, who
adapted the work into a play for Everyday
Inferno Theatre Company, comes down
squarely in favor of ghosts.
Yet she does not seek to persuade the
audience either way.
“I would be happy if people left in
disagreement,” she said. “I love shows that
are like that—if half the audience thinks
[the governess] is barking mad and if others
think there were ghosts and what an awful
thing.”
The classic gothic ghost story has been
told in many ways—films, plays and even an
opera. This adaptation is staged at the MorrisJumel Mansion—a historic house rumored to
be haunted in its own right.
“I’m intrigued by a world by a world
where the dead aren’t exactly gone,” Wylie
explained. “I think that
is wonderfully hopeful
and frightening at the
same time.”
The play is a story
within a story. In
James’s novella, the
tale of the unfortunate
governess is told at a
party. The audience,
settled in the Mansion’s
expansive
Octagon
Drawing Room, is the
party.
“Everyone is just on
the cusp of the action,”
noted Wylie.
She adapted the
script after long-time
friend Anaïs Koivisto
said she loved the story
and wanted to direct it.
Wylie had read the work in school, but upon
re-reading it discovered themes she missed
the first time around.
“There’s so much wonderful darkness in
the story,” she said. “To really bring out the
guts of what makes this a great piece is to
tackle the dirty issues underneath.”
This adaptation is not a standard version
of the work. As she was working on it, Wylie
considered the possibility that the ghosts
might not be what the governess thinks or that

York City charter schools gathered
at Foley Square on Oct. 2nd to call
on city and state leaders to address
what they call a “failing school
crisis.”
The rally, which was billed as “Don’t
Steal Possible,” was organized by Families
for Excellent Schools (FES) and by elected
officials, including Senate Co-Majority
Leader Jeff Klein and Assemblymembers
Robert Rodríguez and Marcos Crespo.
“We have a duty to make sure our public
education is second to none,” said Senator
Klein. “Charter schools are public schools.
We have to emulate what charter schools do.”
FES and organizers sought to draw
attention to its report issued in July in which
it cites that a “forgotten fourth,” or nearly
143,000 students of the 1.1 million public
school students, were trapped in failing
schools. Moreover, a subsequent report issued
by FES charged that less than 1 in 10 students
met “grade-level benchmarks for reading and
math.”
“That’s not a statistic, that’s a crisis,”

“Enough is enough. We must stop playing
politics with the future of our children.”

and state leaders,” added FES CEO Jeremiah
Kittredge. “Without bold action, this crisis

The late morning rally was inflected
with speeches, coordinated outerwear
and high-energy music, tended to by The
Roots musician and DJ Ahmir “Questlove”
Thompson, who spun a host of classic pop
and R&B music.
Many in attendance bore bold red t-shirts
emblazoned with the rallying cry “Don’t Steal
Possible” and held hand-painted signs that
read “Kids can’t wait” and “Great schools
now.”
The coordinated effort to turn out en masse
included various charter schools closing
their doors and bringing students, teachers
and parents downtown. A strong showing
was seen from Eva Moskowitz’s Success
Academy schools, which has 32 schools
citywide.
Harlem resident Chie Davis brought her son
Hikaru and his friend Noah. Davis said her
son, who attends Harlem Success Academy,
had previously been enrolled at a public
school for kindergarten. “It was horrible. He
wasn’t happy.”
But now, said Davis, he had begun to thrive.
It was an oft-repeated tale by both those
who stood also at the elevated dais.

Richard Grunn’s Circus is both an art show
and a live-action performance at the UPstart
Gallery in Inwood. The art show opened Oct.
6th with approximately 25 monoprints and
two dozen puppets.
The puppets reside in a room resembling a
train car inside the Cooper Street shop.
“When you go into this little room, it’s a
transformation,” Grunn said. “You are going
to someplace else.” The puppets are all willing
to have selfies taken with visitors, he added.
Gallery owner Diane Nino said Grunn’s art
is perfect for the space. “He’s a wild, quirky
genius,” she said. “His art is edgy – and we’re
on the edge of Manhattan.”

Parks Initiative (CPI),
which commits a $130 million
capital investment to improve
35 small neighborhood parks

Created to address the issue of inequity
among city parks, the CPI will include
making improvements to Carmansville
and St. Nicholas Playgrounds in Northern

live in,” said Mayor de Blasio. “The
Community Parks Initiative reaffirms our
administration’s commitment to the creation

City’s marquee parks have prospered, while
hundreds of neighborhood green spaces
languish under a stagnant Parks Department
budget,” added Councilmember Mark

Rent-freeze eligibility expanded for seniors and disabled

A
recent law change is poised
to help stabilize the cost of
living for a greater number of New
York City seniors and those with a
disability.
The Senior Citizen Rent Increase
Exemption (SCRIE) and Disability Rent
Increase Exemption (DRIE) allow eligible
New Yorkers to have their rent frozen at
its current level and exempt from future
increases.
Effective July 1, 2014, the income threshold
for eligibility increased from $29,000 to

62 years old or receive a disability pension,

free clinic at ARC Senior Center in
Washington Heights.
Local seniors were able to speak with
representatives of the Department of Finance
to review the new requirements and get
assistance with paperwork.
“People could find out right away if they
qualify, and sign up for the program while at
the clinic,” said Brewer.

Manhattan,” commented Nobile-Hernández. “The rents are rising, and they’re not building
any new senior residences around here.”
She added, “SCRIE helps them greatly so
they can stay in their homes.”
State Senator Adriano Espaillat visited the
senior center during the clinic.
“This is an important effort because many
seniors don’t know that they’re now eligible
due to the new laws,” he said. “It’s nice to
have an event like this, where seniors can sit
with someone and talk to them face-to-face to
have questions answered.”
He said that a similar clinic would be held
in Inwood during January 2015, and one was
being planned for Hamilton Heights as well.

said. “Employment efforts need collaboration,
and this coalition will allow them to help even
more people.”
The East Harlem Talent Center will focus
on entry and mid-level positions, initially
targeting job sectors that include healthcare,
retail, construction, office administration,
maintenance and hospitality.
“This, to me, is just going to be the seed
of something that we should have been doing
a long time in the Congress and is a part of
the President’s thought,” said Rep. Charles
Rangel.
“And that is to bring talent to the employers
who really don’t know how to find the talent,
and to unite the younger people that don’t
know how to find the jobs.”
Hire East Harlem is a venture of the East
Harlem Community Alliance (EHCA), a
coalition of local businesses, nonprofits and
religious organizations.

Union Settlement Association and Chairman
of the EHCA, said all organizations in the
coalition share the common goal of promoting
local hiring.

works for about a year.
Carol S. Ward, the Mansion’s Executive
Director, said that production fits in well
with their “contemporary meets colonial”
programming.
“We, especially at this time of year, enjoy
people coming to the Mansion and telling
them about the spirits of the past, especially
Eliza Jumel.” Jumel, the longest resident
of the Mansion, is thought by some to still
inhabit the house in spirit form.
Ward also liked that the theatre company
was founded by two young women. “I
love supporting female led projects and
emphasizing the strong female roles at the
Mansion,” she said.
All of story’s traditional elements remain
the same, and Wylie said that the Mansion is a
perfect setting for the play. The staging makes
exceptionally good use of the Octagonal
Drawing Room’s windows.
“The actors are having a wonderful time,
interacting in a space that actually has a
fireplace and windows,” she said. “It’s so
beautifully decorated that it is really easy
for the actors to let go and fully immerse
themselves in character.”

historia”, dijo. “Para realmente tener las agallas

The actual Circus performance takes place

and other mystery ingredients.
Many of the show’s stars—the puppets—
are also made of repurposed objects. “Not
every thing is stuff you would throw out,”
said Grunn. “But you would eventually throw
it out.”
Uptown audiences will recognize Grunn
from Up Theater Company’s performances
earlier this year. This show was inspired by
Alexander Calder’s Circus—an imaginative
circus diorama with tiny moving figures
made of wire and cloth and other objects
like rhinestones and bottle caps—which took
Paris by storm in the late 1920’s.
Grunn’s show is whimsical and
improvisational. In some of the earlier circus
performances, his six-year-old son made an
impromptu acting debut because he couldn’t
find a babysitter.
Sheridan, now 15, plays Vincenzo, an
apathetic busboy. Grunn’s other son, Dylan,
24, plays Luigi, a Casanova character with a
squeaky, voice who sings and plays guitar.
Grunn is Urbano, the master of ceremonies
who conducts the show in an Italian patter.
Grunn also teaches literacy and theater
in New York City schools and works at the
Lighthouse Guild in a radio theater class with
visually impaired children. Working with his
own children has not only changed the show,
but also the way he approaches his work.
“I don’t take it so seriously,” he said. “It is
comedy.”
It has also opened him to include music
and other bits in the performance. “I never

St. Matthew’s has planned a host of
special activities to honor its 350th birthday.
To mark the occasion, the church has
developed a commemorative medallion, to
be issued in gold, silver and bronze, while
a concert featuring several local choirs is
scheduled for November 2.
A display of historical artifacts from St.
Matthew’s — including a communion set
from the 1800’s and the church’s official
staff, created in the early 1700’s — will
be displayed at Concordia College in
Bronxville from October 17 until November
7, and at the church itself on December 6
and 7.
Deebrah said that the collection of
artifacts might appeal to local history buffs,
regardless of their religious affiliation.
“It’s not just the story of a church, it
reflects the history of our city and our
nation,” he remarked.
St. Matthew’s now serves a modest but
active congregation of about 30 people.
“The story of St. Matthew’s is really
one of determination and survival,” stated
Deebrah, who has guided the church through
the loss of its own building and struggles
with operating funds.
“The congregation has endured hardships,
but we’ve managed to persevere,” said
Deebrah.
The pastor stated that he hopes that
optimism will remain the enduring legacy of
St. Matthew’s.

“Lo ideal sería que tuviéramos un sitio nuestro

dijo Deebrah. “Nuestros anfitriones son muy
generosos”.
Deebrah, quien ha servido en St. Matthew desde
1998 y fue ordenado pastor hace nueve años, dijo
que su iglesia se ha arraigado como una parte
importante de la comunidad.
En su ubicación de la avenida Sherman, St.
Matthew manejaba un programa de distribución
de alimentos que alimentaba a 500 familias al
mes.
La iglesia también fue sede de reuniones de
Alcohólicos Anónimos (AA) durante más de 20
años.
“Recuerdo un momento en que un participante
de AA se me acercó y dijo que las reuniones le
salvaron la vida”, recordó Deebrah.
“Fue una lección de humildad”.
Durante los últimos quince años, la
congregación ha trabajado con la Universidad
Columbia para ofrecer el Programa de Tutoría
Académica Inwood, que ayuda a estudiantes de
primaria, secundaria y preparatoria que tienen
problemas con diferentes materias escolares.
St. Matthew ha planificado una serie
de actividades especiales en honor de
su cumpleaños 350. Para celebrar la ocasión, la iglesia ha
desarrollado un medallón conmemorativo que
se emitirá en oro, plata y bronce, mientras
que un concierto de varios coros locales está
programado para el 2 de noviembre.
Una exhibición de objetos históricos de
St. Matthew, que incluyendo un conjunto de
comunión de la década de 1800 y el báculo oficial
de la iglesia -creado en la década de 1700-,

estará en exhibición en Concordia College,
en Bronxville, del 17 de octubre hasta el 7 de
noviembre, y en la iglesia misma el 6 y 7 de
diciembre.
Deebrah dijo que la colección de artefactos
podría atraer a aficionados locales de la
historia, independientemente de su afiliación
religiosa.
“No es sólo la historia de una iglesia, refleja
la historia de nuestra ciudad y de nuestra
nación”, comentó.
St. Matthew actualmente sirve a una
congregación modesta, pero activa, de
alrededor de 30 personas.
“La historia de St. Matthew es realmente una
de determinación y supervivencia”, declaró
Deebrah, quien guió a la iglesia durante la
pérdida de su propio edificio y las luchas con los
fondos operativos.
“La congregación ha soportado dificultades,
pero hemos logrado perseverar”, dijo Deebrah.
El pastor dijo que espera que el optimismo se
mantenga como parte del legado perdurable de
St. Matthew.
“No importa en dónde las personas se
encuentren en la vida”, dijo, “les damos
esperanza”.

¿Como parar con las burlas?
Estimada Trabajadora Social:
El año pasado, algunas niñas
en mi clase se burlaban de mi
por todo. Al principio pensé
que era una broma, pero
luego me hizo odiar ir a la
escuela. Solo quería que me
dejaran sola. Traté de decirle
que me dejaran quieta, pero
entonces se burlaban aun
más. Pensé que este año seria
diferente, pero el primer día de
clases, las mismas niñas ya se
estaban riendo a mis espaldas.
Literalmente me hace sentir
enferma. No quiero pasar otro
año así.

Parece ser que estas niñas
te han estado intimidando
– mostrando su lado feo.
Las buenas noticias son,
compartiendo el problema
conmigo, te contestas parte de
tu propia pregunta.
Con suerte, ya te haz dado
cuenta que estas niñas son el
problema, no tu. El que ellas
sean malas con un compañero
de clases es incorrecto. Tú
suenas como una inteligente,
dulce, amorosa joven mujer;
si estas niñas no tienen nada
bueno que decir, entonces no
deberían decir nada.
Podrías intentar otra vez
decirles que tu no aprecias la
intimidación. Dilo justo así – y
deja que el peso de la verdad
caiga en ellas por un momento.

hasta el punto donde sientas
que no eres lo suficientemente
bueno. Si comienzas a sentirte
deprimida, por favor déjale
