of crimson
The Festival is an

T
here would be no dimming
her light.
Despite the overcast skies, the Little
Red Lighthouse, Manhattan’s only
remaining lighthouse, was the singular
focus of attention during its 22nd annual
celebration at Fort Washington Park this
past Sat., Oct. 11th.
Organized by civic groups Riverside
Park, Riverside Park Conservancy, Urban
Park Rangers, and the Historic House
Trust, the festival included lighthouse
tours, a reading of the classic children’s
book by Hildegarde H. Swift, fishing
clinics, live musical entertainment, and
fitness workshops.
Iconic as it might be now to the
Hudson River landscape, the lighthouse
wasn’t always there.
“The lighthouse was brought here
in 1921. It was a part of a system of
lighthouses in Sandy Hook, New Jersey,”
explained Urban Park Ranger Sunny
Corrao.
According to Corrao, the lighthouse
was functional until the completion of
the George Washington Bridge. Then, the
lighthouse became obsolete, as the bridge’s
lights projected enough illumination for
the safe passage of ships.
But Swift’s book, The Little Red Lighthouse
and The Great Gray Bridge, in 1942 proved
too popular. Children across the city and
beyond mobilized to preserve the iconic
landmark, sending letters and pennies to
“save the lighthouse.”
“The U.S. Coast Guard gave it to the city,”
said Corrao. “Now it’s the Parks Department.”
“We have this very special landmark in the
park, and we like to celebrate it every year,”

“We got to go to the top,” reported 8-yearold Charles Hua. He had been successful
in convincing his father to bring him to the
festival. “It was good!”
Jessica Ann Carp first visited the lighthouse
two years ago, and fell in love. So thorough
was her fascination that she has written a
musical about the lighthouse. She performed
a few songs on Saturday.
“I sat down by the piano and started to play
around,” she said.
Being so close to the iconic character
seemed a bit unreal to some.
It took 10-year-old Calvin Strothenke three
attempts to venture up the ladder inside the
lighthouse.
“Typically, I am afraid of heights,” he
explained. “We always see it from the
highway and in the book.”

Mark Kator, President and
Chief Executive Officer of
Isabella, said the “Raise the
Roof” gala is the center’s most
important annual event.
“Not only is it essential to our fundraising,
but it’s an opportunity to celebrate what our
organization and staff do,” explained Kator.
“We also get to recognize certain people
who are doing good work in healthcare.”
This year’s gala will give recognition to
three honorees — David A. Gould, senior
advisor to United Hospital Fund, for his
service to healthcare in New York; Optum,
Inc., for creating a managed care program for
nursing home residents; and Mark Lipton, for
his contributions and leadership
as the outgoing chairperson of
Isabella’s Board of Trustees.
Founded in 1875, Isabella
provides services out of a
main campus on Audubon
Avenue and two additional
locations, both on Broadway
— one near 169th Street
and another at 216th Street.
The Audubon site features a
705-bed nursing home, adult
day health care, rehab services
and a children’s daycare.
Isabella is also active in supporting the

l Centro Geriátrico Isabella subirá a la
azotea para celebrar su gala anual.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of
cancer-related death among women in New
York State. In 2011, the most recent year for
which data is available, more than 15,000
women were newly-diagnosed with breast
cancer in New York, with more than 2,600
women dying from the disease.
In addition to the national recognition, Governor
Cuomo proclaimed October as Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in New York State.
New York State Health Commissioner Dr.
Howard Zucker said, “We’ve achieved incredible
advances in the fight against breast cancer,
yet estimates show that one in eight women
will still face this challenge in their lifetime. It is
imperative that women understand that early
detection is crucial to successful treatment.
I urge all New York women to get screened
regularly to help prevent this tragic disease from
taking more lives.”
The causes of breast cancer are still unknown,
but several factors may increase a woman’s risk
for breast cancer,
including:
•Advanced age
•Being younger
than 12 years
of age at the first
menstrual period
•Starting menopause at an
older age
•Never giving birth or having
delayed giving birth to a first child
until age 30 or older
•Not breastfeeding
•Having a personal or family history (on the
mother’s or father’s side) of breast cancer, or
carrying certain gene mutations such as BRCA
1 or BRCA 2
•Being overweight or obese
•Being sedentary
•Having a history of radiation exposure to the
chest
•Taking hormone replacement therapy for an
extended period of time.

illian Roberts, directora ejecutiva
del Consejo Distrital 37 (DC 37 por
sus siglas en inglés) de la Federación

Municipales y del Condado, ha
anunciado su retiro al 31 de diciembre
2014.
Roberts, quien se desempeñó como cabeza
del DC 37 durante los últimos 13 años, está
terminando una carrera de 55
años en el movimiento obrero,
que le valió el sobrenombre de
“Dama de Acero”.

cine a los niños

L
ights…camera…kids.
For the sixth straight year,
KidCinemaFest, a film festival geared
specifically to children and their families, is
back in New York City.
Designed
to
heighten
children’s
appreciation for filmmaking and cultural
diversity, this year’s festival includes more
than 40 films from over 20 different countries.
KidCinemaFest 2014 will be held from
October 22 through October 31 at venues
such as The United Palace of Cultural Arts,
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, Casita
Maria in the South Bronx and uptown public
schools.
The event is free of charge and open to all
ages.
The films chosen this year are made for
children, and reflect the strong cultural and
social identities of the cities where they
were created, explained Armando Guareño,
Founder and Director of
KidCinemaFest.
“This year’s festival
differs from previous
years in that we have the
opportunity to show a
film from every continent
in the world,” remarked
Guareño. “We will also be
more interactive with the
kids this year, as we want
to know their thoughts on
the films and the festival in
general.”
KidCinemaFest
presents feature films,
documentaries, animation
and short films that are
suitable for children,
adolescents, young adults
and their families.
The festival is sponsored by Cine Art
Entertainment Productions, in collaboration
with Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez,
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, and
Catholic Charities.
This marks the first year that KidCinemaFest
has screened films in the Bronx.
Guareño remarked, “Families can learn
about different cultures without having to
leave New York City.”
The festival kicks off on October 22 at
United Palace with a screening of Ernest
and Celestine, an Academy Award nominee
for Best Animated Feature, that tells the
story of an unlikely friendship between a
bear and a young mouse.
The festival closes on October 31 at
Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center
with the Dominican film Los Super. This
superhero movie depicts a former Olympic
champion who joins forces with a street
hustler and a radio technician, with the
intention of becoming inventors after a
crime wave hits their neighborhood.
Other
screening
highlights include: Caídos
del mapa (Off the Map),
an Argentinean comedy;
Welcome to the Space Show,
a Japanese animation film
by Koji Masumari; La
Montaña (The Mountain),
a Dominican documentary;
and the Venezuelan family
film El Manzano Azul (The
Blue Apple Tree).
Several other shorter
length films will be shown
as compilations, including
Kid Flix Mix, a collection
of short films suited for
children as young as four.
“I strongly believe that
the festival has been helping [local youths]
to see the world from a different perspective
and learning more about other children’s
lifestyle from around the world,” said
Guareño.
The 6th Annual KidCinemaFest Film
Festival takes place from October 22 to
31, 2014 at various locations in Northern
Manhattan and the Bronx.

Pruden goes presidential

A
n Inwood resident has been
tapped by President Barack
Obama for a key advisory role.
Harlan Pruden, a First Nations Cree
activist and former member of Community
Board 12, has been appointed to the
Presidential Advisory Council on
HIV/AIDS (PACHA).
In his role at PACHA, Pruden will
help provide recommendations to
the Secretary of the Department
of Health and Human Services
regarding HIV/AIDS prevention,
research and care, and also
assist with implementing
the National HIV/AIDS
Strategy.
Pruden was sworn
into his position on the 25-member
Council on September 4, in Washington, D.C.
“My activism and experience looking at
policy have prepared me for this,” Pruden
commented to The Manhattan Times.
“It’s nice to think that I can help impact
change and play a role in influencing policy.”
Pruden said that PACHA is planning to
focus on a variety of current issues, such as
return-to-work programs for those living
with HIV/AIDS, and an examination of the
Southern region of the United States.
“The South has the least amount of
healthcare resources,” said Pruden, “and
people there with HIV and AIDS don’t have
enough access to care.”
Pruden suggested that reducing the stigma
associated with HIV and AIDS would be a
key factor in curbing the infection rate.
“Many people who are infected don’t even
know that they are — we need to remove the
stigma so more people will get tested and
can receive treatment,” said

affordable healthcare,”

Two-Spirit Society, an
organization that supports

the half-century anniversary of the Hispanic
Heritage Day Parade, which celebrates over
2.4 million residents of Hispanic heritage
in New York. Over 20 countries from Latin
America were represented along the route.

hen Lourdes Carrasco was 11,
she went back to the Dominican
Republic one summer and got a “cédula,”
or an identity card. It said “blanca,” or
white.
“It describes the color of your skin,” she
explained. “[The assignation] is very random.
My mother is lighter than I am, but she has
‘indio’ on her card.”
In 2011, the Dominican government did
away with the term “indio” (raising an entirely
different set of questions). But for Carrasco,
the incident with her cédula underscored
how much race is so deeply embedded in
Dominican culture.
Carrasco and another Washington Heights
writer, Ian Jackson, are working on a new
film that explicates ideas of race, culture and
politics. In Mari en Maraña, a Dominican
college freshman falls in love with a young
Haitian man.
Their story is not a basic re-hashing of
Romeo and Juliet, said Jackson. “We are using
this as a lens to view what’s happening in the
culture,” he said. “It’s about race, identity,
history, politics and sexuality—and how it
affects the immigrant experience here.”
The two filmmakers have an Indiegogo
campaign underway to support their efforts.
They want to create a short film they can take
to festivals. They also have hopes to make a

feature-length film and perhaps a play.
“We want to spark some conversations
between Haitians and Dominicans and
relationships to the broader culture,” said
Jackson.
Both filmmakers are 32. Carrasco moved
to Northern Manhattan from the Dominican
Republic with her family when she was five.
Jackson has lived in the area since 2006. They
met on the subway, struck up a conversation
and realized they had a lot of overlapping
interests.
Unlike Romeo and Juliet, in Mari en
Maraña, the focus is on the female characters.
Mari and her cousin come home from their
first semester in college and experience an
awakening.
“It’s a new way of looking at the world for
these two young ladies,” he said.
It echoes Jackson’s own shifts in
perspective.
He is originally from Los Angeles but went
to college at New York University. “When I
first started coming home (back) to L.A., it
was a shock—I was looking at every thing
differently,” he said. “That’s something we
really wanted to tap into.”
The film explores the family’s varied
reactions to Mari’s involvement with a young
Haitian man. “Within Dominican culture—in
her family—her having an interest in a black

Estrella said she now felt “better prepared
and more alert to signs of asthma attacks.”
For other graduates, it was diabetes that
needed to be contended with.
Eustacia Gerónimo has battled diabetes for
years, and enrolled in the program in order to
improve her health.
The 75-year-old was glad to report that she
had succeeded in exerting more control over
the disease, and had also cut down on costs
related to her healthcare.
“I don’t get dizzy anymore,” she said. “I feel
strong, and energized.”
And there is more work ahead.
After receiving her certificate and posing for
photos, Estrella noted that she would continue
to do her part. She plans on attending future
WIN classes as a volunteer.
“I want to help other children as well,” she
said. “I highly recommend this. I am extremely
grateful for it.”

salud en el hospital New York-Presbyterian

llevarlos a las salas de emergencia y perder días
de clases.
Los trabajadores de salud comunitaria
bilingües, como Guillermo, son los principales
puntos de contacto para individuos y cuidadores
que necesitan información y apoyo completos.
WIN, ofrece clases informativas y programas
mensuales, también sirve como una bendición
para los profesionales de la salud.
“El programa es un activo maravilloso”, dijo
la pediatra de NYP Laura Robbins-Milne. “Los
trabajadores de salud comunitaria pueden
ir a los hogares, identificar posibles factores
desencadenantes y trabajar con las familias para
encontrar formas que les funcionen para superar
las barreras para controlar el asma de sus hijos”.

officials, representatives of the Port Authority,
and the developers George Washington Bridge
Development Venture L.L.C. on the ongoing
reconstruction and development of the George
Washington Bridge Bus Terminal.

buses.
On Tuesday, there were concerns expressed
also about increased congestion in an area
already packed with vehicular traffic.

he is excited for the opening of Isabella’s
state-of-the art rehabilitation center, which
is scheduled to debut this November on the
Audubon campus.
“It’s an amazing facility,” said Kator.
“We’re very proud of it.”
Isabella’s “Raise the Roof” Gala 2014 will
be held on Thursday, October 16 at Tribeca
Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses Street in Manhattan.

ctober is Breast Cancer
awareness Month, which
seeks to increase awareness of the
disease and to raise funds for its
prevention and treatment.
I am a survivor, and am glad for these
efforts.
One of the best ways to lower your risk
of getting breast cancer is regular exercise.
Exercise serves to:
• Lower your body’s estrogen production
• Strengthen your immune system
• Regulate blood sugar and insulin
• Lower body fat
• Relieve depression
• Relieve stress
Regular exercise can also help improve
your prognosis after you’re been diagnosed.
One obstacle for women seeking to exercise
regularly is discomfort for their breasts,
shoulders and chest area. They might try to
exercise in their every day bra, or no bra, or
any old thing.
But any type of exercise—from yoga to
dancing to jogging—is better with a good
bra. Whatever your size, the wrong bra can
rub and chafe and create discomfort – and a
disincentive to work out.
Get creative.
Look to get properly fitted by a person with
experience. Anina Young, owner of Brazen
Lingerie, has been helping women find just
the right bra since 2008. She recently fitted me
perfectly, in a bra size that surprised me and
bore very little resemblance to the size I had
been wearing. Even my posture improved.

as to what’s best for you—from exercise to
seduction to breast feeding. She has it all at

of the trend in films in which people of color
are typically only seen as the girlfriend or the
buddy of the protagonist.

monsters?
One of cinema’s best ghouls graces the
United Palace’s 50-foot screen on Oct. 31st.
Frankenstein, the 1931 classic black and
white film, starring Boris
Karloff as the Monster and
Colin (“It’s alive!”) Clive
as Dr. Henry Frankenstein,
also gets a special holiday
treat. The 70-minute film
will be shown with Spanish
subtitles and have a world
premiere of a new score,
written and performed live
by guitarist Gary Lucas.

performance last October,
when he accompanied the
Spanish language version of
Dracula.
Lucas had fun at the Palace last year.
“There is something about the sumptuous

accentuates the thrills and chills with
an arsenal of effects and riffs.”
Lucas’ favorite scene in Frankenstein
is the creation of the Monster. “I really
pull all the electrical stops out at that
juncture,” he said.
Lucas has kept busy since his last
appearance in Washington Heights. He
released a new album, Other World,
with Peter Hammill (of Van Der Graff
Generator) and just a few weeks ago
performed a score for The Goddess, a
silent 1934 Chinese film, at Symphony
Space. When he wasn’t touring in
Berlin and Brazil, he also performed
with his own band, Gods and Monsters,
in Manhattan.
The day after he performs Frankenstein,
Lucas heads to Maryland for the premiere of
his live score for Carl Dreyer’s 1932 horror
flick, Vampyr.
“We had an enthusiastic reaction last year.
People love the movie and the music,” said
Fitelson, who said he’d like to see this kind of
event become a UPCA Halloween tradition.
“It would be a great way to give families
another way to celebrate the day.”

Last year’s Dracula
was one of the first films
shown at the United Palace
in decades. The grand theater is undergoing
a transformation. Its damaged movie screen
from the 1950’s was recently replaced with a
brand new 50-foot screen. Its sound system
has also been revitalized. While a few of the
plush red velvet seats may have seen better
days, the 3,400-seat theater has arguably
never been more lustrous and beautiful.
Lucas wrote the score for Frankenstein
similar to the one for Dracula—by composing
themes for specific characters and scenes.
“For the Monster, I tried to inhabit his
leaden boots, if you will, with a very bassheavy octave sound on the electric guitar.
Other passages are swirling and lyrical on the
acoustic guitar, and I even quote Wagner at
one point,” he said.

“Hispanics are making up a higher
and higher percentage of New York City
and State,” said Victor Lazarte, who
moved to the States at the age of 5 from
Bolivia. He has attended the parade for
several years and considers it an important
tradition, especially for his younger
siblings. They were born here, he said,
so it is an opportunity to reconnect with
the traditions of home. “Back in Bolivia,
you could see someone get your meat for
you,” Lazarte noted. “Here you can go to
the supermarket, but you’re not really sure

a Fine Fare supermarket and a host of local
businesses, including Nail Lounge, VS Berry
and Café Buunni, have also signed on to operate
at the terminal.
Small business owners were invited to
register for a workshop to be held on October
21st to learn about getting certified with the Port
Authority as a MWBE (Minority and Women
Business Enterprise).
“We expect to have the bus station [open]
by mid-May, and the stores by mid-June,” said
developer Steven McBride.
Elected officials have been pressing for a
greater footprint to be allotted to community
groups.

It was announced on Tuesday that 1,600

non-profit organization, which has not yet been
selected. That is up from the 300 square feet
promised in May, a space allotment which then
sparked criticism.
Though Councilmember Rodríguez believed
the number of square feet should be greater, he
said the increase signaled a promising sign of
engagement.
“I want to congratulate the Port Authority,” he
remarked, adding that it would be ideal for arts to

Un cafecito con ACDP
Director Yerany Marasco has been hosting cafecitos at ACDP’s Audubon Youth
Program. Her cafecitos are open to all parents and caretakers of children
between the ages of 5 to 18. Yerany wanted to learn about the needs of
local families in an informal, open setting.
The discussions help ACDP’s staff prioritize what kinds of resources are
needed for parents.
“We want to be able to empower parents and provide them with knowledge
to advocate for themselves and their children,” said Marasco, whose own
experience as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic helps her relate to
her clients’ needs.
It is also a networking opportunity for the parents in the community.
So far, the group has hosted workshops on housing, higher education, and
parents’ rights – and there are more to come.
“We wanted to be more creative and get involved in a different way.”
