MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Nativity of Our Lord
School is to continue the ministry of
Jesus within the tradition of our Catholic
heritage in order to educate the whole
person, spiritually, intellectually,
physically, socially, and emotionally.
SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
BE MODEST
FEBRUARY 2-6, 2015
This week on morning announcements, two eighth
graders daily have been sharing the following Pope
Francis quote, “Dear Young People, do not be afraid of
making decisive choices in life. Have faith; the Lord
will not abandon you!” As we continue to spend time
with our students reflecting on the Nativity Attitude to
Be Generous, the words of Pope Francis offer to all of our Nativity
students the importance of making choices that will better the lives of
themselves and others.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Our celebration of Catholic Schools Week was
wonderful. The theme was Catholic Schools:
Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Our
CSW committee of teachers finished the wall-sized
“elements chart” showing what makes Nativity School
the best school. The students wrote notes of thanks to their parents for
sending them to Nativity. Gifts were given out in car line to our parents.
The Open House days on Wednesday and Thursday were quite
successful as many prospective parents toured the building and were able
to drop into the various classes. CSW will end with a Teacher
Appreciation Luncheon for our wonderful and fabulous teachers. We
have 9 teachers/administrators who are celebrating anniversaries with the
Archdiocese of Denver this year. Angelica Reyes and Terry Rowan have
taught for 5 years in the archdiocese, Jen Wagner, Paul TeBockhorst, and
Marla Hart are celebrating 10 years. Lorraine Green and Tammi
Albrecht have been here for 15 years, and Paige Barr has been at Nativity
School for 20 years. Johanna O’Connell celebrates 40 years in the
Archdiocese of Denver. That equals 130 years of experience from these
fine Nativity teachers. Check out the Denver Catholic newspaper to read
all about the teachers throughout the Archdiocese of Denver who have
given years to the education of our many fine students.
SPELLING BEE WINNER
“When you give alms, for example, do
not blow a horn before you go in
synagogues and streets like hypocrites
looking for applause.” Matthew 6:2
Congratulations to Nina Subramanian who won the
Archdiocesan Intermediate Spelling Bee at Notre Dame on
Saturday January 24th, 2015. There were 120 students from
the 4th and 5th grades. Nativity representatives were Ryan
Harvey, Trent Shaver, Sarah Stonehocker, Kathryne Johnson, Sarah
Swonger, Jackson Ward, Mary Vu, and Nina Subramanian. We will be
hosting the Intermediate Spelling Bee at Nativity next year.

WE’VE GOT TALENT, YES, WE DO!
Our kindergarten through second grade students certainly showed their many talents to a lively and
enthusiastic audience of students, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends on
Monday, January 26th. Everyone enjoyed gymnastics, dancing, piano playing, singing, basketball
tricks, and joke telling. Juliana Hansen, Carissa Sembrat, Cora Urruty, Laque Premo, Natalia
Kingsley, Claire Hulquest, Sophia Hulquest, Will Fava, Mary Mook, Claire Bounds, Lydia Barr,
Anna Beaton, Madison Farner, Harrison McMenus, Jace Pitre, Jagger Herrington, Olivia Bode,
Sophie Bertagnolli, Jessica Eldridge, Andrea Prado, Blake Riccio, Joshua Antony, Mia Schellinger, Gillian Talkington,
Raeya Engstrom, Cooper Farner, Dustin Bennett, Gavin Harkness, Tyler Ortega, Kylee Albrecht, and Madison Nguyen all
did a magnificent job. What great school spirit they showed as they performed. We also thank Mrs. Maura Johnson and
Mrs. Carrie Pittenger, our two faithful volunteers who untiringly help with each and every talent show for our students.
Their positive and upbeat attitudes make for a great show.
JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS
Our Junior Great Books program for students in grades 2-5 will begin in February. If you are
interested in leading an enthusiastic group of young readers for thirty minutes for 10-12 weeks,
please send a FastDirect message to Mrs. O’Connell ASAP. Make sure to indicate your choice of
grade level and/or homeroom. We still need leaders for both 2nd grade classes and may need a
second leader for some of the other classes. Training sessions for leaders will be scheduled for next week, and volunteers
will be notified by Mrs. O’Connell.
UNIFORMS FOR 2015 – 2016
Next school year all of our K-8 students will wear uniforms. This is a change for our kindergarten students
who, up to this time, have not worn uniforms. Another change in our uniform for the 2015 -2016 school
year will be the addition of navy blue or red cardigan sweaters as an option for our students. These
sweaters can be purchased only through Dennis Uniforms and will have the Nativity logo on them.
FASTDIRECT TIP OF THE WEEK – JANUARY 29, 2015
As we all know, winters in Colorado can be a challenge. Some days may be balmy and pleasant, and the very next day
may bring snow and bitter cold. Students should always dress for the weather. If the decision is made to close school for a
snow day, FastDirect will be your first complete source of information from Mrs. Shadel. As soon as she makes the
decision to close school, she will post a message to all parents and staff on FastDirect. School closure information will
also be found on Channels 4, 7, and 9, or KOA radio 850 AM. Please do not call the school office.
SEVENTH GRADE OPEN SPEECH MEET
On Saturday, January 24TH, twenty seventh grade students participated in the 7th grade open speech meet at
St. Thomas More Catholic School. Congratulations to Naomi Agustin Martinez, Cavin Alderfer, Marrissa
Avila, Gwynne Duchene, Cara Fabian, Megan Harvey, Saran Malik, Sally Napierkowski, Aaliyah Perez,
Joe Sarno, Olivia Angel, Michael Barella, Jack Bertagnolli, Maham Malik, Evi Martinez-Canedo, Flannery
McGuiness, Heidi Rose, Lilianna Urbina, Jacob Van Handel, and Mackenzie Wasserburger. The speech
team was awarded 11 blue ribbons, 8 red ribbons and 1 white ribbon. These students are now preparing for
the 7th grade trophy speech meet on April 11th at All Souls Catholic School.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR ALTAR SERVER COORDINATORS
We are making a few changes to the Altar Server Program. Primarily, we are establishing three levels of
altar servers: novice, full, and senior. Monthly altar server meetings will be held. The two altar server
meetings next month will be on Wednesday, Feb. 11th at 3:10 pm, and Saturday, Feb. 21st at 8:30 am
(only one of the two is required). These meetings will be mandatory for both new and old because we will
be working on getting all the servers consistent and on the same track. There are a few things that the new
servers have been taught that the older servers need to learn as well. (This is a parish ministry, but we ask
5th – 8th grade altar servers from neighboring parishes, who wish to serve at school Masses, including
funerals, to attend one of these trainings. Please let Mrs. O’Connell know if you will be attending.) If you have any
questions, please contact Thomas Bridges or Joe Denfeld. They can be reached at [email protected].
FROM THE LEARNING SPECIALIST, MRS. HULQUEST: PASSING THE TEST
A test can show your child—and the teacher—how much he/she has learned. But if they get confused by the way a
question is phrased or leaves an important point out of an essay, their grade might not reflect what they know. Share these
techniques for tackling different types of questions with confidence.
True or false: 1. Read the whole statement. If any part is incorrect, the answer is “false.” The entire statement must be
accurate for the answer to be “true.” 2. Take a guess. If there’s no penalty for wrong answers, select the answer that makes
the most sense, even if you’re not sure. You have a 50 percent chance of getting it right.
Multiple choice: 1. Predict the answer. Before you read the choices, have an answer in mind. You’re less likely to get
tripped up by answers that aren’t quite right. 2. Consider “all of the above.” If you’re sure more than one of the responses
is correct, then all of them may be right.
Essay: 1. Identify key words. Pay attention to whether the question calls for you to “compare,” “analyze,” “summarize,”
or “explain.” Base your answer on what you are being asked to do. 2. Make an outline. Having a quick plan will help you
focus on the main ideas and not forget a point you want to make in your answer.
PTO IN THE KNOW
First, a big thank you to the hospitality committee for helping with the Nativity Open House this week!
Our Helping Hands Committee often sends a “sign-up genius,” for families in need of meals. Please contact Denise
Schellinger if you or someone in the school is in need of a little help.
Teacher Appreciation Week (TAW) is becoming its own PTO committee and will take place the week of April 20th this
year. It requires volunteers for set-up/clean-up for five (5) meals, one each day, meal donations, and stuffing teachers’
mailboxes with trinkets. We are looking for chair/co-chair volunteers so please feel free to contact Jamie Merrion or
Michael Ventimiglia through FastDirect if you can help.
Wilma Fuller and Lois Sheahen are organizing this year’s Kids’ Appreciation Day (KAD). The theme is the “Wild West.”
They are looking for several volunteer groups, each of which will organize a single event during KAD. Please let Wilma
or Lois know of your interest as soon as possible. This event takes place in May.
Our Next PTO meeting is February 20th, following Mass.
