Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish develops, grows and sustains the Roman Catholic
faith by enriching and nourishing the Body of Christ. We strive to fulfill our baptismal call
by being the Hands of Christ in sharing our individual time, talents and treasures
to grow as sacramental people.
Gospel Summary Mark 1: 21-28
Much of Jesus’ teaching took place in a synagogue and specifically in today’s reading, the synagogue at Capernaum
was filled with Jewish people from Galilee. Jesus’ listeners were surprised by his knowledge and authority. He especially surprised them when he cast out an evil spirit from one of the men. The evil spirit recognized who Jesus was
and called him “the Holy One of God.” The people didn’t understand this meaning. Only the evil spirit recognized
Jesus. The people, however, were impressed by Jesus’ deeds and brought others to him for healing.
Reflection for Families
It is an awesome responsibility to have authority over another person. Our very use of that authority has the potential
of lifting people up or tearing them down. The greatest responsibility we have rests in the authority we have over our
children. The words we choose, the tone of voice we use to speak to them and the actions our children see us take,
relate to them the authority Jesus has over us. It’s often a sobering experience to think back over the day and recall
what kind of witness we’ve been for Jesus. Our hope is that we can try again tomorrow.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reenergize, Reconnect, Rebirth
Valentines Day is in a few weeks. As we all know the heart is associated with
the day. The heart! Pope Francis recently said: “Dear brothers and sisters, how greatly I
desire that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our
communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!"
For individuals, Francis calls on people to practice a "formation of the
heart" that is to be merciful and open to the needs of others. The Pope states: "A merciful heart does not mean a weak heart - anyone who wishes to be merciful must have a
strong and steadfast heart, closed to the tempter but open to God. A heart that lets itself
be pierced by the Spirit so as to bring love along the roads that lead to our brothers and sisters." He continues,
"And, ultimately, a poor heart, one that realizes its own poverty and gives itself freely for others." Francis ends his
message: "Let us all ask the Lord - Make our hearts like yours! In this way we will receive a heart that is firm and
merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference."
Well said, Holy Father! And to all Happy Valentines Day!
The feast of St. Blaise is Tuesday, February 3rd.
Throats will be blessed at the 8am Mass.

A group of our parishioners helped serve a meal at St.
Francis Inn in Kensington this past weekend. They are a
Franciscan, Eucharistic community called to minister with
the poor and homeless of Philadelphia. Formed in the spirit of the Gospel and inspired by the life and compassion of
Francis and Clare of Assisi, they try to meet the immediate
daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing
and hospitality.
In 2014, St. Francis Inn served a total of 159,477 hot, nutritious meals to men, women and children in their dining
room. They served 7,778 more meals in 2014. This is the
biggest increase of meals served in one year.

049 Nativity BVM
Our Nativity BVM Legion of Mary visits the sick and imprisoned. During these visits, they are often asked
for holy cards with images and prayers and are asking for help gathering them. There is a basket in the vestibule where you can donate prayer cards. Thank you!
The next gathering of the Nativity Book Club is Wednesday, February 11th at 7pm in the Conference Room. Our latest selection is entitled “Graffiti on my Soul”, a beautiful memoir. Books are available at the Rectory Office for $10.
Our Parish Calendar is available on our website nativity-bvm.org. The calendar is updated weekly.
Nativity 55+ will meet February 10th at 12:30pm in the Brick Building. Bring your lunch and a
$5 wrapped gift for crazy bingo. In case of inclement weather, members will be notified of any
cancellation.
The Knights of Columbus will be selling crab cakes during Lent, in the Brick building,
after all Masses, starting the weekend of February 14th-15th.
For orders of 6 or more and for soup or crab critters, call Sal at 610-627-1037.
Prayer &Faith Formation
Nativity’s Respect Life Action Group: Nine parishioners went to Washington DC on January 22 to peacefully give witness to the sanctity of all human life. The estimated crowd size at the March For Life 2015 was two hundred thousand. Did you miss it on the news? No wonder: the media regularly ignores this tremendous witness for human
rights.
The Bowl-A-Thon to support Mothers’ Home will take place next Saturday February 7, 3-5 PM at Sproul
Lanes. Call the Rectory to sign up; the cost is $20 each, including shoes, food and sodas.
We continue to seek ideas for places and ways that we can be “the hands of Christ” in service of Life. For any
questions or suggestions, please call Bill and Linda Kussmaul at 610-566-4416, or email Linda at [email protected]
“O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of Life. Grant that all who
believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of Life with honesty and love to the people of our time.”
-- prayer of Pope St. John Paul II
Pope Francis reminds us that the best “present” in life is encountering the “Presence” of Jesus– an encounter that will last a lifetime! We here at Nativity are truly blessed to have Adoration each week
Sunday through Friday in our beautiful chapel. What a wonderful sacred space to spend time with our
Eucharistic Lord. The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ is on the altar. What a present
in His Presence!
Hours when the Chapel is Empty: Mondays: 8am, 8pm & 9pm Tuesdays: 8am
Wednesdays: 11am, Noon & 2pm Fridays: 2pm
If you are willing to sign up for an hour each week, please call Donna at the Rectory Office.

Social Ministry & Outreach
St. John’s Hospice needs TRAVEL SIZE toiletries: shampoo, lotion, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste and a bars of soap. They also need men’s t-shirts and boxer underwear in sizes M, L & XL. There is a bin in the back of church for drop off.
Please keep the casseroles coming! Casseroles can be dropped off at the Priest’s Garage
on Church St (behind Brick Building). For your convenience, we have a clothing donation bin right next to garage.
The Calix Society: Are you currently in a 12-step program? Would you like
to be able to freely discuss how your Catholic faith, Christ, and His Sacraments nourish your recovery? If so, The Calix Society is for you! This group
is used to enhance (not replace) 12-step groups with an emphasis upon our journey in Christ.
Our next meeting will be Monday February 9th. We participate in Eucharistic adoration from 6:15 pm-7 pm followed by a discussion on the “The 12 Steps and the Sunday readings” in the Brick Building. You will find healthy discussions on the current scripture readings as we strive for a deeper understanding of the Gospels and how they can apply to our
journey. Newcomers are always welcome! If interested, please contact Amy at 610-405-7747 or Harry at 610-316-5560.
Education & Youth Ministry
Catholic Schools Week – Service and Jubilation
This week during Catholic Schools week, our students celebrated the gift of a Catholic Education
with service projects, games and a special presentation from BLOCS. Our Open House last Sunday
was a huge success and we had dozens of new families tour the school. The students made Breakfast
Bags for a local food bank, the Book Fair was in full swing all week and BLOCS (Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools) visited
our school on Thursday to present a check for over $45,000 in EITC/OSTC scholarship funds! This money will go a long way in helping
students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend our school due to financial reasons. Thank you to all the local businesses who contributed
to this scholarship fund!
Tuition Transfer Grants are Available – Register Early!
Tuition Transfer Grants are available for first through eighth graders who register for next school year. The grants offer $1000 off your
child’s first year tuition and $500 off the second year. Tuition Transfer Grants are available to any first through eighth grade students who
currently attend a public, private or charter schools. Students who are currently enrolled in another Archdiocesan grade school are not eligible to receive these grants. We encourage you to register early for next year if you are considering a transfer to Mother of Providence. Most
of our current families have already registered and there is limited availability in some of our classes. Please contact our Advancement Director, Linda Rooney, at [email protected] to learn more about Catholic Schools Week activities and Tuition Transfer Grants that are
available for next year.
MPRCS Drama Club is presenting Seussical Junior and could use your help!
Do You Like To Sew?! Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School’s Drama Club will be presenting Seussical Jr. in April and is inviting members of the parish community who get excited thinking about making costumes for bunches of delightful children to be a part of it
all! If you want to know more, please contact Ann Marie Bodi via e-mail at [email protected] or leave her a message on her phone at 610

About Our School:
Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School serves the parish communities of Nativity BVM in Media and St. John Chrysostom in Wallingford. We offer a strong faith-based academic program to children in grades Pre-K 3 through eight. Please contact Mrs. Therese Waters at
[email protected] or 610-876-7110 for more information and to schedule a tour of Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School.
MPRCS offers a program for children who are three years old by August 31. The PK3 program is half day or full day; three days or five
days. For children who are four years of age by August 31, we offer a five day PK4 program that can be half days or full days. Our Kindergarten program is for children who are five years old by August 31 and it is a full day program. There is limited space in our Kindergarten
program for next year.
MPRCS offers CARES (Children Are Receiving Extended Services) from 7:00-8:00 AM before school. After school, CARES is offered
until 5:45 Mondays through Thursdays and until 5:30 on Fridays.
Designate MPRCS as a recipient for your company’s PA Tax payments!
Did you know that you can designate MPRCS as a recipient for your company’s PA tax dollars? If you are a business owner and your company was formed in Pennsylvania, you can divert those PA corporate tax dollars to MPRCS to be used towards scholarships for students.
Mother of Providence has been working with BLOCS (Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools) to identify and use EITC dollars. The process is simple but you need to act quickly to be eligible for this program for your 2014 taxes. Please visit our website at http://
www.mpregional.org/eitc-contributions or contact our Advancement Director, Linda Rooney, at [email protected] for more information.

The World Meeting of Families to be hosted by the Archdiocese will take place from September 2227, 2015. The official prayer for the World Meeting is listed below. The Archbishop requests that we
pray the prayer each day until September 27, 2015– the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families.
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior you made us
your sons and daughters in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world
be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph pray for us!
