Pen & Teller - Peace Style
No, the world famous stage magicians, Penn & Teller are not coming to Peace Lutheran. But
sometimes we might get the impression that certain tasks do get done by “magic.” Ever wonder
what happens to the offering plates after they make their rounds in the Sanctuary? That’s where
our tellers and their pens come in. You’ll find them every Sunday
morning in the church office where they count and record the generous
donations made during each service. They also prepare bank deposits
to insure the funds are available to support the ministries of Peace.
Our tellers are dedicated, but they need help. This is an opportunity for
you to become involved in the life of your church by being available just
1 Sunday a month to assist. No experience is necessary and complete
training is provided. If you can balance a checkbook, then you can be a
teller. Tellers work in teams of two so you are never alone. Please
contact Marcie Robinson: 414-736-9786 or [email protected]
Have You Received Your Offering Envelopes?
If you are an active, giving member of Peace Lutheran you should have started receiving packets
of our new offering envelopes delivered to your home. You should have envelopes for January,
and will shortly (if you haven’t already) receive a packet for February.
The envelopes are mailed to those members with assigned envelope numbers. If you have not
received yours, or are a new individual or family attending Peace and would like to receive them,
please let the church office know. Simply drop an email to [email protected] or call
301-843-1832 during office hours. Be sure to provide your name, full address, and telephone
number.
This is a new process for Peace and while we had tried to be as accurate as possible, there are
always some glitches when implementing a new system. We’ll do our best to resolve any
problems as quickly as possible.

Observations From the Church Office
Suck it Up Dan - It’s Only a Cold!
You’re taking your evening stroll and see a stray dog shivering in
the cold, and you reach down to pet and comfort him. Perhaps
you also take him to a place of shelter. You see a squirrel dart out
into the road in front of your car, and you risk your own safety to
avoid hitting him. You see birds sitting on bare branches,
desperate for seeds and a drink of water, and you willingly provide a heated bird bath and a
feeder to help them through the dark days of winter. But then, you come upon this weary
observer (that’s me, in case you’re wondering), tissues piled up in front of him, nose as red as a
cherry, sneezing, coughing, eyes puffed out and pleading for sympathy, and you look at this
wretched creature and offer this bit of comforting advice: “Suck it up. It’s only a cold!” My eyes
give you the answer my voice cannot, “I can’t suck it up. My nose is congested and my throat is
sore.” But all you see is a malingerer trying to avoid a little work.
It was sort of like that this weekend, as my ever struggling wife was straining to take down our
over extended Christmas decorations while I just wanted to cuddle up with some ice cream, a
blanket, and a box of tissues. Of course, I’d been doing that already for 2 days, ergo the
admonishment.
Yes, I’ve got a cold, and no, I do not want to “suck it up.” I want to suffer a little and get a little of
that loving treatment that my mother used to give to me. She never told me to man up, she just
put a little pat of Vicks VapoRub under my nose and told me everything would feel better in the
morning. And most of the time it did. In truth, I didn’t do much in the way of undecorating this past
weekend, and between my wife and our always loving dog, Darby, I got plenty of TLC. It was
enough to get me into the office on Monday. I didn’t exactly suck it up, but I suppose I did
somewhat overcome the lethargy.
Sometimes even the strongest of us need a little comforting and reassuring. Jesus himself on
the night in which he was betrayed, asked for comfort from his disciples. He said to them, “My
soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”“
wanting them only to stay awake with Him while He prayed. Later He asked God directly, “My
Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.” The disciples let Jesus down in His hour
of need, but God provided that comfort and reassurance that was needed in order for His Son to
fulfill his destiny. How trivial are our concerns when compared with the challenges our Savior
faced. After all, I’ve only got a cold.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to my recliner, apply a little Vicks, and do my
best to suck it up.

A lesson for Dr. Fosdick
Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick was a preacher, scholar and teacher who
served Riverside Church in New York City in the first half of the 20th
century. While walking one day, he stopped to talk with a young woman
and her 4-year-old daughter. As the conversation drew to a close, the
preacher told the little girl to tell her father that she had spoken to Dr.
Harry Emerson Fosdick.
The child responded by saying, “Tell your mother that you talked to Susie Smith.”

Lemon aid
The staff of a Tempe, Arizona, church was in a meeting when someone knocked on the door.
There stood a mother and her eleven-year-old son. The mother apologized for the interruption but
said her son had something to say. He told the group that he had heard the pastor mention that
many people were starving in Niger. In response, the boy set up a lemonade stand, which brought
in $17.00. He handed the pastor an envelope and asked her to send the money to the agency that
was distributing food in that drought-stricken African country.
This "lemon-aid" from one of their youngest church members touched the staff and illustrated that
the bread we throw upon the waters - preaching, teaching, showing by example - can bring a
return in Christian love and support from all age groups.
Not a Sermon… Just a LENTEN FAITH TALK
The Faith Talks take place during the Lenten evening worship time. These talks generally last
from 2 to 4 minutes. Worship and Music is seeking recruits for this powerful and moving practice.
What is your faith story? What life event caused you to connect with your faith in a powerful and
meaningful manner?
You will be in great company when you answer the call: Don, Judy, Daryl, Lena, Carole, Tim,
Mandy, and Andi are some members who have accepted the call in past years. How has God
moved you to share your faith story with others during the Lenten worship seasons? Prayerfully
consider doing so this year. You cannot imagine what impact your words can have on those
around you…but God can. Answer the call…
Faith Talks start after Ash Wednesday (February 18) on Wednesday, February 25, and continue
to Wednesday, March 4,11, 18, and 25.
Worship and Music can help you prepare, if necessary, too! To sign up to share your story, contact
Gretta Williams at [email protected].
