The Program Today
Glen Coffee, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/Retired
Environmental Consultant, “The Erosion of Dauphin Island”
Glen Coffee received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from
the University of Alabama. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers in 2004 after a +31-year career spent entirely in the
Mobile District Office. His work experience included preparation
of National Environmental Policy Act documents and
development of plans for both Civil and Military projects. He was
the first non-engineer to serve as a Project Manager in the Mobile
District. In addition to working at various locations throughout
the United States, he also worked in numerous countries in
Central and South America and served a stint in Iraq. Of his
experiences with the Corps, Glen rates two jobs as being very
special to him. The first included his work as the Project Manager
on the $93 million Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Wildlife
Mitigation Project that included the purchase and development of
over 93,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods. Those lands,
together with another 90,000 acres of Corps lands were used to
create 10 new wildlife management areas in Alabama and
Mississippi. The Alabama Wildlife Federation recognized his
efforts in 1999 by presenting him with the Governor’s
Conservationist of the Year award. His second most meaningful
project involved his efforts as the Project Manager for the
Guatemala Hurricane Mitch Recovery Program that included the
restoration of damaged irrigation systems, protection of poor
villages from flooding, and the repair of damaged roads in the
country’s most rural areas. Since 2004, Glen continues to work as
an environmental consultant with a number of local and national
engineering firms.

of the meeting due to the speakers’ tight schedules. The first
speaker was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars Gus
Bradley. Mr. Bradley was introduced by Phil Savage, executive
director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Mr. Bradley was a graduate assistant and later defensive
coordinator for North Dakota State University, a line backers
coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2006-08), and the
defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks (2009-12)
before becoming the head coach of the Jaguars. He is
coaching the South team in this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Coach Bradley talked about motivation and how the players he
is coaching in the Reese’s Senior Bowl have various reasons to
be there—to showcase their talent, and as an introduction to
other NFL coaches. He said that people claim it is impossible

Next up was Brooke Rucker, Distinguished Young Woman of
America, who was introduced by Jeffery Adams. Ms. Rucker
first learned about Distinguished Young Women from her
older brother when she was 11 years old. He said that she
would love it, and when the time came for her to apply at the
county level, she did love it. The Distinguished Young
Women program is all about shaping you to become the
best you can be. It is about gaining confidence, helping
other girls reach their full potential and dreams. President
Robinson thanked Ms. Rucker and presented her a speaker
certificate with a donation that went to the Distinguished
Young Women program.

to form a team in a week, but he sees it happen. This is done
by the players eliminating their personal agendas. Coach
Bradley says that the people of Mobile have a genuine
appreciation for football. Seven players for the Jacksonville
Jaguars played in last year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl. Coach
Bradley mentioned that the players “compete” in the old
sense of the word—not against, but to strive for. He said the
strongest form of leadership is “servant leadership” in which
one has no agenda, and strives for the betterment of others.
A question was asked of him about the longevity of NFL
players. He mentioned that the players who are internally
motivated tend to play in the league the longest.
