VOCATION CORNER
What is prayer all about?
Clement of Alexandria, a popular teacher of the early
Church, put it simply: “Prayer is conversation with God.”
Like any conversation, it goes both ways. We talk to God,
and he talks to us. God loves us more than we can imagine. He wants us to get to know and love Him as a Father.
Like any loving parent, He wants to spend time talking
with His children.
Doesn’t prayer include asking God for
something?
Heb 6:10-20; Ps 111:1-2, 4-5, 9, 10c;
Mk 2:23-28
Wednesday: Heb 7:1-3, 15-17; Ps 110:1-4; Mk 3:1-6
Thursday: Heb 7:25 — 8:6; Ps 40:7-10, 17; Mk 3:7-12,
or any of a number of readings for the Day
of Prayer
Friday:
Heb 8:6-13; Ps 85:8, 10-14; Mk 3:13-19
Saturday: Heb 9:2-3, 11-14; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9;
Mk 3:20-21
Sunday:
Jon 3:1-5, 10; Ps 25:4-9; 1 Cor 7:29-31;
Mk 1:14-20
Of course! Think of a small child who is hungry. If the
child comes to Daddy asking for food, he’s delighted to
answer that request. And if a human fathers, Jesus
reminded us, know how to give good gifts to their
children when asked, “how much more will your Father
who is in heaven give good things to those who ask
him!” (Matthew 7:9-11).
In fact, most of the Our Father is devoted to this important aspect of prayer: petition. We ask God to provide for
us (“our daily bread”), guide us (“lead us no into temptation”), and protect us (“deliver us from evil”). He cares
about us, and He’s delighted to answer our prayers. “Have
no anxiety about anything.” St. Paul insisted, “but
in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians
4:6). Just tell God what you need.

That time of year is fastly approaching
again! If you are in need of a statement for
your taxes this year. Please call the rectory
office (909) 629-4101 with the following
information. Your name, address, current
telephone number and envelope # if known.
Another important aspect for praying we can’t forget is
intercession, which is prayer for others. St. Paul urged
that intercessions “be made for all” (1 Timothy 2:1).
Everyone has some need for God’s help. It’s your privilege to ask for it on their behalf. Even if you know that
they themselves are praying, you can join them in their
requests. Our heavenly Father is pleased to see His
children helping one another that way.
When you pray for others, you find that your own life
changes. Your heart grows warmer toward people in
need. You’re not as upset by the difficulties in your own
life, because you’re more aware of the troubles other
people have. You find yourself more willing to help
people in other ways as well.
NOTA ESPECIAL DE INTERÉS.

impuestos, si usted necesita el comprobante de
sus contribuciones a la iglesia por el año 2014,

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of
Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick.
People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right
time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was
often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus,
rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health,
strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred
years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it
is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of
healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the
ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true
“last rite.”
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem
reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are
in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those
who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to
death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally
when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a
source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead.
When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong
to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the
presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and
hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the
symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait
until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich
remedy to body and soul?

RECOGNIZING SIGNS OF
CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT
The key to reporting child abuse and neglect is being
able to recognize common indicators. In children, the
following signs may signal the presence of child abuse
or neglect: Shows sudden changes in behavior or
school performance. Has not received help for physical
or medical problems brought to the parents’ attention.
Is always watchful, as though preparing for something
bad to happen. Is overly compliant, passive, or withdrawn. Comes to school or other activities early, stays
late, and does not want to go home. To learn more
about child abuse prevention, visit: http://
www.archdiocese.la/protecing/index.php. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637

St. Blaise Day
The blessing of throats couldn’t
come at a better time as we all seem to
be coughing our way through the
winter months. But soon everyone will
have a chance at healing.
On Tuesday, February 3, in honor of
the feast day of St. Blaise, we will hold
the annual blessing to protect people
against and heal them from throat
ailments at our regular 8:05 Mass.
Many of us have fond memories of this ceremony, when
priest or lay minister places two blessed candles joined in
the shape of a cross at each person’s throat and says a
prayer for their health. We hope you can join us for this
special tradition and have your throat blessed for a
healthy year.
La Presentacion del Niño Dios al
Templo
