Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tomorrow (Monday), we commemorate the birth of the
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader,
who adopted a non-violent approach to trying to make our
country more just and equal, especially (but not
exclusively) for Black Americans. King was assassinated
on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 39.
Among other achievements, Dr. King was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Monday is a national
holiday, and our parish office and school will be
closed for the day.
MARCH FOR LIFE
Washington, DC
The annual March for Life (opposing abortion) will take
place this Thursday January 22nd, the 42nd anniversary of
the Supreme Court’s decision (Roe v Wade) legalizing
abortion in our country. The Diocese is sponsoring bus
transportation to and from our nation’s capital. Can you
march? Please contact our office and we will give you
more information. Please pray for an end to abortion in
our country, especially among our Catholic people.
Sunday, Jan. 18, begins a week of prayer for Christian
Unity. The Church invites us to pray and work for the day
when all who call themselves “Christian” will be able to
worship our heavenly Father at the same altar,
celebrating the same sacraments, and professing the
same faith.

From the Pastor’s Desk –
I begin this weekend’s column with some good news.
The water leaks that developed in Barretta Hall from
pipes connected to our new boiler have been fixed. The
repairs were completed last Monday, so we did not have
to displace any groups that use the hall each week. Other
news: our recent Blood Donation Drive collected 7 units of
Blood from 10 potential donors. It would seem that
Fridays are not good days to run a blood drive. I will
recommend to the NY Blood Center that we return to a
Sunday schedule.
We welcome back Msgr. Edward Wetterer, who is our
celebrant for today’s 11:30 a.m. Mass. Msgr. Wetter is the
recently retired pastor of St. Michael Church (Flushing). I
am grateful for his help, last Sunday and this, as well as
Fr. Governale, while Fr. Villegas is away.
Finally, Bishop DiMarzio accepted my request to stay
on as pastor, and renewed me for a 2nd 6-year term. I am
glad, and I hope you are, too. There is so much work to
do in this part of the Lord’s vineyard. God bless you. –
Fr. Hoppe.

The Church of St. Leo
Del Escritorio del Párroco:
Comienzo la columna de esta semana trayéndoles
buenas noticias.

atuendos africanos.

YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of
Consecrated Life in the Universal Church. We
recognize and give thanks for the many men and women
in the Diocese of Brooklyn who have consecrated their
lives to God and the Church as Sisters, Brothers,
Religious Order Priests, Secular Institutes and
Consecrated Virgins. Through the vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience the members of consecrated life
deepen their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus
by the witness they give in service to their many
ministries, living in community and being available to the
People of God.
The Diocese of Brooklyn has many events planned to
recognize and celebrate this special year. You can find
these and other resources on the Diocesan website at:
www.dioceseofbrooklyn.org/vocations/year-consecratedlife.
PLEASE: silence all cell ‘phones and other electronic
devices when visiting our church to pray / celebrate Mass.
No food or drink is permitted in the church. Please leave
all misalettes and hymn books in church, and return them
to their slots on the back of the benches before you leave.
And please be gentle with the furniture. There is no need
to bang the kneelers down during Mass. Thank you for
keeping our church a place that is worthy of the name
“house of God.”
“When we GIVE we SHARE the Light of Faith”
2014 Annual Catholic Appeal
Diocese of Brooklyn
The Annual Catholic Appeal for 2014 officially ended on
Dec. 31, 2014 (but you can still complete your pledges, if
you have not done so already). The latest report we have
from the Diocesan office (Dec. 19) shows that 256 of us
(9.52% of 2,688 members) made pledges to the Appeal
totaling $46,146.00. We fulfilled our diocesan goal
($36,112.00), and pledged $46,146.00, coming within
$14,854.00 of the goal of $61,000.00 that we set for
ourselves to pay for our new church boiler. As of the
above date, our payments equaled $41,108.90 (about
$20,000 short. There will probably be a final report on the
Appeal totals coming out soon. When it does, you will find
it here in the Bulletin. Thank you to all who contributed to
our success with the Appeal.
Words of Wisdom from… Sacred Scripture –
“Then the king will say…Come, you who are blessed by
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you…for I
was hungry and you gave me food…” (Matt 25:34-35).
Our parish offers food to those in need through a Food
Pantry. Please remember to bring some non-perishable
food with you when you come for Mass next week. Thank
you. Assuming we have enough food, the next distribution
will be Wednesday, January 28, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
in Msgr. Barretta Hall.
