2014 Annual Catholic Appeal
Diocese of Brooklyn
The Annual Catholic Appeal for 2014 has officially ended
(but you can still complete your pledges, if you have not
done so already). The latest report we have from the
Diocesan office (Dec. 19) shows that 256 of us (9.52% of
2,688 members) made pledges to the Appeal. We fulfilled
our diocesan goal ($36,112.00), and pledged $46,146.00,
coming within $14,854.00 of the goal of $61,000.00 that
we set for ourselves to pay for our new church boiler. As
of the above date, our payments equaled $41,108.90
(about $20,000 short. There will probably be a final report
on the Appeal totals coming out soon. When it does, you
will find it here in the Bulletin. Thank you to all who
contributed to our success with the Appeal.
MARCH FOR LIFE
Washington, DC
The annual March for Life (opposing abortion) will take
place on Thursday, January 22nd. The Diocese is
sponsoring bus transportation to and from our nation’s
capital. Can you march? Please contact our office and we
will give you more information. Please pray for an end to
abortion in our country, especially among our Catholic

From the Pastor’s Desk –
Today is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord and the last
day of the Christmas season. Tomorrow, we begin “Ordinary
Time,” which will last for about 5 and one-half weeks until the
beginning of Lent, on February 18th. Today is a good day to
give thanks to God for the gift of our baptism.
By now, I am sure you have all heard about the fire that
damaged Our Lady of Sorrows church last Sunday. Fire is
such a terrible thing; it robs people of their possessions, their
homes, and in this case, their place of worship. As we pray
for the people of our sister-parish, let us look for ways to
help. I’ll pass on any information to you as I get it. This
terrible incident reminds me to ask you to refrain from
placing lit candles at our two outdoor shrines (Mary, the
Immaculate Conception, and Jesus Crucified). I often find
candles at these places, near flowers or even on the grass,
which can easily catch fire. We do not need a fire here!!!
I had planned to present our parish and school financial
reports at all the Masses last weekend. However, with so
many people from Our Lady of Sorrows joining us for the
11:30 and 1:00 Masses, I decided to put it off until this
weekend. I am sure you will understand.
Over the Christmas holidays, I received a beautiful note –
and a check for $500.00 – from the pastor of St. Luke parish,
in Whitestone, Msgr. John Tosi. The only “string” attached to
the check was that the money be used to purchase food for
our Food Pantry. What a beautiful gesture! Please pray for
the good people of St. Luke, and for their pastor, Msgr. Tosi.
I’ll close this week’s column with a Thank-You to all who
have inquired about my health. I am fine, but I do need to
take it easy from time to time. I admit I must learn how to do
that in this busy parish. But I’ll learn, with God’s help, and

Vicariate of Black Catholic Concerns
Prayer Service
The Diocese of Brooklyn is sponsoring a Prayer Service
Celebration, Commemorating the Birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., on Monday, Jan. 19 at 12:00 noon. It will
feature as guest speaker the Rev. Alonzo Cox, and will take
place at St. Martin de Porres / Our Lady of Victory, 583
Throop Ave, Brooklyn (between MacDonough and Macon
Streets). This event is free to the public, and refreshments

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO:
Hoy es la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor y el ultimo día
de la temporada navideña. Mañana comenzamos con el
"Tiempo Ordinario", que durará aproximadamente cinco
semanas y media hasta el comienzo de la Cuaresma, el
18 de febrero. Hoy es un buen día para darle gracias a
Dios por habernos regalado nuestro bautismo.
Me imagino que ya habrán escuchado sobre el incendio
que dañó la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores el
pasado domingo. Un incendio puede ser un hecho
terrible, porque puede escamotearle a una persona sus
posesiones, hogares y, en este caso, su lugar de
adoración. Según rezamos por los feligreses de esta
hermana parroquia, busquemos formas de ayudarlos. Les
pasaré a ustedes cualquier información que me vaya
llegando. Este incidente terrible me hace recordar que
debo pedirles que dejen de poner velas encendidas en
nuestras dos capillas exteriores: a María, la Inmaculada
Concepción y a Jesús Crucificado. A veces encuentro
velas en estos lugares, cerca de flores o aun en la hierba,
que pueden fácilmente incendiarse. ¡¡No ne necesitamos
un fuego aquí!!
Había planeado presentar nuestros informes financieros
de la parroquia y el colegio católico en todas las misas de
la semana pasada. Habiendo habido tanta gente de
Nuestra Señora de los Dolores junto a nosotros en las
misas de las 11:30 y 1 de la tarde, decidí posponerlo
hasta esta semana. Espero que hayan entendido.
Durante las fiestas navideñas, recibí una tarjeta hermosa
junto a un cheque de 500 dólares, de parte del párroco
de San Lucas en Whitestone, monseñor John Tosi. La
única "condición" adherida al cheque es que sea utilizado
para comprar alimentos para nuestra Despensa. ¡Qué
gesto más bonito! Rueguen por favor por la buena gente
de San Lucas y por su párroco, el monseñor Tosi.
Quiero terminar con esta columna agradeciéndoles a
todos los que han preguntado por mi salud. Estoy bien,
pero sí reconozco que debo tomarlo suave de cuando en
cuando. Admito que debo aprender a hacer eso en esta
parroquia tan atareada. Pero sé que aprenderé con la
ayuda de Dios y de ustedes. Que Dios los bendiga.--el padre Hoppe.

oración para conmemorar el nacimiento del reverendo
Martin Luther King, hijo, el lunes, 19 de enero,
comenzando a las 12 del mediodía. El servicio tendrá
como disertante invitado al reverendo Alonzo Cox, y

EL AÑO DE LA VIDA CONSAGRADA
MISA DE ACCION DE GRACIAS
La Diócesis de Brooklyn le invita a celebrar el Mes de la
Historia Afroamericana con una Misa de Acción de
Gracias el domingo, 8 de febrero, a las 3 de la tarde. La
misa será oficiada por el Reverendísimo Shelton Fabre,
Obispo de Houma-Thibodaux, Luisiana. Nuestro propio
obispo Guy Sansaricq, vicario de asuntos católicos para
afroamericanos, estará concelebrando. Se llevará a cabo
en la catedral de San José, localizada en el 856 de la
calle Pacific en Brooklyn. La entrada también es gratuita
y se servirán refrigerios. Vístanse por favor en sus
atuendos africanos.
El Papa Francisco ha declarado en la Iglesia Universal el
año 2015 como el Año de la Vida Consagrada. Nosotros
reconocemos y damos gracias por muchos hombres y

Mass of Thanksgiving
The Diocese of Brooklyn invites you to celebrate Black
History Month with a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday,
February 8 at 3:00 p.m., celebrated by Most Rev. Shelton

will concelebrate. It will take place at the Co-Cathedral of
St. Joseph, 856 Pacific Street, Brooklyn. This event is

La Marcha Anual por la Vida, que se lleva a cabo en
Washington, D.C. en contra de la práctica del aborto,
tendrá efecto el jueves, 22 de enero. La Diócesis está
auspiciando la transportación por autobuses desde acá
hasta la capital de la nación. ¿Puede y quiere usted

YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of
Consecrated Life in the Universal Church. We
recognize and give thanks for the many men and women
in the Diocese of Brooklyn who have consecrated their
lives to God and the Church as Sisters, Brothers,
Religious Order Priests, Secular Institutes and
Consecrated Virgins. Through the vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience the members of consecrated life
deepen their baptismal commitment as followers of Jesus
by the witness they give in service to their many
ministries, living in community and being available to the
People of God.
The Diocese of Brooklyn has many events planned to
recognize and celebrate this special year. You can find

Our parish offers food to those in need through a Food
