Priest Perspective
Ladies & Gents,
It’s official I’m B.O.I.! Back on the
island. After a whirlwind tour of many
different places I’ve returned. And I’m
somewhat settled back into the pace of
life here on the island and in the parish.
The local newspaper was gracious
to report on my recent encounter with
Pope Francis. It was truly a surprise. I
was excited to attend such a meeting just
to be in the near vicinity of the pope. As
it turned out I was chosen by an event coordinator to represent the American
priests. Actually, there was a disappointing few number of Americans there. So,
when it came time to choosing a representative it was a short list. I was chosen
due to being a Franciscan Friar. And coincidentally the seminarian who was chosen to represent the American seminarians was also from our Archdiocese-he is
studying in Rome!
It was a great spiritual experience to
see the pope up close and personal. I
prayed for y’all, our HFP parishioners,
throughout my trip. I represented each of
you as much as the American priests as I
shook the hand of the pope.
But in the end he himself would remind us: we are all called to be holy and
not just revere a man like the pope but to
become like him, like Jesus Christ.
Peace and Good,
fr. richard

What is a Novena? A novena is a traditional Roman Catholic devotion
consisting of a powerful set of prayers prayed publicly or privately, most commonly on nine consecutive days, and usually for a special intention. One does
not have to be Catholic to pray a novena, all who desire to become closer to the
Lord are welcome to experience the many blessings this special form of prayer
can bestow.
The Miraculous Medal...originally known as the medal of the Immaculate Conception, was
shown to Saint Catherine Labouré on November 27, 1830 with Brilliant rays of light streaming down
from her outstretched fingers. Around the figure was the inscription: O Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to thee. Mary instructed Catherine: “Have a medal struck upon this
model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck.” The
Medals were first made and distributed in Paris in 1832, upon approval by the Catholic Church. Almost immediately many blessings were bestowed upon wearers of the medal, just as Mary had promised. Use of the medal today is worldwide, and the stories of the blessings continue to be spread.

futuro

Our History…….is amazing!!!
This “history” is about… Preserving Our History!
On page 8, you will see photo evidence of recent work that has been done within our parish. Generally
the heavy work is done in such a way that you never see it. For example, the shoring up of the center
point roof in the front of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. Soon work will begin to repair the organ at St.
Mary’s in anticipation of the August 6th 2016 Sacred Places Tour. You may be interested to know the
roof at St. Patrick Church will need approximately $300,000.00 for its upcoming repair. Also, termite
damage to our buildings is an ongoing challenge. These important projects do not stand out nor do they
get your attention. Holy Family Parish supports 6 church structures and rectories at three of the churches, office facilities & the Parish Life Center at St. Patrick Church, and parking lots at all 6 churches, in addition to lawn care and landscaping for multiple properties. We also provide support for Holy Family Catholic School and O’Connell High School.
It may seem that we are always asking for donations. Three of our churches are historical buildings that
were originally built in the 1800s and they require structural maintenance.
You support us with your money, your talent, and your time. We wanted to take this opportunity
to show you some of the items and work that is being done behind the scenes. We extend our
most sincere gratitude for your assistance and will endeavor to do a better job in reporting the
uses of funds to you in the future.
