MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This
mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as
found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today
and they will reply “Palm Sunday.” Not too long ago, today was known
as the “Second Sunday of the Passion,” and in 1970 it was renamed
“Passion Sunday.” This made some sense, since the procession
recalling Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in
a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every
liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both
aspects of the celebration: “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.”
In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm
branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and
in Italy olive branches are the norm.
When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week
to come was revised even as the traditional name, “Holy Week,” was
retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help
us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this
Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart
of the Christian life.
Today, as you ponder the Lord’s Passion, you may consider your
response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go
on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, at least once in your lifetime, promise to
participate faithfully in the liturgies. Now begins the Church’s annual
baptismal retreat: don’t be left out!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La liturgia oficial de la Iglesia para el Domingo de Ramos es algo
paradójica. Entramos proclamando Hosannas con cantos y vítores y al
poco tiempo estamos gritando: “¡crucifícalo, crucifícalo!” Según el rito la
lectura del Evangelio y la consagración de la Eucaristía se hacen dentro
del templo, pero se comienza afuera del templo con la bendición de los
ramos.
En Estados Unidos y otros países latinoamericanos se usan
palmas en lugar de ramos. En Europa, normalmente, se usan ramos de
olivos. Últimamente en Colombia para proteger la palma de cera del
Quindío, se les ha pedido a los fieles que usen ramitas de plantas o
ramos de flores. Estoy de acuerdo hay que proteger el ambiente, pero
admito que prefiero las palmas, ya que es difícil poner un ramo de olivo
o de flores detrás de una imagen sagrada colgada en la pared. Esta es una
costumbre latina que nos recuerda que los “hosannas” y el “crucifícalo”
del domingo de ramos nos acompañan todos los días del año.

Domingo de Ramos “de la Pasión del Señor”

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
In today’s readings, we are provided the Lord’s concrete
example of his absolutely total commitment to his people. From
the beginning of the world, the Lord made a commitment to be our
redemption. In the First Reading, we are reminded that he has “given
us a well-trained tongue” that his Word, Jesus. Herein Isaiah we have
the images of the “Servant of the Lord or suffering servant”. But, it is
quite more than the image of the servant; it is our example of the total
commitment we are to make for the sake of our Lord. The Passion of
the Lord in the Gospel of Luke is the commitment or promise that is
fulfilled by Jesus. Even though Jesus, in his humanness prayers to the
Father “to take this cup away from me” his love for the Father and his
acceptance of the final hour exceeded his human desire—his purpose
was to fulfill the Plan of Salvation.
We therefore should unequivocally understand what was done for us
by our Savior. . . empty ourselves, humble ourselves and become
obedient to the point of death to our sinful past and be born anew in
the spirit of our Lord with a faithful response to the Word of God.
Sometimes it is difficult to imagine or accept that Jesus died on the
cross for my sake and yet this is what he did. Let us be one with our
Lord as he enters Jerusalem fully aware of his coming suffering, death
and resurrection. As we are about to enter the Holy Week of Easter, I
pray your Lenten journey has been one of self-reflection, prayer and a
journey that led you closer to Christ. Openly accept his love and let us
be reconciled in His divine mercy. Glory to Christ in the highest.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
En las lecturas de hoy, el Señor concreta el ejemplo de su
compromiso total con su pueblo. Desde el comienzo del mundo, el
Señor hace un compromiso para ser nuestra redención. En la Primera
Lectura, se nos recuerda que El “nos ha dado una lengua entrenada”
que es su Palabra, Jesús. En Isaías tenemos las imagenes de el
“Servidor del Señor o el servidor sufriente.” Pero, es mucho más que
la imagen del servidor, es un ejemplo de un compromiso total que
debemos hacer para la gloria de nuestro Dios. La Pasión del Señor en
el Evangelio de San Lucas es el compromiso o la promesa que se
cumple con Jesús. Aun cuando Jesús en su humanidad ora al Padre
diciendole “Aleja de mi este cáliz” su amor por el Padre y su aceptación
de la hora final va mucho más allá de su deseo humano—su propósito
de cumplir el Plan de Salvación.
Por lo tanto, debemos entender que esto fue hecho por nosotros por
nuestro Salvador. . .vaciémonos de nosotros mismos, seamos humildes
y obedientes al punto de morir a nuestro pasado pecaminoso y nacer
de nuevo en el espíritu de nuestro Señor como una respuesta fiel a la
Palabra de Dios. Algunas veces es díficil imaginar o aceptar que Jesús
murió en la cruz por mí y esto es realmente lo que El hizo. Seamos uno
con nuestro Señor mientrás entra a Jerusalén con pleno conocimiento
de su próximo sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección. Al prepararnos para la
Semana Santa, ruego para que su Cuaresma haya sido de reflexion
personal, oración y de un caminar que le haya guiado mas cercas a
Cristo. Aceptemos su amor abiertamente y reconciliemonos con su
divina misericordia, ¡Gloria en las Alturas!

SANTO TORIBIO DE MOGROVEJO (1538-1606)

Toribio nació en Mallorca, España y desde muy joven mostró un
interés y conocimiento notable del derecho civil llegando a ser profesor de
Derecho en Salamanca y juez inquisitorio. Siendo laico recibió el nombramiento de Arzobispo de Lima, por pedido del rey Felipe II al Papa Gregorio
XIII. Llegó a Lima, Perú en 1581 y quedó sorprendido al ser testigo de los
abusos de los conquistadores y la poca atención del clero hacia los pobres,
pues se habían hecho del lado de los opresores. Esta situación le conmovió
tanto que fue el primero en convocar un Concilio de obispos en América;
como fruto del mismo Concilio se logró la impresión de catecismos y libros
de texto en el idioma vernáculo, promoviendo además, una renovación en la
vida de los sacerdotes. Visitó todas las comunidades de su diócesis en tres
ocasiones, sufriendo los embates del clima, el hambre y la falta de mapas.
Además de fundar hospitales y el primer seminario de América, fue quien
trajo justicia y paz al Nuevo Mundo. Se le honra como el santo patrono de
los obispos latinoamericanos.

SAINT TORIBIO DE MOGROVEJO

In times of crisis, God always
“surprises” the Church with unlikely saints,
through whom Christ’s light radiates
beyond their local communities to illumine
the universal Church. Charles Borromeo
was such a saint: appointed Archbishop of
Milan at twenty-one by his papal uncle,
epitomizing the corruption that the
Reformers condemned, Charles instead
inspired a revival that reinvigorated a
Church devastated by the Reformation.
His less well-known contemporary, Toribio
de Mongrovejo, was God’s “saintly
surprise” in the New World. Spanish-born
lawyer, professor, head of the feared
Inquisition, Toribio was still a layman when
a grateful king appointed him Archbishop
of far-off Lima. Once in Peru, however,
Toribio was appalled at the abuse of
indigenous peoples by the occupying
conquistadores—his fellow countrymen—
and by the complicity of the clergy. He
became the natives’ devoted advocate,
building churches, schools, hospitals, and
the first seminary in the Americas,
publishing catechisms and prayerbooks in
the native languages he painstakingly
mastered. Four hundred years later,
whenever Pope Benedict welcomes Latin
American bishops to Rome, he always
invokes “the shining example of San
Toribio.”
