PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publication
and wanted to share it with you.
INSTINCTIVELY RESPONDING
When I was in junior high, my mother was mugged as we left our local library. A
man came out of nowhere, grabbed her purse, knocked her down, and ran. I was
paralyzed with fear until I heard my mother yell, “Janel, get him!” With no hesitation
or realization that this man might have a weapon, I took off after him. I got fairly
close before I heard my mom screaming for me.
When I got back, she was terrified. She had actually screamed, “Someone, get
him!” but that’s not what I’d heard. My instinct was to heed my mother’s words
even if doing so made no sense.
We see Jesus in the Gospel doing something that makes no sense to his parents –
something that wouldn’t make sense to most parents. Losing your child is every parent’s nightmare, and I can’t imagine the worry Mary and Joseph felt when they realized Jesus had stayed behind in the Temple.
However, Jesus was responding to his Father’s voice – he had an instinctual connection to his Father’s will, and he followed without question. But realizing the anxiety his actions had inadvertently caused his parents, he went home and lived obediently with them until he was grown.
We may not have been conceived without sin, but that doesn’t keep us from nurturing holiness in our families. We belong first to God, so we need to deepen our instinctual response to God’s call just as Jesus did. When we’re first rooted in right relationship with God, we’re able to more clearly see our family members’ needs and
how we can respond to those needs in love.
That’s what a “holy family” looks like.
On behalf of Fr. Pako, Deacon Charles and Olivia, Deacon Carlos
and Betty, and the OLPH Family, I'd like to wish you all a very
wonderful and joyful New Year. God bless you all!
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
A sincere thank you to
everyone who came and
celebrated Advent and Christmas with us and were so generous with
your compliments, donations and participation.
It’s the most wonderful church of the year
On behalf of our community, I'd like to thank all of our friends
and parishioners who volunteered to give us such a wonderful
"Christmas environment." You know too well how tedious it is
to put them all up! It's because of you that we truly felt "The
Spirit of Christmas" here at OLPH. A special thanks to Julie Bosdachin, Dennis Rogers, Mike and Bev Baumann, Maria "Trini"
Azucena, Denise Thomas, Aaron Espejo, and to all of you who
quietly and cheerfully served The People of God. We owe it to
you!
"Angels We Have Heard On High!"
You could not have the Christmas Spirit without "angels" singing beautiful church Christmas Carols. Thank you very much to
Amy Brent and our very own "Our Lady's Choir." In spite of
their crazy holiday schedule, they still made great sacrifices to
squeeze in intense rehearsals just to give us wonderful Christmas music and to most of all lead us in singing to our Emmanuel.
Muchas gracias to our Efrain Andrade and our spanish choir
for the beautiful music at our celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Posada “Misa de Gallo” and Christmas day mass.
For Our Lady of Guadalupe, Posada and Simbang
Gabi Celebrations
Muchisimas Gracias!
We thank Fr. Pako, Deacon Carlos and Betty Origel, the Hispanic Ministry and the rest of the Hispanic Community for the
successful Novena Masses. Also for the beautiful "Mañanita"
and the masses on the feast day of "La Virgen de Guadalupe."
Thank you for your delicious "pan dulce y champorado!"
Maraming salamat din! (Many thanks, too!) to the Filipino
Community, for serving us at Simbang Gabi. Thanks to the
leadership of the Romero and the Danganan families. Thanks
to all the core members and everyone else from all the various
ethnic groups who donated, served, and attended. Thank you
to all our guests from different parishes who came to visit us
and celebrate with us "The Word Made Flesh."
Thank you Deacon Carlos and Betty Origel and to our beloved
Hispanic Community for joining us and serving with us, too,
both in "La Misa y La Mesa."
Thanks to Lulu Macaspac, Francis Tanglao and the Filipino
choirs of St. Raymond and Holy Family, Artesia! For the sacrifice to rehearse every night to provide us great Filipino church
music.
Thank you so very much, Julie, for all the hardwork! We really
appreciate it.
For your Service
Thank you to all the ministers who served as Lectors, Eucharistic Minister, Altar Servers and Ushers, and Master of Ceremonies.
From the Servant’s Heart

Signing Up For Life!
The Physician-Assisted Suicide Bill has unfortunately become a law as Gov. Brown put his stamp
on it. But that should never stop us from defending
the lives of our brothers and sisters whom society
considers as an "expense." Thank you for your precious signatures. Let us pray hard that through our
signatures and with God's help and our Blessed
Mother's, this "unjust and inhumane law" will be
overturned. Please pray the Rosary and to our Divine Mercy. Nothing is impossible with God.
Thank you to Fr. Pako and the Respect Life Ministry
under the leadership of Glenn and Linda Malme and
all the members of Respect Life who volunteered to
gather signatures after Mass a few weeks ago.
Welcome Our Lady of Guadalupe!
We are happy to welcome the image of Our Lady
of Guadalupe to our beautiful church! This icon is
hung on the wall of our Blessed Sacrament Prayer
Room. Thank you Dennis Rogers, Mike Baumann,
Lalo Vasquez and everyone who assisted us in putting up "La Virgen" in that special spot.
Big thanks to the Fiala family especially, Bonnie
and Harvey, for donating the image. Also to The Velazquez family especially Roberto and Connie for its
beautiful frame. May the Lord and our Blessed
Mother continue to bless you and your families
abundantly.
No First Friday Exposition on January 1
We apologize for moving our usual First Friday
Blessed Sacrament exposition to the second Friday
of January. Since Friday, January 1, is a holiday we
will be closing the church right after the 10:30 am
New Year's Day Mass. Instead, the exposition and
benediction will be on January 8. Thank you for
your consideration.
New Year, New Leaf!
As we say goodbye to 2015, we pray to say goodbye to whatever it is that may have caused division
in our families and in our community. Let us move
forward and not stay stuck. It is the Jubilee Year of
Divine Mercy. Let us forgive each other and reach
out to one another. Let us also thank God for all our
blessings this 2015 and for the coming blessings of
2016.

KIDS CORNER
TIME FOR FAMILY PRAYER
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Show each child the correct path
to follow so each child can join in
family prayer.
Sometimes, kids need a place to go where
they can say what they want, and they won’t be
immediately punished or have to deal with a
negative reaction. It’s important to make sure
your child has such a space or time – after dinner conversations, an ice cream spot, riding
home from school – where they can tell you
what’s on their mind, good or bad, and you can
just listen and discuss, without taking the instant
parental approach. If your children feel safe
talking to you openly, you are better equipped to
notice and handle any red flags in their lives.

HOLY HUMOR
A PLACE AND TIME FOR EVERYTHING
While watching a movie recently, I couldn't
hear the dialogue over the chatter of the two
women sitting in front of me.
Unable to bear it any longer, I tapped one of
them on the shoulder.
"Excuse me," I said, "I can't hear."
"I should hope not," she
replied sharply. "This is a private conversation."

MINISTERIO HISPANO

abiertamente, usted estará mejor equipado/a
para notar y manejar cualquier dificultad en sus
vidas.

1 Thess 5:16-18
The first of January has
many observances: we
mark the conclusion to the
octave, the week-long celebration of the feast of
Christmas; it is New Year’s
Day; we celebrate the Day
of Prayer for World Peace;
and we observe the Solemnity of Mary, Mother
of God.
In 431, the Council of Ephesus declared the
Virgin Mary to be the Theotokos, meaning
“God-bearer.” The Church has always venerated Mary as the Mother of God; it is most fitting that this particular liturgy is celebrated on
the octave day of Christmas, during a season
that revels in the coming of the Word, made
flesh in the Virgin’s womb!
HISTORY OF THE FEAST OF
THE HOLY FAMILY
The Holy Family began to
be the focus of devotion in
the seventeenth century.
Pope Leo XIII instituted a
feast in honor of the Holy
Family in 1893, in response
to disturbing changes in family life, including secularization and an increase of divorce. Pope Benedict
XV introduced the feast into the universal calendar in 1921, and it was moved to a Sunday
in 1969 in the reforms of Vatican II.
The goal of the feast is to strengthen family
life by proposing Jesus, Mary and Joseph as
the ideal family. The sense in which the Holy
Family is ideal is in their obedience to God,
their justice and their love for one another.
