PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publication and
wanted to share it with you.
Facing Expectations
How is your Christmas going? Christmas may seem to be far in the past, but the
Church’s celebration doesn’t officially end until today’s feast, so it’s an appropriate question.
Were your gatherings festive enough, the presents perfect enough, the Mass moving
enough? Our expectations shape our experiences and how we feel about them. Did this
year’s Christmas live up to yours? Or did it just leave you with more clutter and bills?
In today’s Gospel, St. Luke tells us that those awaiting the Messiah were “filled with expectation.” The Jewish people in Jesus’ day expected a Messiah who would lead the revolt
against the Roman occupying force and overturn the unjust status quo. They expected a
political leader or a revolutionary, yet in today’s first reading Isaiah says that God’s servant
would not be violent – he would bring about justice and freedom through peaceful means.
Jesus did overturn the status quo – not through political or military might, but through
uplifting the poor, touching lepers, and reaching out to sinners and outcasts. He wasn’t like
anything the people expected, yet God praised Him at His baptism: “You are my beloved
Son; with You I am well pleased.”
Questions for Reflection:
As we close the Christmas season and move into Ordinary Time,
what expectations do you have about how Jesus will act in your life?
Have you decided what He should stand for and what He should do for you?
Or can you let Jesus be who He is?
A word from Pope Francis
“Jesus did not need to be baptized, but the first theologians say
that, with His body, with His divinity, in baptism He blessed all
the waters, so that the waters would have the power to confer
baptism. And then, before ascending to Heaven, Jesus told us
to go into all the world to baptize. And from that day forward up
until today, this has been an uninterrupted chain: they baptized
their children, and their children their own, and those children
… And also today this chain continues.

Do You Remember?
This Feast of the Lord's Baptism should be a
good time to reflect on our own baptism. The
day we were baptized as Catholics must be a
very special day worth looking back on. Like the
date, the time, and the church you were baptized. Who was the priest who baptized you?
Wouldn't it be great getting in touch with your
godparents, too? And thank Mom and Dad and
most of all, God, for giving you that precious gift
of Catholic faith.
Don't Cry For Me, OLPH!
That's what our Christmas decorations are
singing to us this week as we put them all away.
Please don't worry. Before you know it, they're
back!
We once again thank all of our friends who
will be helping us take them all down. Thank
you for your generosity of your precious time
and energy. It's not easy!
"Let The Children Come To Me!"
Remember Jesus telling this to his disciples?
That's why bringing your kids to church is a
great idea! Don't worry if they make noise inside
the church. For Jesus, it's music to his ears. For
that reason, we celebrate a vigil mass this
weekend hosted by our 4th graders from our
school and religious education program. We
thank them for serving us. And we pray that
they will always have the heart to serve. Way to
go, kids!
The Power of Prayer
Jesus spent hours praying. And one of His
important prayers was for His disciples to stay
united. "That they may be one.” Let's then keep
praying hard for our parish so that our community will always be one. Pray for each member
of our staff that we will always serve "OLPH
with the Heart." We also pray for each member
of our community. Let's be "prayer warriors" for
each other.
"Merci Beaucoup!"
Our parish secretary, Ms. Maria Ariza, has
said "So long! Farewell!" to us this last month.
We thank her for all those years she served us.
And we pray that God will bless and prosper her
plans this 2016. "Adios, Maria!"

10 TIPS FOR KEEPING RESOLUTIONS
Continue to make resolutions. This reveals our good
intentions and continued hope in improvement.
Make them specific. General resolutions are impossible
to achieve. Pinpoint your goal to a particular action or virtue that can be practiced, measured, and evaluated.
Make it easy. Often we resolve to do the impossible. Simply continue being who you are, emphasizing your gifts,
talents, and strength.
Make do-able resolutions. We can’t do everything, but
we can do something small.
Look at your progress. Every improvement is a giant
step. Virtue and holiness come gradually.
Tell someone your resolution. If it’s public or someone is
holding you accountable, you’re less likely to give up. You
may also find support and encouragement.
If at first you don’t succeed, fail again. Anything worthwhile is going to be difficult. As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “If a
thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly” (What’s Wrong
with the Word, Chapter 14). Some of our greatest saints
failed again and again.
Avoid getting discouraged. Losing heart and hope is the
cause of much of our grief. It is the tool the devil uses most
to tempt us.
Learn from baseball. In the major leagues, a .300 batting
average is top notch. Players congratulate a batter for
“sacrificing “ an out. And tomorrow is a new day and a new
game.
Make it an act of love. If you’re not personally or internally motivated by your resolution, do it for someone else
or Christ Himself. “Offer it up” as a redemptive form of suffering – the best kind there is. It worked for me.
-John McGowan, CSsR, Bringing Home the Word
After nine years of music ministry, I will be
stepping down as cantor for the 8:00 am mass
in order to move onto other ventures. Although
I may be singing as a substitute cantor in the
future, I will miss singing with you every Sunday. I am so grateful to the congregation for allowing me to lead them in song and share my
love of music with them. Being a cantor for
OLPH has been such a special part of my life,
and I cannot thank the congregation enough for
embracing me and singing with me so early
every Sunday morning.
I would like to thank Father Joseph and Amy
Brent for their enthusiasm for music and the
kindness and support they have shown me. I
would like to give a very special thank you to
Theresa Catamisan for being an amazing piano
player and friend. I would also like to extend my
thanks to all the musicians and cantors of
OLPH, I am so grateful to have been a part of
such a talented and generous group of people.
I wish everyone at OLPH the best for the future
and I would like to quote one of my favorite
Psalms to sing: “May the Blessings of God be
yours all the days of your life, May the peace
and the love of God live always in
your heart.” -Psalm 128
Thank you,
Rachael Lorenzetti

HOLY HUMOR
Today’s teens may seem to be always
online, with constant messaging and sharing on
social media with a large audience. The internet
is a great place to meet people, but these meetings come with potential dangers that can put
kids and teens at risk. You don’t know who
you’re really talking to online. Pay attention to
the sites your kids are on computers and mobile
devices. Monitor the sites that they visit and ask
questions about who they talk to and what information they provide to their online friends. For a

MINISTERIO HISPANO
bautismo: "tú eres mi hijo amado; contigo me he complazco."
