PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Exploring the Sunday Readings published by Twenty-third
Publications and wanted to share it with you.
WHAT SHO ULD WE DO ?
“And what is it that we should do?” Luke 3:10-18
The same question is put to John the Baptist three times by the crowds, by tax
collectors and by soldiers: What should we do?
Later in Luke’s Gospel, lawyers and leaders approach Jesus with the same inquiry.
It’s one thing to hear pious teachings wash over us in a religious setting.
It’s another to respond with our lives, to allow a living word to attach itself to
our reality and to make a difference.
Nodding our heads in the pews just makes us members of the band of selfrighteous.
This word is meant to propel us to act.
The answer this question receives is never vague or spiritualized.
Neither John nor Jesus ever say: offer more ritual sacrifices, pray more prayers.
Instead, the response is always to share with those in need, stop cheating the
powerless, stop hungering for more than what we need.
Gospel action is concrete, material, and it costs us something we can feel tangibly.
The moment we realize that the Gospel doesn’t ask us simply to come to church
and refrain from doing obviously bad things, we’ve finally heard it right.
Question for Reflection:
When did you first feel compelled by your faith to do more than go to church?
What does being a Christian mean for you today?

SPECIAL COLLECTION
RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS
DECEMBER 12 AND 13
WHY WE ASK YOU TO HELP
Skyrocketing Costs
 There are more than 33,000 religious past age
70 living in the United States. In 2014, the average annual cost for their care was over $40,000
per person.
 For each of the last six years, the total cost to
support women and men religious has exceeded
$1 billion.
Insufficient Income
 Over the last 30 years, the number of religious
needing care has risen sharply while the number
able to serve in compensated ministry has
steadily declined. In 2014, 66 percent of the religious communities providing data to the National
Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) had a median age of 70 or higher.
 For most of their lives, elder religious worked for
small stipends. There were no 401(k) plans or
pensions.
 Religious communities are financially autonomous and solely responsible for the support and
care of all members. Income, earnings, and expenses are managed separately from the parish
and diocesan structures of the Catholic Church.
 The average annual Social Security benefit for a
religious is $6,048, while the average U.S. beneficiary receives $15,936.
HOW THE RFR MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Generous Donations and Careful Stewardship
 Over the last 25 years, Catholics in the United
States have donated $755 million to the RFR.
 Over 93 percent of donations to the RFR aid
elder religious, with 7 percent used for administration.
Financial and Consultative Support
 Since 1989, nearly $634 million has been distributed to support the day-to-day care of elderly
sisters, brothers, and religious order priests.
 An additional $84 million has been allocated toward self-help projects initiated by religious communities, including collaborative health-care facilities and comprehensive retirement planning.
 In 2009, the National Religious Retirement Office
(NRRO) implemented a new process to help religious communities that are critically underfunded
for retirement address their funding shortfalls.
Since then, the NRRO has helped 104 communities develop long-range retirement strategies.
Data on women and men religious obtained from the NRRO database of
participating religious institutes as of December 31, 2014.

An Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy
Last Tuesday, December 8, we started what Pope
Francis has declared the "Jubilee Year of Divine
Mercy." It is "extraordinary" because a jubilee year is
normally celebrated every 25 years. It goes to show
how much our Holy Father would like us to look to
"The Divine Mercy" and to become bearers of his
Divine Mercy through forgiveness and "corporal
works of mercy" that will bring about peace in this
turbulent world marred by violence, hate, and despair. I strongly encourage each one of us to have a
strong devotion to "The Divine Mercy." Most of all,
to truly take concrete "actions of mercy" in every
possible way we can everyday this Year of Mercy.
"It is better to light a candle than to curse
the darkness." (Chinese proverb)
"A Christmas Miracle Story"
Join us at our Simbang Gabi celebration on Friday,
December 18 at 7 pm hear the story of a miracle of a
desperate couple. I encourage our Filipino Community to unite and serve OLPH on this occasion in
whatever way possible. This is a way of "giving back"
to our beloved community that has helped us in
many ways especially in our faith life.
A special thanks to Chito and Susan Romero
whose leadership has made everything possible.
Muchisimas gracias to Dn. Carlos and Betty Origel for
leading the Hispanic Community in helping to serve
in this event. Thank you very much to Julie Bosdachin
for preparing everything we need for Simbang Gabi!
We owe it to you, JB! A special thanks to our Filipino
friends from the choirs of St. Raymond Church and
Holy Family Church, Artesia. They will bring us beautiful Tagalog church music for the celebration.
"Maraming salamat" (Thank you) Francis Tanglao and
Lulu Macaspac!
"Why Don't You Give Love On Christmas Day!"
Thank you so very much for "giving love" to someone this Christmas through our "Gift Giving Tree"
project. I've even seen a family take home three
cards! That means three children will have Christmas
smiles because of a very generous family that gives
love this holiday season. Thank you so very much for
responding to that call to share. Thank you, Theresa
Nicholas, for organizing this outreach!

Please donate a pair of NEW
socks for the homeless for Christmas.
Every year, the OLPH Skid Row Sandwich

a Christmas lunch for the homeless on Skid Row.
The Sox Box is located inside in the front of

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
GOOD-BYE OLPH
Dear Father Joseph, Staff, Ministers, and
Congregation of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,
After eleven years of music ministry at the
5:00 Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help, it is with full hearts that Theresa and I say
goodbye. We have received and accepted an
offer to become the Music and Liturgy Directors
of a beautiful Catholic Parish in Portland, Oregon. It is an exciting challenge and opportunity
for us, and we are looking forward to this new
adventure in our lives. It is a blessing that this
new parish is close to Mychal's parents and extended family, and they are excited that we will
be moving nearer to them.
We have so many great memories of all the
beautiful Liturgies we have been part of, and all
the wonderful people we have gotten to know
over the years. Thank you for all the encouragement and support you have given us. It means
more than we can say. A special thank you to
Jasmine, Krystal, and James, who have lifted us
up with their great music and singing, and their
tremendous dedication to making the Mass as
beautiful as possible. Also, a very special thank
you to Father Joseph, who has inspired us and
supported us in so many ways! We will miss all
of you very much!
We will be here through the Fourth Sunday
of Advent, at the 5:00 Sunday Mass. Thank you
to all of you who have blessed us over the
years. You are forever in our hearts, and we
love and appreciate you
very much!
Gratefully,
Mychal and Theresa Lotz

LITURGY 101
GAUDETE SUNDAY: REJOICE!
The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday,
the 'pink candle' Sunday, the Sunday we light the
pink candle on the Advent wreath. Gaudete is the
imperative plural form of the Latin verb gaudere (to
rejoice). It is a command ordering us to rejoice! In
these days of penance and preparation leading up to
the feast of our Savior's birth, it reminds us of the joy
that is to come, and serves, amid this season of penance, as a kind of 'break' when we recall the hope we
have because of the coming of Jesus.
In Advent, we not only celebrate the first coming
of our Lord, but eagerly prepare for His Second Coming as well, when the restoration of all things takes
place. Too often many of us shudder at the thought
of our Lord's coming in glory, as if it were a frightening event--and certainly it will be for those who
knowingly rejected Jesus. But for Christians who persevere it will be our great deliverance from the troubles and trials of this world. All the world will bend
the knee - some in terror - but as for God's friends,
they will bend the knee in joyful adoration as Jesus
takes His place as King. The earliest Christians cried
'Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!' expecting Jesus to
come at any moment. So should we - we should long
for His return with our lamps trimmed and our souls
ready. It is indeed something to celebrate--and prepare for. Advent turns our hearts and minds to this
reality.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Help Joseph and Mary
get to the stable.
SAFETY IS KEY EVEN WHEN VISITING
SANTA CLAUS
Visiting Santa Claus can be a grand and positive
childhood experience. However, some people who
seek to bring Santa to life in a child’s world are not
deserving of our trust. Make sure your child knows
that there are special rules for Santa and that parents or guardians must always be with the child
when he or she visits Santa. One rule to consider is
encouraging your child to stand next to Santa or sit
on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on
his lap.

HOLY HUMOR
OUT OF THE LOOP
Mr. Norton was in the hospital
recovering from an operation when
the nurse on duty received a call
from a man who asked how
Mr. Norton was doing.
"Oh, quite well. We expect he'll be released
in the morning."
PAPAL INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER
"Very good, thank you."
General Intention: That all may experience the
mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving.
"May I ask who is calling so that I can tell Mr.
Norton?" inquired the nurse.
Missionary Intention: That families, especially
those who suffer, may find in the birth of Jesus
a sign of certain hope.
"This IS Mr. Norton. The doctors don't tell
me anything!"

MINISTERIO HISPANO
finalmente hemos escuchado bien.
PREGUNTA PARA REFLEXIONAR:
¿Cuando te haz sentido obligado por tu fe a hacer más que solo ir a la iglesia?
¿Qué significa hoy para ti ser un cristiano ?
Oraciones y bendiciones, Padre Joseph

PROTEGIENDO LOS NIÑOS
LA SEGURIDAD ES CLAVE AUN CUANDO SE
VISITE A SANTA CLAUS
