PARISH MINISTRIES
(Juan 6:37-40).
THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE
FAITHFUL DEPARTED
(All Souls’ Day)
LOOKING TO THE LAST DAY
Today the Church remembers all who have walked the
way of Christ and passed from this life. The readings all
look to the last day, when we shall all rise from the dead
and be reunited. The prophet Daniel announces words of
warning and welfare. He cautions us against the judgment to come, but he also comforts us and assures us that
all who live a life of virtue and justice will find life eternal.
The reading from Romans reminds us that, because of
Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection and our entrance into that paschal mystery through baptism, we
now share in the new life won by Christ. This recognition
has repercussions: we need to live righteously now, that
we might rise to live forever with Christ on the last day.
In the Gospel Jesus pledges that all the Father has given
him will not be lost. All the faithful will be raised to joy
and live forever in the presence of God.
For those of Mexican heritage, November 2 means celebration of el Dia de Los Muertos, or “the Day of the
Dead.” One of the most important days of the year for
many, they join All Saints and All Souls together, visiting
the graves of babies and children on All Saints, since they
are santitos (little saints) or angelitos (little angels).
Flowers, their favorite toys, favorite music, and so on, are
taken to them. The following day, people spend time—
some of them all day—at the cemetery with their loved
ones who have died. It is a most solemn but joyful day. It
is a day to celebrate Christ’s victory over death.

SOCIAL JUSTICE/RESTORATIVE JUSTICE - Our traditional Angel Tree will
be located in different areas due to repairs in the church. One area will be near the
reconciliation rooms and the other will be at the west entrance by the new school
window.
For the last 13 years, Presentation parishioners have generously participated in the
Advent Angel Tree project which provides gifts to Stockton children on behalf of
their incarcerated family member as part of the national, ecumenical Prison Ministry program. This year, some 250
children will each receive two gifts - one toy or fun gift, along with one item of clothing - which have been purchased,
wrapped and returned by our caring parishioners.
As we have for the last several years, gifts will also be requested for the children whose families participate in the parish
Food Pantry program.
Please select an Angel tag(s), purchase the gift item listed on the Angel tag and return the gift wrapped item (preferably
not bow or gift bags for ease in packaging for delivery). Place the gifts under the Advent Angel trees located in the
church.
Please return the wrapped gift with the Angel tag included and place under the tree no later than Sunday, Nov. 23. For more information, please contact Rachel Linayao at 472-0707.
We give special thanks to parishioners Susan and Bill Loyko who have organized this project on behalf of Presentation
Church for many years. This year, Bill and Susan are stepping back and turning the reins over to parishioner Rachel
Linayao and their daughter, Jennifer Wood. Jennifer has been a volunteer with the Advent Angel Tree project for the
last 4 years.

DEPRESSION SUPPORT GROUP
Most people feel anxious or depressed at times. Losing a
loved one, getting fired from a job, going through a divorce, and other difficult situations can lead a person to
feel sad, lonely, scared, nervous, or anxious. These feelings are normal reactions to life’s stressors. The holidays
can be especially tough.
Some people experience these feelings daily or nearly
daily for no apparent reason, making it difficult to carry
on with normal, everyday functioning. These people may
have an anxiety disorder, depression, or both.
Presentation Church has a support group where you can
share your experience with others and look for solutions.
If you are interested in coming to one of these meetings,
please contact Kathleen Smith at 209-470-4169.
CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP
This prayer group, led by Deacon Bill Brennan, meets
every Tuesday from 7:30pm to 9:00pm in Guadalupe
Hall. All are invited to attend.

MONSIGNOR’S CORNER
Seven Deadly Sins (and some new ones) - Karl Menninger, M.D.
The Sin of Waste
Great affluence largely helps determine the present ecological threat of extinction to this planet. Over consumption encourages the dissipation of greater and greater quantities of energy, water, soil, oil, etc. We also waste human lives recklessly in ghettos and slums and in the great iron cages of idleness—the latter at public expense.
The vulgarity of greediness (residual infantile behavior) is precisely what education in self-control and social concern is
supposed to avert.
