Bulletin - Cathedral of Christ the King

March 1, 2015
Second Sunday of lent
My friends in Christ,
As we begin the second week of Lent, it is best viewed as a journey, a journey
from ‘No’ to ‘Yes’, from dead ashes to living waters.
On Easter Sunday we will be challenged to start all over again as we are asked:
2699 Peachtree Road, NE
Atlanta, Georgia 30305
404-233-2145
www.cathedralofchristtheking.org
WHAT’S INSIDE:
Do you renounce Satan
And all his works
And all his ways.
Do you believe in God the Father
In Jesus Christ
In the Holy Spirit.
We have the Lenten season to work on our answer to Yes. In order to get there, I
give you my six suggestions for Lent.
1. Say no to indiscriminate television watching. For Lent, limit yourself and
family.
2. If you say no to TV, say yes to spiritual reading. Read the Bible, start with the
Gospels. Read a spiritual book, Catholic magazines, listen to spiritual CDs. Say the
Rosary on the way to work; Pray the Stations of the Cross once a week.

or for more information on future classes, contact Ann Hall at 404-915-1685

Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
Today’s First and Second Readings are linked by a common theme: sacrifice. Abraham is
willing to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. To encourage the Christian community in Rome, St.
Paul reminds them that God did not spare His only Son, sacrificing Him for the good of all.
In St. Mark’s Gospel account of the Transfiguration, God clearly identifies Jesus as His Son,
and Jesus alludes to His death and resurrection. Our own sacrifice of the “first fruits” of our
time, talent, and treasure to God through the Church and greater community are solid acts of
Christian stewardship, bringing great peace and joy to those who embrace it as a way of life.

3. Rice Bowl boxes are at the
Gathering Space. Put one in your
home on the family table. Every day
empty out your change into it. All the
money goes to the poor. Then bring it
back at the end of Lent and the
money goes to Catholic Relief
Services.
4. Be a stitcher, an encourager that is,
at home, work, school – give the
encouraging word, the encouraging
deed. Be a repairer of broken spirits, a
healer of wounds, a sign of hope.
Speak the encouraging word for every
put-down remark.
5. This may be a hard one. Prepare to
heal, to work up to it. That is, make
an attempt at reconnecting a broken
connection that often, in my
experience, starts out with a
misunderstanding.
6.Reconnect. Put aside time for
family, spouse, friends. Review the
reason you are doing all the work that
you are doing. Review life, your life.
All six are ways of getting from Ash
Wednesday ‘no’ to the Easter ‘Yes’.
Have a great Lent.
God Bless You,
Msgr. Frank McNamee

LIFE TEEN: MISSION NIGHT—SEALED/SENT
Back in the day, a bishop would give a light slap on the face to anyone getting
confirmed. It was a way to tell them to wake up and be alert, because your
mission starts now. Are you ready for this mission? Do you even know what
you’re getting into with your Confirmation? Come find out this Sunday at Life
Teen. This Mission Night is mandatory for all Confirmation 2 (10th-12th grade)
candidates, as well as non-Catholic school Confirmation 1 (9th grade) candidates,
but all High Schoolers are welcome to join! UPPERCLASSMEN: This Sunday is
your chance to step up in leadership! Come help us lead small groups for the
underclassmen Confirmation candidates!
EDGE: Best Selling Book of all Time
All 7th and 8th grade teens are invited to join us this Sunday in the Hyland Center
as we wrap up our series on Scripture? Did you know that the Bible is the
bestselling book of all time? Or that it’s the most stolen book of all time? What is
the power of scripture and how can you unleash it in your life? Come out to
tonight’s EDGE Night for those answers as well as food, friends, and faith
building from 5-6:30 pm in the Hyland Center.
HS MEN’S AND WOMEN’S DISCIPLESHIP
High Schoolers, come join us in the youth room this Monday from 7-8:30 pm for
this small group experience where we aim to challenge ourselves and one another
in our growing relationship with Christ. Want more info? Head to

Buddy Bench
“Buddy Benches,” a place to rest, as well
as a place for students to discuss better
playground choices, are appearing at
schools across the country. The CKS
Middle School Student Council decided
it would be a great idea for our playground. So with the help of Fr. John
Kieran, they designed a bench. The
students told Fr. John that they wanted it to be more than just a “Buddy
Bench”. They wanted it to remind everyone that we are called to be more than
buddies; we are called to love. Fr. John carved the quote, “Love one another” into
the bench and added lion paws to make it a true CKS bench.
Katherine Johansen Davis Scholarship
An ever faithful servant of the Lord,
Katherine Johansen Davis spent the last
six decades of her life volunteering her
time at both the Cathedral and Christ
the King School. When she passed away
in 2010, her family asked that memorial
gifts be sent to CKS in order to establish
the Katherine Johansen Davis
Scholarship. This year, the scholarship
was awarded to CKS 5th grader Sara
Grace Hobbs, a student “who uses his
or her talents and gifts to make Christ the King School more Christ-like.”
Operation Rice Bowl
Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Operation Rice Bowl is a Lenten faith formation
program that helps us to live in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable around
the world. We pray to reflect on what type of person we are called to be.
We fast to remove the things that get between us and God, and to remember
those without enough to eat. We give to honor Jesus’ call to serve those in need.
Please return your Rice Bowls on Palm Sunday at the parish reception desk.

 Digan no a ver mucha televisión.
recolecta irá a Catholic Relief Services.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
