St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church
Serving the Community for 130 Years
February 22, 2015—1st Sunday of Lent
251 Franklin St., Hightstown, NJ 08520
Father, help me to see this holy season of
Lent as a time of spiritual renewal, rather
than a time of deprivation.
Motivate me to reach a new level of
experiencing your grace.
The first Sunday of Lent begins at the
beginning: Creation and the Garden of
Eden. The story of the temptation and
fall are a reminder of our sinfulness
and our need for salvation.

1st Sunday of Lent
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Have you ever felt tested by God? I daresay
most of us will offer an unqualified “yes” to
that. It’s a consistent pattern in most lives of
faith, as witnessed best of all by the saints of
our Church. You and I may not have to endure the multiple troubles of Job, but we all
have our moments of misery before mercy,
and our consequent doubts about God’s personal love for us. We hear that pain in the
many voices around us from people all the
time. “My child died in a school shooting and you have
the nerve to ask me to trust God?” Or, “my spouse died
of cancer despite my prayers, and I just cannot forgive
God for taking her so young.” Or, “my cousin was
abused by a priest, so I don’t go to Mass any more.”
The list could go on.
St. Mark, acting as God’s messenger today asks us to
note by way of Jesus’ experience of testing before He
began His mission, He of Holiness and Truth personified, that God allows even His lesser friends like us to
be tested. From these tests we learn just how genuine
our Faith is, and how deep our love for God is. None of
us should be caught off guard by the twists and turns
of life here on earth, which the saints tell us, after all, is
a testing ground. Those tests prepare us for our unique
mission, which the priest will spell out for us at the end
of Mass whenever he says: “Go in peace, glorifying the
Lord by your life.”

CHILDREN’S EASTER CHOIR
HEY KIDS! JOIN ST. ANTHONY’S EASTER CHOIR!
The Easter Choir is now practicing for the 10:30 AM
Mass on Easter Sunday, April 5th. Kids in GRADES 4
AND ABOVE are invited to sing. Choir practice is on
Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the

in the church hall
Sunday February 22, 2015 - 8:30am to 12:30pm
Pancakes, Sausage, Juice, Coffee, Tea
12 and over $3.00 11 and under Free
First Reading: Genesis 9:8-15
Yahweh makes a covenant with Noah to never again
destroy the world by the waters of a flood. The rainbow
will be its sign, and that will signal the end of lesser
storms in the future.
Second Reading: I Peter 3:18-22
The author shows that just as Noah was delivered from
the evils of his time by the flood waters, so are Christians rescued from evil by the waters of baptism.
Gospel: Mark 1:12-15
After his baptism, Jesus is tested by Satan in the
“wilderness.” This prologue of Mark’s gospel then ends
with a summary of Jesus’ preaching about the kingdom
of God, and the need we have to repent and believe in
the good news.

“Love, to be real, must cost, it must hurt, it must empty us
of self.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
In today’s Gospel, (Mark 1:12-15), we have a shortened
version of Jesus’ temptation in the desert for 40 days. 40
days in the desert, is a significant number as it appears in
the Old Testament as well. The Israelites wandered in the
desert for 40 years while God tested them in the desert.
John the Baptist’s arrest coincides with the beginning of
Jesus’ public ministry. The Kingdom of God is truly at hand
as Jesus, from the line of David, brings the Kingdom that
will never end.
A representative from Villa Victoria Academy will be available after 9 & 10:30 Masses on Sunday, March 1 to
answer questions and share information about the
school. Villa Victoria offers young women in grades
Pre-K through 12 a college-preparatory education,
small class sizes, and faith-centered curriculum.
VVA is registering now for fall 2015—financial Aid
is available. Please stop by to learn more and pick up literature about the program. Call 609 882-1700 for more information.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Friday, March 6, there will be Eucharistic Adoration in the
chapel after the 9:00am mass from 9:30am to 7:00pm.
What is Eucharistic Adoration? The Eucharist is: Jesus truly
present - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity!
Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or
honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a
deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the
Mystery of Christ truly present before us".
During Eucharistic Adoration, we "watch and
wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and open
ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist ... By worshiping the Eucharistic Jesus, we become
what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, The Lord
draws us to Himself and gently transforms us. In its
fullest essence ... Eucharistic Adoration is "God and Man
reaching out for each other, at the same time!" (catholicchurch.org)
Come adore, praise, thank God for his love and mercy.
Bring your petitions to Him and ask for His graces to do His
will. Call Barbara McGeachen at 609-448-8399 to sign-up
for Adoration.

Social Justice Corner - February 22, 2015
Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the
Spirit. 1 Peter 3:19
These words are not only a description of Jesus' death
and resurrection, they are a promise to all of us, especially those who give their lives for others.
Recently, Pope Francis declared Archbishop Oscar
Romero a martyr. This declaration opens the way for
Romero to be beatified, a step on the way to canonization. Romero died at the hands of members of the Salvadoran military, two of whom had been trained at the US
School of the Americas. Those who assassinated Archbishop Romero still have not been brought to justice.
Petitions to close the school that trained them have been
ignored.
Archbishop Romero's words still ring true today as repression continues in Honduras, Mexico and other
countries.
“Brothers, you came from our own people. You are
killing your own brothers. Any human order to kill
must subordinate to the law of God, which says, 'Thou
shalt not kill'. No soldier is obliged to obey an order
contrary to the law of God. No one has to obey an immoral law. It is high time you obeyed your consciences
rather than sinful orders. The church cannot remain
silent before such an abomination...in the name of God,
in the name of this suffering people whose cry rises to
heaven more loudly each day, I implore you, I beg you, I
order you: stop the repression.” Archbishop Oscar
Romero
Oscar Romero was shot to death by members of the Salvadoran military as he celebrated Mass in San Salvador,
on March 24, 1980.

How to Get Motivated During a Depressive Episode
Getting motivated when you’re going through a depressive episode can be challenging, but there are
guidelines you can follow to help transition out
of your depression. Here are some suggestions
that may help:
Get out of bed. Just getting out of bed is a good
first step. When the depressive episode is really
bad, sometimes motivation starts with recognizing even the smallest steps as mini victories.
Simply get up, take a shower, get dressed, and
view it as a positive first step toward your goal.
Get some exercise. Exercise is a proven mood booster, so
once you get up and get out of bed, take the next step
and make yourself exercise to further break out of that
“no-motivation” mindset.
Break tasks and goals into small steps. Sometimes breaking down what you want to accomplish into smaller,
more achievable goals will give you the motivation you
need. way, you feel like you are accomplishing something.
Rely on your family. Most people with depression know
their families love them and care for them, but during a
depressive episode, it’s easy to lose sight of that fact. If
you feel the urge to withdraw, resist it and reach out to
your family for help. A strong family unit is essential
when it comes to dealing with a depressed person.
Build on any positive developments. Finding motivation
during a depressive episode is undoubtedly tricky, but
one strategy is to remain as optimistic and positive as
possible. Look for subtle signs, such as colors looking
brighter or music sounding better to you. Then, push
yourself further in that positive direction, and encourage
friends and family members to help push you too.
Depression is a serious illness, and focusing on a goal, a
hobby, or even a strong family unit to get you through it
may not be enough. Treatment of depressive episodes
frequently require medication and counseling from qualified mental health experts to help you rekindle the motivation you need to get back to a better quality of life.

CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF
CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS
Confirmation is one of three Sacraments of Initiation. It completes the Sacrament of Baptism. It
seals us with the gift of the same Holy Spirit that
Jesus sent upon his disciples at Pentecost.

all three Sacraments of Initiation that is Baptism, First
Holy Communion and Confirmation. The Parish is inviting all adults who have missed receiving Confirmation and have the desire to complete their initiation into
the Church to please call Rosemarie Constable at 609448-0974. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Pentecost - Sunday May 24th.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 7 more payments to make totaling $59,128.02
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

I DOMINGO DE CUARESMA (Marcos 1:12-15)
