The entire history of the Jewish
people is directed toward one goal:
that God might be glorified through
the chosen people. Christians, too,
are called to “do everything for the
glory of God.” In today’s scriptures Paul reminds us
that the best way for us to glorify God is to seek to
benefit “the many,” as Christ did when he shed his
blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one way the
Jews sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and
leprosy away from the chosen people. Jesus finds a
better way. He cures the leper, who immediately
re-enters the community to spread the good news about
Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both
Jesus and the leper fulfill their calling to glorify the
God who fills us “with the joy of salvation.”
Ashes will be distributed during all
of the Masses on Wednesday,
February 18, 2015 in the Upper
Church. The Masses will be held at
7:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and
7:00 p.m. (OLPH Novena: Prayers in
private.)
Confessions will be held at 11:45
a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Stations of the Cross: During Lent, we invite you to join
us each day at 11:55 a.m. in the Shrine as we pray the
Stations of the Cross.
FAST & ABSTINENCE
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
website states: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are
obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In
addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of
abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the
norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59.
When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal.
Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full
meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are
binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from
age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is
continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as
the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the
Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and
to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT
On February 25, 2015, there will be a Confirmation Retreat
for both St. Peter the Apostle School and the Religious
Education Children. There retreat will be held from 9 a.m.
to 12 noon. Mass will follow at 12:15 p.m. We will also
provide lunch.
CONFIRMATION PRACTICE
There will be a Confirmation Practice for both children and
their sponsors on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.
Sponsors and children must attend.
~Reflection~
Being a disciple of Christ means being an imitator of Christ. When we hear a Gospel passage such as today’s, we may
think that we could never come close to imitating Christ. After all, he had such miraculous power. The story of the
cleansing and curing of the leper may have something deeper to teach us. In the Lord’s time, people were simply not to
go near a leper. To touch a leper was unthinkable. It rendered the person ritually impure and susceptible to contagion.
Just listen to today’s first reading to find out how lepers were to be treated. Jesus goes beyond the usual boundaries
and, moved with pity, heals the man. We are called to be like Christ—to move beyond those boundaries that prevent
healing and reconciliation from occurring. Some of these boundaries we set up ourselves. As the cleansing word of God
is proclaimed today, let us pray that God will help us to reach across established boundaries to embrace and be
reconciled with those whom today’s world sees as “unclean.”

La historia completa del
pueblo judío va dirigida hacia
una meta: que Dios sea
glorificado por medio del pueblo
escogido. Los cristianos también
están llamados a “hacer todo
para la gloria de Dios”. En las Escrituras de hoy Pablo
nos recuerda que la mejor manera que tenemos para
glorificar a Dios es buscar el beneficio de “todos” tal
como Cristo hizo cuando derramó su sangre por toda la
humanidad.
La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en que
los judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos,
manteniendo a los leprosos y la lepra alejados del
pueblo escogido. Jesús encuentra una manera mejor:
cura al leproso, que inmediatamente retorna a la
comunidad para difundir la Buena Nueva de Jesús a
todo el que le escuche. De este modo tanto Jesús como
el leproso cumplen con su llamado de glorificar al Dios
que nos llena “con la alegría de la salvación”.

Santo son días obligatorios de
ayuno y abstinencia para los
católicos. Además, los Viernes

católica Latina, las normas sobre
el ayuno es obligatorio desde los 18 años hasta los 59 años.
Cuando una persona ayuna, se le permite comer una comida
completa. Dos comidas más pequeñas también se pueden
tomar, pero no equivalen a una comida completa. Las
normas relativas a la abstinencia de carne son obligatorias
para los miembros de la Iglesia católica latina desde los 14
años de edad en adelante. Si es posible, el ayuno del Viernes

Ser discípulo de Cristo significa ser imitador de Cristo. Cuando escuchamos un pasaje del Evangelio como el de hoy
pudiéramos pensar que nunca podremos ni siquiera acercarnos a imitar a Cristo. Después de todo, él tenía un tremendo
poder milagroso. La historia del leproso que fue limpio y curado pudiera tener algo más profundo que enseñarnos. En
los tiempos del Señor la gente no se acercaba a un leproso. Tocar a un leproso era inconcebible, pues esa persona se
convertía en alguien ritualmente impuro y susceptible al contagio. Sólo con escuchar la primera lectura de hoy sabrás
cómo eran tratados los leprosos. Jesús va más allá de los límites de siempre y, movido por la compasión, cura al
hombre. Estamos llamados a ser como Cristo, de ir más allá de esos límites que impiden que una curación y una
reconciliación sucedan. Nosotros mismos imponemos algunos de esos límites. Al escuchar la palabra de Dios
proclamada hoy oremos para que Dios nos ayude a cruzar los límites establecidos de manera que podamos aceptar y
reconciliarnos con todas aquellas personas que el mundo de hoy ve como “impuros”.
