28. ONCOLOGY
We have a team of 2 medical oncologists, 2 nurses, 1 nursing assistant and 2
administrative staff who provide comprehensive cancer services.
Medical screening and other procedures can help to detect cancer at an early stage.
One of the most important of these procedures is PET, an essential diagnostic tool
which helps provide a complete picture about cancer growth and spread. The Rotger
Clinic offers PET scanning, which quickly shows how far the disease has spread and can
be used to determine the appropriate treatment for each patient.
We also have a Day Hospital, staffed by highly-qualified professionals, which provides
specialist outpatient treatment for cancer and haematological patients. One of its
prime objectives is to deliver comprehensive medical care to all patients quickly and
efficiently. We have doctors on duty and a telephone helpline for minor emergencies.
At the Day Hospital cancer patients are given the chemotherapy preparation and
treatment they need, and it also provides other treatments such as hormone therapy
or specific treatments for haematological, diseases, rheumatic diseases, etc., which
need to be administered by specialised trained professionals. The staff are also trained
in the care and management of venous access, such as the port-A catheter.
Our nursing staff make sure that patients and their families have all the information
they need about their treatment during their stay in the Day Hospital, and explain the
care plan they need to follow. They also keep in close contact with family members at
home.
We have a Multidisciplinary Cancer Team, made up of oncologists, radiologists,
surgeons, pathologists, nuclear medical doctors etc., who meet to discuss each case
and reach a unanimous agreement on the best way to treat each patient.
The Cancer Department at the Rotger Clinic works in close collaboration with the
Genetics Unit, the hematologic analysis laboratory, and specialist radiologists to
ensure that each patient receives the best available treatment. It also coordinates with
the Radiotherapy Department at the Miramar Polyclinic, specialists in palliative care
medicine, home care services, and the General and Joan March Hospitals to ensure
that all cancer patients and their families receive comprehensive care and assistance.
The Clinic participates in clinical trials, and its interventional radiology and anaesthesia
services collaborate to implement innovative techniques such as hepatic
chemosaturation therapy – it is the only centre in Spain in to provide this therapy. It
has also successfully performed 3 innovative treatments for patients who had a
HEALTH SERVICES CATALOGUE
metastatic cancer that did not respond to conventional treatments: Yttrium spheres;
hepatic chemoembolization; and radiofrequency to treat metastases.
We also have a peritoneal carcinomatosis programme which offers specialist surgery
(Dr Morales) and includes the administration of intraperitoneal chemotherapy with
thermal perfusion.
