TEACHING
Relevant teaching topics
Undergraduate degree in Mechanics and Master's in Engineering Sciences (SdI).
Teaching objectives and supervisory requirements
The recruited research professor will teach Sdl master’s students and undergraduates studying mechanics at the Jussieu and
Saint-Cyr campuses. He or she will be particularly involved in the units teaching the mechanics of solids, vibration and waves,
modeling and computer simulation. He or she will help implement practical experiments based on the Saint-Cyr platform, will
help teach mechanics to first-year undergraduates and will oversee first-year student research projects. The successful
applicant will also be asked to dedicate a significant amount of time to career guidance and workforce readiness (ARE) courses
and initiatives for first-year undergraduate students and master’s students. Finally, he or she will undertake administrative
responsibilities for the master’s and undergraduate programs.
RESEARCH
The creation of LIB, resulting from the merging of two laboratories (LIP and LIF) has enabled us to unite, within a single
laboratory, teams that work on a variety of biomedical imaging topics, including methodological and instrumental developments
principally in ultrasound, MRI and PET. The goal is to establish new imaging biomarkers, with a focus on aging and the
significant pathologies associated with aging (bone, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative) as well as cancer. These studies
are structured around large national or international projects. This position was created as part of UPMC’s effort to provide
structure for the discipline. The LIB is an important member the University Institute for Health Engineering (IUIS), which is
supported by Sorbonne University cluster.
The LIB is as leader in academic research and biomedical imaging. Team 1 (Determinant of Bone Mechanical Status), which
this position is a part of, studies a large number of topics and has many fruitful partnerships with academic (national and
international), clinical and industrial organizations. Our research is experimental (strong expertise in ultrasound spectroscopy,
acoustic microscopy, non-linear acoustics, guided waves and instrumentation) and computer science-based (multi-level
mechanical modeling and ultrasound wave propagation in complex heterogeneous environments).
The recruited professor will join our team with the intention of taking a leadership role. He or she will direct the team’s research
efforts using a variety of methodological approaches to 1/ address the mechanical properties of bone in relation to multi-level
structural and functional aspects of bones, 2/ develop new approaches for diagnosing bone fragility, 3/ explore new topics
(stability of bone and joint prostheses, bone consolidation) in collaboration with the orthopedic surgery department at the Pitié
Salpêtrière Hospital and 4/ ensure transfer to the clinical and industrial sectors. The overall goal is to preserve and develop
the current status of the team as international leaders in their field. The team is currently comprised of an Associate Professor
(Quentin Grimal) and a CNRS research director (Pascal Laugier) as well as 4 CNRS researchers (J-G Minonzio, G. Renaud,
A. Saïed, M. Talmant), 4 doctoral students and 3 post-doctoral fellows.
Using ultrasound technology to characterize the elastic properties of bone and predict the in vivo risk of fracture has been
a topic of significant scientific interest for the past 25 years. This is due in part to the safety of ultrasound approaches compared
to the more often destructive character of mechanical or ionizing X-ray tests (for in vivo applications). In addition, ultrasound
technologies are versatile and lend themselves well to exploring the anisotropic structure of bones at multiple levels (from
the organ level to the microscopic level). Recent discoveries have resulted in significant advances in the direction of the field,
such as quantitative scanning acoustic microscopy, ultrasound spectroscopy, non-linear acoustic methods and guided waves.
Established research collaborations have facilitated the use of imaging techniques for spongy bone to diagnose osteoporosis.
Our team collaborates with researchers around the world to explore new possibilities in ultrasound technology and to better
understand the mechanisms of bone/ultrasound interactions, which are still largely unclear.
The principle characteristic of ultrasound is its capacity to provide information regarding the characteristics of bone (elastic
properties, microstructure) that are currently inaccessible to clinicians and that are crucial for improving the prediction of fracture
risk and to improve patient management. The incidence of osteoporosis, which is linked to the general aging of the population,
is increasing dramatically, and represents a considerable cost to the health system. The goal of our research is to develop X-ray
or alternative ultrasound technologies to overcome current deficiencies in preventing osteoporotic fractures. This scientific field
brings together mechanical engineers, acousticians, doctors and biologists working on clinical aspects and basic research
questions, uniting complementary strategies.
