My research on the Internet reveals that it is merely a myth that is unsubstantiated, not validated, and has no medical support. It is believed and kept alive simply because popular media keeps repeating it over and over. As my mind tends to take things to the next level, I began to wonder just how much of our heart do we really use when dealing with others. Is that the same 10% as well? How closely related is evangelism and giving your heart to others? And does evangelism require us to have a “heart for evangelism?” Ruth was a prime example of one who showed love and used more than 10% of her heart. Ruth stuck with Naomi through the hard times. She adjusted her lifestyle to match that of her mother-in-law’s lifestyle. She reached beyond her own comfort zone and offered comfortable, encouraging words at the same time. And she put Naomi’s needs above her own. "(Love) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NKJV). So are we required to love someone before we can evangelize to them. Then it occurred to me that God did and still does all of these things for us – his children. Would we dare say that he is only giving His children 10% of his heart? Michelle Dinkins Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 Chief Executive Officer Pastor Michael S. Thank You so much for what You have shown us; what You have taught us, Father; what You have reminded us of. Father, we choose Your will over our own. God, we thank You for coming after us; for pursuing us; inviting us into a love relationship, Father God. And then inviting us to join You in Your work, Father. What a privilege that is. Father God, whatever adjustments we should make in our attitudes; in our beliefs; in our convictions; in our behavior; in our relationship; God, we join You in Your work, Father. God, we commit to making those adjustments, Father. Lord, we wanna speak Your love language. We wanna obey You in everything You tell us to do. God, I pray that You would show us, as a church, where You are at work. Reveal that to us, Father, and we will get busy where You send us, where You direct us. God, we pray that as we leave this place, if we need to make a fresh surrender, if we need to get saved, whatever we need to do, God, we want to be disciples. We love You, we honor You, we adore You. It is in Jesus name we pray. Amen Prayers A Prayer For the Church Leaders Father God, we love You, and honor You, and adore You. Thank You so much for thinking so much of us to call us out of the darkness and into Your marvelous light, and then to call us into service, Father God. We know that being a leader is a huge responsibility. That You would call us to set an example for other people in every area of our lives. And we pray, God, that we can live up to that expectation on us. We know that we fall short at times, Father God. And we’re not perfect people. So we pray for Your mercy to cover those gaps in our hearts, in our character, and our leadership, God. I pray for each and every family represented in this circle that during this season, You would take care of each family, Lord God, and that You will allow every house to be full of Your love and joy and grace. And that everybody would know You as their Lord and Savior. We know that even though this is supposed to be a joyous time for a lot of people, it can be depressing. And we pray that You would give them joy and fill them up. And we pray that as we wind down 2014, that God we look to 2015 with faith. And that we would walk in faith and walk by the truth of Your Word because we know that you’ve got greater in store for us, Father. It is in Jesus name we pray. Amen. The unstoppable cold, brisk, icy season of Winter is upon us. And neither IPL nor Citizens Gas is going to provide users with coupons or discounted services. Preparing for the Winter weather by finding ways to cut back on your energy bill can help bill payers keep dollars in their pockets as opposed to watching them evaporate into an unknown Aside from making upgrades to your windows, doors, place. Some ideas include: and thermostat, there are other ways of saving money. Turning off the space heater, which can cost up to 20 cents an hour when no one is in in the room. Applying weather stripping around doors & window, can save a bundle over the months. Setting the thermostat between 68 – 70 degrees and putting on an extra sweater or sweatshirt is yet another way to save cash in the winter. Turning off power strips when you aren’t using them. Purchasing rechargeable batteries as opposed to disposable ones. Opening curtains or blinds during the day to allow sunlight to naturally warm rooms in the house. Using a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature when you are not at home can reduce your heating bill by 5 to 15 percent yearly. Weatherizing the home by covering drafty windows with clear plastic sheets making sure the plastic is sealed tightly to reduce infiltration can improve energy efficiency. Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 7 Sending Out Workers Larry Smith, Pastor of Christian Education SOW Institute has gotten off to a fantastic start! During the past couple months, Senior Pastor Michael S. Johnson has been leading “Sharing Your Faith with Confidence” (i.e., evangelism class) during Wednesday’s noon and evening Bible Study sessions. He is laying out a comprehensive, step-by-step plan to help members become comfortable with evangelism – even those who might be shy or who feel that they don’t have enough biblical knowledge. Jesus commanded us in Matthew 28:18-20 records Jesus’ “Great Commission”, which is His call for Christians to share their faith with non-believers. This course is designed to allow us not only to follow Jesus’ command, but to do so in an effective way. Pastor Johnson is also leading his “Teaching Basics” course on Sunday mornings at 9:20. This is an introductory course that is designed to nurture, train, and unleash the teacher in all of us! Many of us have the gift of teaching, but we still need to be “sharpened” for service. This course explores various teaching methods, as well as learning styles. It’s no surprise that people don’t learn in exactly the same way. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of – and to adapt to – the various styles that you will encounter as a teacher. Beginning in August, Associate Pastor Larry Smith led a six-week course entitled “I’m Saved and Sanctified”, which explores the nature, the necessity, and the process of salvation. There are many misconceptions about exactly what “being saved” means. Sadly, this means that many people don’t know that they actually are saved. Even worse, many people believe that they are saved, but they are not! This course helps to clarify this basic tenet of our faith. Currently, Pastor Smith is leading a six-week course entitled “I Feel the Spirit”. As with salvation, there is a great deal of misunderstanding about the Holy Spirit. Is He real? Is He someone to fear? Why do we call the Holy Spirit “He”? These questions and many others, are answered in this course! Both of Pastor Smith’s courses have taken place on Sunday morning; however, he understands that not everyone is able to attend class at that time. Therefore, he conducted a series of make-up sessions for “I’m Saved and Sanctified” on the following Saturdays in November: 1st, 15th, and 22nd from 9:00—11:00 a..m. at the church. As SOW continues to expand its offerings, we are actively looking for eager students of the Word who wish to share the ministry of teaching that God has placed on their hearts. The only prerequisite is that interested members have a willing heart and a sincere desire to learn. The feedback from members who have gone through training thus far has been very positive. Finally, as a reminder, all SOW courses are required for members who desire to be in a teaching ministry at Mt. Pleasant. JESUS is everywhere. JESUS rides on the wind and walks on Santa comes but once a year ... JESUS is an ever present help. Santa fills your stockings with goodies ... needs. JESUS supplies all your Santa comes down your chimney uninvited ... JESUS stands at your door and knocks, and then enters your heart when invited. You have to wait in line to see Santa ... mention of His name. Santa lets you sit on his lap ... JESUS is as close as the JESUS lets you rest in His arms. Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi little boy or girl, what's your name?" ... JESUS knew our name before we were born... Not only does He know our name, He knows our address too. He knows our history and future and He even knows how many hairs are on our heads. Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly ... of love. All Santa can offer is HO HO HO ... hope. Santa says "You better not cry" ... on me, for I care for you." JESUS has a heart full JESUS offers health, help, and JESUS says "Cast all your cares Santa's little helpers make toys ... JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts, repairs broken homes and builds mansions. Santa may make you chuckle but ... your strength. JESUS gives you joy that is While Santa puts gifts under your tree ... and died on a tree – the cross. JESUS became our gift It’s obvious there is really no comparison. We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about. We need to put Christ back in CHRISTmas. Jesus is still the reason for the season. Yes, Jesus is better, he is even better than Santa Claus To kick off the Christmas Spirit, Mount Pleasant’s Youth Department continued a 3-year tradition of Christmas caroling at Pyramid Point, Spring Mill Meadows, and Bloom at Eagle Creek nursing home - chosen because they house our members or we do outreach at them. With the adult assistance of Dei Langford, Adriena Rogers, Robbia Keglar, Minister Terry Frierson, and LaShonda Chapman, approximately 10 youth witnessed to the seniors in the Christmas Spirit, reminding them that Jesus is the reason for the season. It was a fun-filled day with the seniors joining us in song, clapping, and dancing. What a Joyous Occasion. Along with singing, the poem “Who is better, Santa or Jesus” was read. The celebration at each nursing home was ended with the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. -- Author Unknown Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 9 Hidden Bible Names: SEE HOW MANY BOOKS OF THE BIBLE YOU CAN FIND HIDDEN IN THE PARAGRAPH BELOW. THE NAMES ARE HIDDEN WITHIN AND AMONGST THE WORDS; FOR EXAMPLE: YOU COULD FIND THE WORD AMP WITHIN THE WORD EXAMPLE. THERE ARE 16 NAMES; CAN YOU FIND THEM ALL? NEED SOME HELP? BELOW THE PARAGRAPH, THE 16 NAMES ARE LISTED ALPHABETICALLY. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FIND THE 16 NAMES, TRY LOOKING AT THE LIST AND FINDING THEM FROM THERE - BUT ONLY USE THE LIST AS A LAST RESORT. I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts... and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized. The truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others will require judges to help them. I will quickly admit, it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now for there really are sixteen names of books of the Bible in this paragraph. If I chose another sentence or two, maybe you could post them at the water cooler. Much love from your Mount Pleasant Church family. Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 11 Do not let your worries get the best of you; remember, Moses started out as a basket case. Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews. Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors. It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one. The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close. People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church. Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever. If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has. We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges. Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He will clean them. God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!" If God is your co-pilot - swap seats! Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 12 Athletes Are Not Special So cial Politi cal Dr. Keglar responds to recent problems in the NFL with Ray Rice (Ravens), Hardy (Panthers) and players of San Francisco and Vikings. News was focused on this 24-7 for over two weeks, yet, murder cases like Ferguson, Missouri and New York have been pushed to the back. Shelvy Haywood Keglar, Ph.D. The outrage over recent despicable incidents involving professional athletes, mainly football, cannot be minimized by any stretch of the imagination. Battery is a crime. It does not matter if the victim is a spouse, girlfriend, stranger or co-worker. However, the constant exposure in the media supports the notion that athletes are special and deserve to be adjudicated differently than other citizens. The handling of these cases gives credence to the notion that gifted athletes are treated differently than other citizens from elementary school to the professional level and into retirement. In what other occupation does a worker lose their job with the commission of a legal infraction? Does it happen to the foreman in construction, factory, trades or any industry? What about the professional area of accounting, engineering, medicine, research or teaching? It usually does not happen before the legal process has been finalized. Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 If we want to change the selfaggrandizement of athletes, we need to start treating them as regular people in junior high and middle school where they first experience the separation from their peers because of athletics. We can start by treating athletes the same as other students when discipline and academics are involved. Perhaps, we need to stop the barrage of coverage that implies you are special and treat the incidents as we would with any other battery charge. Let the criminal justice process promulgate the course of action and a different message will be received by the current and future perpetrators. Athletes are not special! They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like other citizens. The committee is moving forward and are in the final stages of providing our recommendations to Pastor Johnson to include a comprehensive plan that looks at ways to spiritually engage our youth, both churched and unchurched. This plan will include age groups from ages 3 through 18 in addition to our young adults from ages 19 through 32. We hope to complete this process shortly after the holiday season. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned, and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. * FOURTH PLACE * Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, AK, garnered 4th Place in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun. *THIRD PLACE * Amber Carson of Lancaster, PA, * SECOND PLACE * Kara Walton, of Claymont, DE, sued the because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. drink and broke her tailbone. First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, OK, who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home. Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 18 Pastor Johnson and my church family, I wish all of you many blessings in the coming New Year of 2015. It is with a sad heart that I announce my move to Virginia to care for my parents at the end of January. I have very fond memories of my fellowship with you since 1996. My family and I came to Indiana not having any family here. God directed us to Mount Pleasant through my husband’s co-worker. We have been shown much friendship and love, and it has been a pleasure to be a member of several ministries in the church: The voices of Faith Choir, Sisterhood, Sunday School Department, and the Associate Ministers. But my most memorable moment is being nominated to serve on the Pastor’s Search Committee. We were very saddened when God called Pastor Sellars to glory. But we were given the task to find our next Pastor. It was a tedious process and required much commitment of time by all participants. But, in the end, I feel we were blessed to have Pastor Johnson as the shepherd of this house. I employ you all to continue to show your love and support to him and First Lady, Kristie Johnson. My season here at Mount Pleasant is coming to an end. However, I want those of you who call Mount Pleasant your church home, to allow God to lead you to the ministry/auxiliary that will best allow you to serve Him in spirit and in truth. When you find where you fit in, give Him your best service. Why? Because God gave you His best in the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. He deserves your best. Please keep my family in your prayers. God has revealed to me his plan for me in Virginia. I know my best is yet to come. DON’T KEEP CALM! IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE WITH OUR SISTER!! Sunday, the 25th after 10:30 Service, Lucille Henard Fellowship Hall! Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 19 Church Vision, Mission and Strategy We believe God’s desire for us is to join in the work of making disciples all over the world. Therefore we are committed to proclaiming the gospel with the hope of convincing people to accept God’s precious promises of forgiveness and eternal life, and teaching them how to live a Christ like life. We believe that making disciples happens best when people accept the invitation to Come to Christ, Discover their purpose and Go out with the power of God to reach others (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8, NIV). Core Values Everything we do will be done with a spirit of excellence. We will not serve God with any less passion or concern than we do in any other area of life (Romans 12:11). We will be generous financial givers so that no opportunity is missed for this church to make the greatest impact in the world for the Kingdom (II Corinthians 9:615). Every member of this congregation is an important part of God’s family and we will treat them with the upmost respect (James 2:1-13). We will not let tradition get in the way of our purpose. We won’t be afraid to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit into unchartered territory (Matthew 15:1-9; Acts 16:5-15). Mount Pleasant MBC, 5111 W. 62nd Street, 46268 The MESSENGER 20
