The Louisiana Association for Play Therapy
presents...
Initially developed at the turn of the 20th century, today play therapy refers to a large number
of treatment methods, all applying the therapeutic benefits of play. Play therapy differs from
regular play in that the therapist uses a structured, theoretically based approach to help children
address and resolve their own problems. Through play therapy, children are able to express
feelings, modify behavior, and develop problem-solving skills.
The Association for Play Therapy (APT) is a national professional society formed in 1982 to
foster contact among psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, marriage and
family therapists, and other mental health professionals interested in applying the therapeutic
powers of play to communicate with and treat clients, particularly children. Members receive
the quarterly Play Therapy magazine, the bi-annual Journal of Play Therapy, and also receive
reduced rates at the annual national conference.
Learn more about the APT play therapy community at www.a4pt.org.
APT confers its Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT) and Registered Play TherapistSupervisor™ (RPT-S) credentials to help consumers identify those licensed mental health
professionals with specialized training and experience in play therapy. Requirements for the
RPT credential include: 1) a traditional mental health graduate or higher degree by a regionally
accredited college or university; 2) licensure by one or more applicable licensing authorities;
3) completion of a minimum number of play therapy training and supervision clock hours; and
4) completion of the requisite continuing education hours.
Learn more at www.a4pt.org.

Playful Interventions for Positive Change
Eliana Gil, Ph.D.,
Registered Play Therapist - Supervisor
This workshop will provide a rationale for integrating play and family therapy
theory and techniques in order to enhance family relationships, broaden expression
and communication, facilitate warmth and closeness, and encourage perceptual
changes of the family. Specifically, family play therapy can create emotional
connectedness, provide comfort and support, and encourage focused energy,
sharing, and well-being.
1.
The participants will understand the rational for conducting play therapy in
the context of family therapy.
2. The participants will learn two play therapy strategies that might encourage
energetic, physical play.
3. The participants will learn two treatment strategies that engage families
utilizing play therapy.
4. The participants will understand the terms “amplification questions” and
“staying with metaphors.”

Integrating Play Therapy and
Drama Therapy to Facilitate Attachment
Eliana Gil, Ph.D.,
Registered Play Therapist - Supervisor
&
Teresa Dias, M.A.
The fields of play and drama therapy are interwoven in a theoretical premise that
promotes individual creativity and self-expression. Both fields have developed a
sturdy clinical base and have broad application in a wide variety of clinical settings.
This workshop will rely on experiential work, designed to equip clinicians with
easy-to-use physical, energizing activities that enliven and engage young children
and their families. Coincidentally, many drama therapy techniques are used in
dyads or groups and can facilitate interactions designed to foster positive
connections. Thus, many drama therapy techniques can elicit trust, safety, and
positive regards of self and others, thus promoting or enhancing attachment. In
addition, dramatic play or drama therapy techniques can engage families in playful,
creative, and expressive interactions. This workshop will be co-led by a seasoned
clinician and a seasoned theater performer and drama therapist, themselves a
securely attached dyad (Eliana and her daughter Teresa).
1.
Participants will learn two variables present in both play therapy and drama
therapy.
2. Participants will be able to describe two benefits of expressive therapies.
3. Participants will learn two play therapy techniques that can provide useful
assessment information.
4. Participants will learn two drama therapy techniques that promote trust and
positive interactions.

several play therapy conferences on the topic of drama therapy and attachment.
She is a certified parent educator for the Circle of Security Parenting course and has
