Baptism:
The Sacrament of Baptism is usually celebrated on the First and Third Sundays of each month at
Noon. Please call the Rectory and speak to the parish priest to register. First-time parents and
godparents are expected to attend a pre-baptismal formation session, which is offered on the second Sunday of the month in the Church after the 10:30 a.m. Mass as needed,. To register for session, please call parish secretary before first Friday of each month.
Marriage:
Couples planning to be married should contact the Rectory at least 6 months in advance of the
intended wedding date. Attendance at a Marriage Preparation program is required in accord with
Archdiocesan Policy.
Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion:
The parish priests are happy to assist anyone who wishes to receive the anointing of the sick, or to
receive Holy Communion. Special Ministers of Holy Communion also assist in taking Holy Communion to those parishioners who are unable to get to Mass. For more information, kindly call the
Rectory.
Catholic School Policy
School-aged children of OLC attend may attend either Holy Family Regional Catholic School in
Aston or Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic School in Swarthmore. Our Parish does subsidize
Catholic education for all parishioners of OLC who are active and contributing members of the
Parish. Please note: Since our Parish School closed abruptly in June 2011, our school families began attending several Catholic elementary schools in the area. In fairness to those children currently attending the other schools, however, we will consider them “grandfathered” and continue
to subsidize their education in accordance with the policy about attendance and parish support.
Children who attend Public School are requested to register in our PREP Program beginning in
first grade to seventh grade. PREP meets on Tuesday evenings from September to May from 6:30

NEW RESDIENCE OF DON GUANELLA ALMOST COMPLETE
In speaking with Fr. Dennis Weber and others from Don Guanella, they are hoping for a Late
February arrival for 8 residents here at the OLC site for Don Guanella. You’ll notice that the
top soil was re-graded and the fencing around the porches is in. Now, it’s a race to finish all
the interior. Dry wall is still being done, as well as painting, floors and interior doors. Heat
and gas is hooked-up. So in a few weeks time, we should be welcoming 8 new residents, and
for those who are Catholic, they will be new parishioners. Our next Contractor’s meeting is
set for Wednesday, so any more information to pass along, I surely will do so.
THE NEW COEBOURN ELEMENTARY IS BEAUTIFUL
Three weeks ago, on Monday, January 5, I was invited to attend the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the New Coebourn Elementary School. It is truly a beautiful school. Some of the
finishing touches were still to be completed, but over all the school is bright, clean, and warm
and colorful. There is a lot of space and EVERYTHING is new.
There were many dignitaries and state and local officials that spoke. I was happy that Dr.
Steinhoff saw me sitting in the crowd. He acknowledged OLC as a happy place to spend 20
months while waiting for their new building. I echo his sentiments, as they were good
neighbors. As they are getting the new school underway, they’ve been cleaning and moving
out of our building during these past few weeks. (Please note, last week, I mis-spelled Dr. Steinhoff’s name, my sincerest apologies).
ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRAURY 18: LENT BEGINS
Some Information for Lent, but will be given with more detail next week: Due to the pending
snow storm that is expected to hit (last Tuesday), the bulletin Company is requesting this bulletin 2 days
early.
Masses for Ash Wednesday will be

Ashes will also be distributed at 12:15 p.m.
within the Celebration of the Liturgy of the Word

4th Sunday In Ordinary Time

“May I see your photo ID?” That’s a question expected from the passport inspector at any given airport. But it was
quite a surprise to hear it coming from my doctor’s secretary. I thought this was a sad sign of the times we live in,
when duplicity is the main tool of petty thieves and terrorists in our newly suspicious atmosphere.
In His time, Our Lord Jesus Christ had an ID problem of sorts, but in His case, the questioners always asked to know
His identity after He did a good deed, even a miraculous one. In today’s Gospel instance, Jesus frees a man from the
ugly throes of demonic possession. But the townsfolk of Capernaum are quick to ask “What is this? A new teaching
backed up with authentic authority? It’s as close as they came for a demand to see some ID of Jesus. No surprise that
in a gossip-ridden world, Our Lord’s fame spreads all over the place, which is a particular theme in the early part of
Mark’s story.
The pairing of fame with fortune that dominates the wishes of many people today is a clear contradiction of the Christian life goals. Fame has already been famously pared down by the artist Andy Warhol into a mere fifteen minutes.
But that doesn’t deter those ambitious for it.
As for fortune, that pursuit remains ever popular. Lottery tickets are scooped up daily, with little or no thought on the
buyer’s part that their deed “benefits senior citizens.” They want it to benefit them.
Jesus, of course, seeks neither fame nor fortune. In fact, He tries His best to discourage the one, and has no interest in
the other. But He is vitally interested in people having the correct spiritual ID, including us. Oh yes, we have such an
ID. We got it at our Baptism. On that day, our good parents thought enough of us to pass on to us the greatest gift they
could think of: the Catholic faith that they themselves received. A faith that so guided their lives that they knew they
had to pass it on. And so they did.
The end result is that we know who we are without even looking at any card. We are Christ’s. And hopefully proud of
it. Theoretically at least we reject the twin goals of fame and fortune as the reasons for living. Practically speaking, we
acknowledge the pull of those two items on our hearts. Sometimes we forget how counterfeit they are because they
appear so real. That’s when we have to face facts and re-examine our daily decisions.
The great season of Lent is now less than a month away. In car talk, that’s “tune-up time.” Right now we can prepare
for that Lenten project. I suspect that there’s a stalwart Seraphim at the gate of heaven staffing the final checkpoint
before we enter. His “job”, if you will, is to ask us for our “photo ID.” If that’s so, then Lent is a good time to update
those Christian credentials.
There’s an old slogan once used by my late Dad’s insurance company that was valid then and still is today if placed in
the spiritual realm. It proclaimed that “the future belongs to those who prepare for it.” Amen!

Welcome Visitors with Hospitality
Many of our visiting families are traveling long distances to reach
the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015. As an affordable alternative to hotel accommodations and to support the volume of people coming to the Philadelphia area, we are offering
families located in the Philadelphia region the opportunity to
open their doors to our visitors.
Host Families can host visitors in a spare bedroom, a vacated apartment, or any amenable facility.
Visiting individuals and families can then search the Host Family database to find hosts to be matched
to. When registering as a Host Family, you will include information on your hosting situation
(bedrooms, family hobbies, pets, allergies, access to public transportation, etc.). Additionally, each
visiting family will pay a nightly fee to the Host Family. The Host Family can use that money to offset
costs, buy breakfast each day, donate to the visiting family, or in any other way desired. Your role, as
a Host Family, is pivotal in enabling many families to make this trip safe and affordable.

St. James Alumni Association
Once again, the St. James Alumni Association will be sponsoring high school scholarships for the 2015-2016 school
year. The scholarship applications are available upon request

The scholarship applicant must be a practicing Catholic from
a Delaware County parish. The students eligible are graduating 8th graders and current high school students. All applications with the complete requested information must be returned by Wednesday, April 8 by 2:00 pm.
