COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE BISHOP
Collection for Central & Eastern Europe
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Ash Wednesday, February 18, our diocese will take up the
Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.
The collection offers a way for Catholics in the United States to
stand in solidarity with those who experience the ongoing
effects of living under difficult circumstances across the globe.
Grants funded by this collection support pastoral projects,
scholarships, and Catholic organizations working in areas
formerly under Soviet control. The bishops and people of these
regions still face enormous challenges in restoring church
structures and in rebuilding the cultural and spiritual life of the
community, tasks that are often complicated by a lack of
religious freedom.
One funded group, a Czech association for women and children
and the protection of unborn life (Obcanske sdruzeni ONZ—
pomoc a poradenstvi pro zeny a divky), has worked for 23 years
to reduce the rate of abortions in the Czech Republic. When the
association opened its doors in 1990 after the Velvet
Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the country ended in
abortion. Through innovative counseling and support programs
at six regional centers for women in difficult situations, the
association has played a major role in reducing the abortion rate
from 50 percent down to 20 percent. The centers work to protect
the human dignity of both mothers and children, advocating for
the right to life of the unborn.
Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech
government withdrew operational support for its programs. The
Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe
provided a critical bridge grant that allowed the association to
continue its operations while searching for a permanent funding
solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops’ Conference announced
that it would fund the association's operating expenses from its
own budget, thereby guaranteeing the future of the association
and its crucial work.
In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection
needs your help. Please be generous. Your donation will
continue to restore and build the future of the Church in Central
and Eastern Europe. Thank you and God bless you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet

THE 2015 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES
ANNUAL APPEAL IS UNDERWAY
“EXTENDING GOD’S MERCY”
The 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal begins with a
mailing that many of our parishioners have received or will
soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking for a
pledge to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal.
The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the
diocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries
here in our parish. For example, funds support the permanent
diaconate and seminarian programs, catechist training and lay
formation through the Newman Institute, youth and young adult
leadership, and more.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Extending God’s
Mercy.” The greatest act of God's Mercy toward humankind
was to send His Son. People lost the way to God, the truth
about God and a life in God by our own fault. Jesus came to
give us the Way, the Truth and a new Life. Jesus taught us to be
MERCIFUL as His Father is MERCIFUL. (Luke: 6:36)
On Valentine’s Day, we celebrate human love by
acknowledging those special people in our lives by sending
them a card or buying them chocolates or flowers.
Every day, we experience a greater love than this…
a Divine Love. “For God so loved the world that He gave
His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might
not perish, but might have eternal life.” John 3:16
Jesus is continually extending His Sacred Heart to us in the
Blessed Sacrament. Do we celebrate and acknowledge this
Divine Love?
Why not respond to His Love by making Him
a commitment? Reserve a distraction-free hour once
a week with Jesus to show your love and gratitude.
Find the peace that only He can give!
For more information, contact Joe and/or Maureen Garro
at 630.968.3855 or [email protected].
Flame of Faith
The candles will burn in the Sacred Heart Chapel this
week for the following intentions:
† Repose of the soul of Lyndon B. Underwood
† Philip, Frances & Tommy Baczewski
† Healing for Dick Snyder
† Turn my son’s anger into love for his dad
† Healing for Jim Valentinas
† Special intention
How do we acknowledge God’s mercy and show Him our
gratitude? One way that we can show our gratitude is by giving
back to God the gifts He shared with us. We can support our
parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world with
gifts of time, talent and treasure. The gifts we give enable
ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of lives.
Our parish goal is $78,178.00. With your financial support, we
can exceed this goal. When we exceed our goal in paid pledges,
we will receive 65% of the amount over goal for use in our
parish.
Please answer Bishop Conlon’s request and make a generous
pledge. All pledges can be paid in 10 installments. Thank you
in advance for your support.
Our beautiful altar floral arrangement this weekend
is donated by Barbara Kross in remembrance of the
anniversary of Barbara & Ed Kross.
Thank you!
For the grace to pray privately and to pray together,
-Lord, hear us!
For the grace to serve the poor with dedication and faithfulness,
-Lord, hear us!
For the grace to support and care for each other in our
Conference,
-Lord, hear us!
For the grace to be balanced and effective Vincentians after the
heart of St. Vincent,
-Lord, hear us! Amen
