WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today's Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus
sounds so simple and casual, it's easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are
made.
John points to Jesus: "Look,"he says, "there is the Lamb of God."John's faith
in Jesus is evident, so evident that John's disciples immediately leave his side to
follow this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend
time with him, and are quick to spread the good news of their discovery: W
" e have
found the Messiah."
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many
ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb
of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone
among the Jewish people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own
society watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

El relato del Evangelio de hoy en el que Juan y sus discípulos ven y siguen
a Jesús, suena tan sencillo e informal, que fácilmente pasan desapercibidos los
importantes actos de fe que ocurren.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick.
People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often
noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength,
patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally
too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it
may even be too late for viaticum, the true l"ast rite."
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis
of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is
celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope
for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We
bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate
the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a
rich remedy to body and soul?

Uno de los muchos títulos dados a Jesús en los evangelios es el de Agnus Dei (Cordero de Dios). La imagen de un
cordero no era extraña en la Palestina del primer siglo cristiano, pues se encontraban ovejas y pastores por todas partes. El
cordero es la oveja de menos de un año. Es reconocido como símbolo de mansedumbre e inocencia en muchas culturas.
Fue Juan Bautista quien le dio ese extraño título a Jesús (Juan 1:36). La imágen del cordero despertaba en los judíos, incluidos Jesús, Juan Bautista y los discípulos, la memoria de los célebres eventos del Éxodo. Cada año las familias judías escogían un corderito y lo preparaban para sacrificarlo en la Pascua. La mitad de la carne del sacrificio se ofrecía a Dios y la
otra mitad se la comía la familia, de esta manera establecían una comunión con Dios. Designar a Jesús como Agnus Dei, era
reconocer que él quitaría el pecado y que con su propia carne establecería una comunión entre Dios y la humanidad.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Having finished the Holy Season of Christmas, the
Church returns once again to the Season of Ordinary Time. It
is only a brief period of five or six weeks before we begin the
Season of Lent, a time of deeper prayer, mortification, and
almsgiving. Between Christmas and Lent, the Church concentrates on renewing its commitment to the vocation we have
received and to the study of doctrine.
Each person’s vocation is specific, though it has
many characteristics in common with other people as well.
We are all called to be children of God, that is, God desires
that all people be Catholic, that all people be saved. He also
calls to be holy, just as He is holy. Within this vocation to
holiness and the Christian life, every person receives an individual call to a vocation as a state in life. I have the vocation
to the Priesthood, others have a vocation as Religious Brothers and Sisters; the vast majority have the vocation of living
in the world, either married or single, and carrying out the
apostolate of spreading the Gospel. The Church teaches us
that when we live our vocation faithfully, accepting the various crosses with joy and growing in holiness, we experience
peace and felicity. That does not mean that our vocations will
be easy, or that we will be without temptation or challenges.
On the contrary, we will often encounter very difficult challenges to our vocations. But it is confidence in Almighty God,
whose birth we have so happily celebrated during these days
of Christmas, that will allow us to persevere with hope.
In order to be effective in our vocation, and in order to attract more people to the Holy Faith, we have a serious
duty to know and study Catholic doctrine. Holy Mother
Church teaches us that, “In order to safeguard this virtue of
faith in its integrity, We declare it to be profitable and consistent with the requirements of the time, that each one, according to the measure of his capacity and intelligence,
should make a deep study of Christian doctrine, and imbue
his mind with as perfect a knowledge as may be of those matters that are interwoven with religion and lie within the range
of reason.” (Sapientiae Christianae, Encyclical of Pope Leo
XIII on Christians as Citizens, 13) This means that we to
know and keep our faith by the study of doctrine and the practice of religious devotion.
Let us begin again to immerse ourselves in the
study of holy doctrine, perhaps by reviewing our Catechisms
or spiritual works. In this way, we strengthen our faith and
live our vocation better.
Después de haber terminado la Santa Temporada de
Navidad, la Iglesia vuelve una vez más a la Estación del Tiempo Ordinario. Es sólo un breve período de cinco o seis semanas

su integridad, Declaramos que sea rentable y coherente con las

Comencemos de nuevo para sumergirnos en el estudio
de la doctrina sagrada, tal vez mediante la revisión de nuestros
catecismos o trabajos espirituales. De esta manera, fortalecemos
nuestra fe y vivimos nuestra vocación mejor.

ZUMBA CLASSES
Health, music, entertainment & latin flavor
Everyone is invited, men and women.
Classes are Mon-Wed-Fri, 7:30pm-8:30pm.
The cost per class is $3 per person. Children 7 yrs. and older are welcome but must
pay to participate. There will be no childcare. Registration will be onsite at 7:15pn. Come and join us!!!

Invitamos a todas las personas que sufren
de depresión, ansiedad o estrés, a que
vengan a participar en nuestro grupo de
apoyo. Somos un grupo confidencial.

Pancakes Day / Dia de Panqueques
On Sunday, February 15th, we will
have a Pancake Breakfast in the
school gym from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The cost of the breakfast will be
$6 per person. On that day, we will
also combine the 9 a.m. English
Mass and 10:30 a.m. Spanish Mass
for a 10 a.m. Bilingual Mass. Please make plans now to
join us for this parish gathering.
El Domingo 15 de febrero, vamos a tener un desayuno
de panqueques en el gimnasio de la escuela a las 10a.m.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! As we began
our PSR program for 2015, we are looking forward to
bringing in the Season into the Ordinary Time without
losing the spirit of Christmas in our classes or in our
homes....which is love for Christ and others.
Dates to remember:
Confirmation Sponsors/Student Meeting: Jan 13, 2015
at 6pm-7pm in the old convent . Mass at 7pm after the
meeting.
Confirmation Retreat: Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 - 8am4pm for all our Confirmation 1, Confirmation 2 students, and including our Youth Group in the Centennial
Room. We are asking parents and parishioners to help
with snacks/drinks. Students pay a minimum of $20.00
for the retreat. Please call Mrs. Socorro Perez at (314)

have any question.
Sacrament of Penance: First Confession: Saturday,
Feb. 7, 2015 - 1pm.
A Special Mass: Feb. 7 at 5pm - Bring your candles for

Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo!! Cuando comenzamos nuestro programa PSR para 2015, estamos mirando
adelante a traer la Temporada en el Tiempo Ordinario,
sin perder el espíritu de la Navidad en nuestras clases o
en nuestras casas .... que es el amor por Cristo y por los
demás.
Fechas para recordar:
Confirmación: Reunión de Padrinos/Madrinas y Estudiante: 13 de enero 2015 a 6:00pm-7:00pm en el convento. Misa a las 7:00pm después de la reunión.
Retiro para los estudiantes de Confirmación: Sábado,
24 de enero 2015 - de las 8am-4pm para todos nuestros
estudiantes de Confirmación 1, Confirmación 2 y el
Grupo de Jóvenes en la habitación del Centenario. Estamos pidiendo a los padres y los feligreses ayudar con /
bebidas y snacks. Los estudiantes pagan un mínimo de
$20.00 para el retiro. Por favor llame a la Sra. Socorro

Sacramento de la Penitencia: Primera Confesión: Sábado, 07 de febrero 2015 - 1:00pm. Padres, por favor traiga a sus hijos por lo menos 15 minutos antes de la Confesión para que podamos prepararlos con un examen de
conciencia. Deben estar bien vestidos.
Una misa especial: 7 de febrero a las 17:00 - Traiga sus
velas para la procesión
