«He had noticed how they tried to take the places of honor»
Today, Jesus teaches us a masterly lesson: do not choose the best seat: «When you are invited to a wedding party, do not choose the best seat» (Lk 14:8). Jesus knows we like to look for the best places: in official
acts, informal gatherings, at home, at the table. He knows our trend to overrate ourselves out of vanity, or worse
still, out of a poorly hidden pride. So let us therefore be careful with honors, for «the heart remains chained
where it finds the possibility of delight» (St. Leo the Great).
Haven’t we ever been told that there were no colleagues with more merit or better personal values than
us? It is not, therefore, a question of a sporadic feat, but of an assumed attitude of considering ourselves the
smartest, the most important, the most deserving, the always rightful ones; an aspiration supposing a narrow
vision of ourselves and of those around us. In fact, Jesus invites us to practice the perfect humility, consisting in
not judging ourselves or others, and in being conscious of our individual insignificance, in the global cosmic
and of life concert.
Thus, Jesus, proposes to us, by precaution, to always choose the lowest seat, because, while we may not
know the intimate reality of the others, we are fully aware that in the great show of the Universe we are totally
irrelevant. Therefore, to place us in the last position is to be on the safe side. Lest the Lord, that knows us well
intimately, did not have to tell us: «‘Please give this person your place’. What shame is yours when you take
the lowest seat!» (Lk 14:9).
In the same line of thought, the Master invites us to place ourselves with humility beside those chosen
by God: the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind, and to be at the same level as them to find ourselves
amidst those God loves with special tenderness, and to overcome the repugnance and shame to share with them
table and friendship.

The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Michael
Chapel continues next Tuesday, August 30th from 7:00 a.m. until

The St. Joseph Fund Raising Committee is having
its annual Raffle to be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The
prizes are an Apple IPad Air; a 32” Smart TV and two night stay at
the Buccaneer Hotel. All proceeds go towards the church operations.

“JUNTOS CONSTRUYENDO EL REINO DE DIOS”
«Los invitados elegían los primeros puestos»
Hoy, Jesús nos da una lección magistral: no busquéis el primer lugar: «Cuando seas convidado por alguien
a una boda, no te pongas en el primer puesto» (Lc 14,8). Jesucristo sabe que nos gusta ponernos en el primer lugar:
en los actos públicos, en las tertulias, en casa, en la mesa... Él conoce nuestra tendencia a sobrevalorarnos por vanidad, o todavía peor, por orgullo mal disimulado. ¡Estemos prevenidos con los honores!, ya que «el corazón queda
encadenado allí donde encuentra posibilidad de frición» (San León Magno).
¿Quién nos ha dicho, en efecto, que no hay colegas con más méritos o con más categoría personal? No se
trata, pues, del hecho esporádico, sino de la actitud asumida de tenernos por más listos, los más importantes, los
más cargados de méritos, los que tenemos más razón; pretensión que supone una visión estrecha sobre nosotros
mismos y sobre lo que nos rodea. De hecho, Jesús nos invita a la práctica de la humildad perfecta, que consiste en
no juzgarnos ni juzgar a los demás, y a tomar conciencia de nuestra insignificancia individual en el concierto global
del cosmos y de la vida.
Entonces, el Señor, nos propone que, por precaución, elijamos el último sitio, porque, si bien desconocemos
la realidad íntima de los otros, sabemos muy bien que nosotros somos irrelevantes en el gran espectáculo del universo. Por tanto, situarnos en el último lugar es ir a lo seguro. No fuera caso que el Señor, que nos conoce a todos
desde nuestras intimidades, nos tuviese que decir: «‘Deja el sitio a éste’, y entonces vayas a ocupar avergonzado el
último puesto» (Lc 14,9).
En la misma línea de pensamiento, el Maestro nos invita a ponernos con toda humildad al lado de los preferidos de Dios: pobres, inválidos, cojos y ciegos, y a igualarnos con ellos hasta encontrarnos en medio de quienes
Dios ama con especial ternura, y a superar toda repugnancia y vergüenza por compartir mesa y amistad con ellos.

pobres, proclamar la libertad a los prisioneros y
oprimidos y restituir la vista a los ciegos.
