Dear Friends,
May 8. 2016
In choosing the theme for last year’s priest convocation I’m sure Bishop Guglielmone was reflecting
on the importance of evangelization and building community when he chose ‘communication’ as the theme!
At the convocation we were blessed with a number of speakers who shared their expertise on the
present state of communication in the modern world. They also suggested ways in which we as church leaders
could be more effective in communicating the message of God’s love to our local communities and, in particular, to those who are searching for God.
Taking Bishop Guglielmone’s challenge to heart, we have taken steps to create a communications
ministry team at Our Lady of the Hills parish.
Why is this necessary? We are at the service of the Gospel and as believers we are trying to proclaim the gospel in new and exciting ways. As St. John Paul II wrote in his Message for the 36th World Communications Day, “But the history of evangelization is not just a matter of geographic expansion, for the Church
has also had to cross many cultural thresholds, each of which called for fresh energy and imagination in proclaiming the one Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
This team, four parishioners (including myself) agreed to meet regularly to discuss and evaluate
how the parish is getting its message out and how we as parishioners are communicating with each other.
Starting this weekend, a commercial vendor (Diocesan Publications) will begin publishing our Sunday bulletin. We recommended the change not because the present bulletin was inferior, but because we
were looking for as St. John Paul II said, “Fresh energy and imagination in proclaiming the one Gospel of Jesus
Christ.” It is our hope that from this new bulletin “The face of Christ may emerge!” (St. John Paul II) The new
bulletin will also be more cost effective.
This weekend in the bulletin you will notice some changes, do not be alarmed! For instance, we felt
it was not necessary to publish the weekend ministers schedule in the bulletin every week since each minister
receives a list in the mail. Also we know it is not necessary to publish the priest’s name who is celebrating a
particular Mass. We remember, the Eucharist is the reason we go to church on Sunday. Also, you will notice
there is no sick list in this weekend’s bulletin. If you would like the parish to pray for someone who is sick
please call the parish office. The person will be kept on the prayer list only for six weeks, unless someone calls
the office to tell us to keep the name on the list for another six weeks.
Please look for more information in the bulletin regarding additional communication ministry
changes. If you have any comments or suggestions please go to the hospitality table and write a note to the
‘communication team.’ Please be patient with us, this is a work in progress. We want this to be all about communication, there we hope to see the face of Christ!
May Mary, our Mother, watch over and protect you always, Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day!
Fr. John

Queridos amigos,
Mayo 8,2016

Father’s Day Cards- remembering fathers at Mass cards are

Both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict have encouraged all
Catholics to seek to be “baptized in the Holy Spirit”. On May
11, 2008 before praying the Regina Caeli with thousands of
people gathered in St. Peter's Square, Pope Benedict made
this statement: "Today I would like to extend this invitation
to everyone, let us rediscover, dear brothers and sisters, the
beauty of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.”
Pope Francis in his address to a group of 53,000 gathered in
Rome in 2014 made this request of those involved in the
charismatic renewal: “ I expect from you that you share
with all, in the Church, the grace of Baptism in the Holy Spirit”.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops in 1997 encouraged
““the whole Church to look into and embrace baptism in the
Holy Spirit” as “part of the normal Christian life”.
On May 10, in the church, at the regular Joy in the Spirit
prayer time of 7pm, an information session will be presented by Mike Culbertson, on the subject of “baptism in the
Holy Spirit”. What is it? How do I embrace it? What can it
mean for my life? Is it meant for everyone? Please join us
for a brief time of prayer and praise along with this informative presentation on this very important subject.
Please call John Killilea at 803-201-7900 or email [email protected] for more information.
