Activities Program: Key Information We strive to create an activities program that offers an opportunity for every student to be involved. Students who are engaged in some organization or activity, in addition to academics, tend to be more successful during high school. Involvement in the culture and life of our school also makes the high school experience more enjoyable and memorable. • We are proud of our Activities Program and we strive continually to improve our program. • Our expectation is that every BHS student will be involved in our school in some way. • We encourage every student to find a club, team, or activity to connect to at school. GENERAL INFORMATION We encourage every student involved in activities to purchase an ASB sticker for their student body card. The sticker offers reduced price for admission to athletic contests and other events. The revenue from ASB stickers goes to support our activities program. There are several ways to find out about clubs and activities at BHS. • There is a list attached to this information • In the fall there will be a club fair to introduce students to the wide array of opportunities for involvement. • A club bulletin board in the Student Center features information about the activities program. Athletics Program: Key Information Beaverton High School has a rich tradition of excellence in athletics and activities. Research shows that students who are involved in after-‐school activities, achieve higher academic success and form a stronger bond with their school community. So, whether it is running on the football field, singing in the musical, or being part of the band, every student is encouraged to get involved. GENERAL INFORMATION If you are interested in participating in athletics you will need to complete the following forms prior to participation. These forms can be found on the Beaverton High School Website, MetroLeague.org, BHS Main Office, or the Athletic Office, Room 206 (Athletic Office opens Aug. 10, 2015). 1. Participation Form -‐ Shows Insurance and receives parents permission to participate. Athletic Participation Forms/White Activity Forms/Pink 2. State Physical Form -‐ Good for two years. Doctor and Parent/Guardian must sign this form. 3. $225 payment for all Athletics -‐ If placed on a team. Activities Participation Fee is $85. Students with financial need may contact the Athletic Office. OSAA ACADEMICS: Athletic and Activities: In order to participate in sports, all athletes must meet Oregon School Athletics and Activities Association (OSAA) and Beaverton School District Athletic/Activity Grade standards. Grade checks will occur at the beginning of each season and once during the season. Incoming freshmen are automatically granted eligibility at the beginning of fall season. They must, however, meet both standards during the rest of their high school career. The two standards are: 1. State Rules – Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA): a. The OSAA grade checks are done at the beginning of each sport/activity season. Athletes must have passed 5 classes from the previous semester. (2.5 Credits) Athletes must maintain 5 classes or more during the season. (2.5 Credits) This also applies to participants in activities. b. Athletes must also be making satisfactory progress toward the school's graduation requirements. (4 Credits by Soph. yr.; 9.5 Credits by Junior yr.; 16 credits by Senior yr.) NOTE: A student should be averaging 6 credits a year to reach current school graduation requirements. 2. Beaverton School District Grade Requirements: (CURRENTLY UNDER DISTRICT REVIEW) During the season we will do grade checks based on the BSD standards. At the time of the check, students must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and no F's in any classes. Failure to meet these standards will result in student ineligibility for game/event participation. Upon meeting the standard and teacher notification, the athletic director may allow reinstatement. (Special Education students may also be evaluated on their IEP progress.) Reglas estatales – Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA): a. For more information on Sports

How to Fit Band Classes Into Your Student’s Schedule Plenty of research has shown that students who include music education in their curriculum get better grades and score higher on their SAT exams. There are ways to create a well-‐balanced high school experience that includes rigorous academic variety and one or two band classes. What You Should Know: During freshman and sophomore years, Health (1&2) and PE (2 semesters) are in the standard planning guide as required. •
Although these courses are required to graduate, they can be taken at any time during high school •
Any and all courses can be taken for credit at institutions with accredited high school programs •
Although changes to your student’s schedule can be made as late as the first week or two of the school year, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THEN. It is best to try to meet with your counselor now, while school is in session. Many students in band choose to enroll in online courses to satisfy graduation requirements and to make room in their schedule for other electives such as concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble and jazz band. Courses online cost less than $150, and do require your student to ensure the course is completed within one year of registering for it. What You Should Do Today Call the BHS Counseling Office and make an appointment with your student’s counselor. Email (add @beaverton.k12.or.us) BHS Counselors Last Name Alpha Phone Brian Hunt A-‐D 503-‐259-‐4914 brian_hunt Derek Nekoba E-‐K 503-‐259-‐4918 derek_nekoba Bonnie Heaton L-‐Rh 503-‐259-‐4910 bonnie_heaton Liz Perez Ri-‐Z 503-‐259-‐4912 liz_perez Leslie Barrios ELL 503-‐259-‐4915 leslie_barrios How to Fit Band Classes In To Schedule _Rev. 05/26/15 Frequently Asked Questions Here is a handy list of FAQs about instrumental music and dance curriculum and activities at Beaverton High School. Be sure to let us know if you don't find the answer to your question! Q. What are BHSBE and BHSME? What is the difference? BHSBE stands for Beaverton High School Bands & Ensembles. It is the abbreviation used to refer to music programs and curriculum at our school. BHSME is the abbreviation for Beaverton High School Marching Ensemble, an extracurricular activity. In either case, we are proud to consider ourselves an "ensemble" of instrumental musicians and color guard. Together, we form the largest student and parent group sharing a common interest. Q. What band classes are available at BHS? Instrumental Music Studio is ideal for students who have had some or no previous music instruction. Course curriculum is focused on building better music reading skills and establishing a strong foundation important to playing an instrument for the first time, or trying a new instrument. If you learned how to play clarinet, but are interested in branching out to acoustic guitar, this is the class for you. Play piano and want to learn marimba? Take this class. Concert Band | Symphonic Band | Wind Ensemble There are 3 wind and percussion instrumental band courses at BHS. Incoming freshmen who actively participated in middle school band typically begin in Concert Band, and advance to Symphonic Band by audition as their skill and performance level develops. Music programs focus on tone production, articulation, reading music, scales and solo and ensemble performance. Repertoire consists of literature encompassing various styles and periods of music. The Wind Ensemble, BHS’ top level instrumental music class, competes at OSAA wind ensemble festivals, and is recognized as one of the top band in the State of Oregon. Students enrolled in wind ensemble, concert and symphonic bands are the core of the BHS pep band for home football games in the fall, several basketball games during the spring, and represent the school at the Beaverton Celebration Parade and the Rose or Starlight Parade in Portland each year. Band members also play at school assemblies. Your middle school band director will make a recommendation to the BHS Director of Bands, regarding placement in the appropriate level band class, or you can contact [email protected] to schedule an audition. Jazz Band The BHS Jazz Band consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a full rhythm section (drum set, bass, guitar and piano) in a traditional Big Band setting, modeled on legendary acts like Count Basie or Duke Ellington, as well as small combo collaboration and improvisation. Students study and perform a variety of literature from various periods of jazz performance, ranging from BHS Marching Ensemble Frequently Asked Questions v. 05-05-15
1 Swing to Bossa Nova, and Funk to Fusion. The jazz band competes at local jazz festivals during the spring term. Previous experience is desired but not required. Q. I signed up to take a band class -‐ does that mean that I'm automatically in the Marching Ensemble? No. Marching Ensemble is a fall season extra-‐curricular activity, and is different from forecasting for band class. About 70% of students in band class also participate in the marching ensemble because it is a lot of fun and an easy way to make a lot of friends. Q. What time commitment is required for marching ensemble? Joining the Marching Ensemble is an extra-‐curricular activity (outside of school hours). In addition to what is listed above for taking a band class, the commitment includes: • Mandatory attendance at Band Camp during the last two weeks in August. During camp, the ensemble learns marching skills, the music and choreography of the fall show. • Two to three weekly after-‐school practices during Sept/Oct • Four Saturday all-‐day-‐and-‐evening marching competitions in Oct/Nov • Representing BHS in local parades (Beaverton Celebration, and Starlight or Rose Parade) • You must meet the No Pass, No Play grade point requirements (no F's, 2.0 GPA). Q. Can I still be in the Marching Ensemble if I don't take a band class? Yes. Although taking a band class for credit is highly recommended, marching band welcomes students interested in dance or music and we will figure out a way to incorporate your talent. Students who play piano, guitar, bass or string instruments can participate in the front ensemble (“pit”), the non-‐marching members of the ensemble. Q. Can I be in the Marching Ensemble if I attend a BSD Option School, a Private School or am Home Schooled? Yes -‐ as long as the BSD Option School or Private School does not offer Marching Band and you are within the Beaverton School District attendance boundaries. Please contact the Band Director and the Band Booster President to ensure that you get onto our mailing list. Q. What if I want to play a fall sport -‐ can I still be in the Marching Ensemble? Yes! We have had band members involved with Cross Country and Soccer -‐ just about all fall sports are possible with the exception of Varsity Football, Varsity Volleyball, and Varsity Cheerleading because of the direct time conflict with their games. Planning your time wisely and communicating with your coaches, section leader and the Band Director will be essential. Fall BHS Marching Ensemble Frequently Asked Questions v. 05-05-15
2 sport tryout times may overlap -‐ see the Band Director and your coach in August to arrange any short absences from either activity. Don't worry -‐ it will all work out. Q. Do BHS Bands go on any trips? Yes. The marching ensemble averages 4 competitions per season, and travels primarily within Oregon and Washington. Every four years the Director of Bands sponsors a BIG TRIP for all band students that includes master class instruction, festival competition, marching, and dance performance. In 2015 BHS Bands and Ensembles traveled to Disneyland in Southern California. Q. When does the Marching Ensemble hold their practices? In late August we hold Band Camp, where attendance is mandatory. In the fall, the full ensemble (band and dance team/color guard) usually practice Tuesdays, 6:00-‐9:00pm and Fridays, 2:45 to 5:00pm. In addition to full ensemble rehearsals, sections generally practice on after school on either Monday, Wednesday or Thursday from 2:45 to 4:15. Sections are small groups lead by a student leader, and are based on instrumentation (e.g. high brass, low brass, clarinets, flutes, battery, front ensemble (pit), saxophones and dance team/color guard). Occasionally sections opt to meet more often -‐ this is a student-‐driven decision made by section leaders and each section. These practices end after our last competition on the first Saturday of November. Q. What is "Band Camp" -‐ and why is attendance mandatory for Marching Ensemble members? Band Camp takes place during the last two weeks of August (in 2015 on August 17-‐28). This is a time of hard work, where students learn the drill (field formations) they will use in competitions and at football games. It's also a fun time -‐ when friendships are formed as the band comes together as a unit. On the final Friday evening, family and friends are invited to see the band perform all they have learned. A dessert potluck usually follows. You can expect to see a sea of proud, slightly sunburned faces on the field, and hear enthusiastic cheering from the stands. It's amazing to see how far the group comes in such a short time! Getting to know other kids before school starts is a real bonus for freshmen band members. Fall sport tryout times my overlap -‐ see the Band Director and your coach in August to arrange any short absences from either activity. Don't worry -‐ it will all work out. Q. Can incoming freshmen and new marchers get their music early in the summer, to prepare for Band Camp? We always try to get music to all students before camp begins. It is critical that we have your email address and other contact information so we can get you the latest information. Music will also be posted on our website, www.bhsbe.org when it is available. BHS Marching Ensemble Frequently Asked Questions v. 05-05-15
3 Q. Do you have to have your own instrument, or are some available through BHS? BHS can provide for most large instruments, and percussion. Please see the Band Director for specifics. Q. Are there fees involved with joining the Marching Ensemble? Yes. There is an Activity Fee levied by the Beaverton School District, which you will pay directly to the District. The fee is $85.00 for the 2015-‐16 school year. Participation fees for all marching ensemble members is $425. New members pay $40 more for new marching shoes. BHSME participation fees are among the lowest in the state, and cover most costs including uniform cleaning/maintenance, competition fees, meals and transportation costs. There are fundraising opportunities for students, and financial aid options through the BHS Band Boosters, depending upon availability of funds and a student and family’s need and willingness to volunteer. Financial aid is awarded on a first come, first served basis to 10-‐12 students annually. It is strongly recommended that requests be submitted when registering for the ensemble. The financial aid program is supported by the generosity of current and alumni band boosters and local businesses. Q. Can I letter in band? Yes! The requirements for lettering in band and color guard are listed on our website. Q. Where can I get more information? Explore www.bhsbe.org. to learn more, or email [email protected] to get answers to your questions. BHS Marching Ensemble Frequently Asked Questions v. 05-05-15

Two excellent ways to support the students and faculty of Beaverton High School Booster Club is a membership-‐based association of BHS parents and alumni who raise money to support programs, events and opportunities that enhance the overall student experience. In addition to membership dues ($20), a donation to Booster Club provides financial assistance to a wide variety of sports, activities and clubs, as well as scholarships and staff appreciation events. All money raised via memberships, donations and concession stand sales is distributed during the current school year. Examples of programs and events sponsored by Booster Club recently include: purchasing student tickets to playoff games, hosting staff appreciation lunches, providing funds for Grad Night and graduation-‐related events and financial support for various sports and activities as requested throughout the school year. To donate to Booster Club, a 501(c)(3) charity, please visit www.bhsbc.org/donation. Or you can contribute via check using the Booster Club membership form in this packet. Success Fund is a fundraising campaign dedicated to providing Beaverton H.S. with sustainable financial support that permits for long-‐range planning and execution, beyond what the school district can provide. A donation to the Success Fund is invested in academic programs, technology upgrades, student financial support and facility improvements that in many cases span several years. Examples of programs and projects made possible by the Success Fund include: major remodels and upgrades to the school’s library, college and career center and community center, an infusion of classroom-‐based technology throughout the school, a mini-‐grant program that funds teacher requests for field trips and programs that benefit individual classes and the launch of a new career pathway focusing on engineering and trades. To donate to Success Fund, also a 501(c)(3) charity, please visit www.bhsbc.org/bhssuccessfund. [NOTE: Not everyone can afford to make a financial contribution, and the volunteering of one’s time and energy often can be just as valuable and rewarding. It has been remodeled, expanded and had its third floor removed. It has survived fires, earthquakes and an influenza epidemic. Its alumni have fought in multiple wars but have never seen the Cubs win the World Series. And this fall, as the 100th graduating class to attend Beaverton High School starts its senior year, the students, parents, staff and alumni of Beaverton’s oldest high school are joining with Booster Club to plan a celebration. We invite you to be a part of it. If you or members of your family, including previous generations, attended Beaverton High School, look for upcoming centennial celebration events at www.bhscentennial.org. We’d welcome any photographs you have that were taken at Beaverton High School over the decades or any uniforms, spirit gear or other vintage items your family may have that are related to BHS. Also, Beaverton High School will be launching its own Hall of Achievement in the fall of 2016, honoring outstanding students, alumni, teachers and staff from the school’s first 100 years. If you know of a worthy candidate for consideration, look for more information coming this fall about how, when and where you can submit a nomination form. The city of Beaverton added 9th-‐grade classes in 1902, 10th grade in 1910 and 11th grade in 1915. By 1916, with a 12th grade to be added, Beaverton built the current Beaverton High School: On June 19, 1916, Beaverton High School was dedicated. As described by the Beaverton Times: “Never in the history of Beaverton has so large a crowd gathered to dedicate a public enterprise and through the entire assembly there seemed to run the feeling of pride and the enthusiasm of progress.” Construction costs were $20,778; two teachers taught all four grades and were also the principal and vice principal. As we approach the start of the 100th school year within these venerable walls, let’s honor those who have come before and celebrate those who are preparing to make their own mark on the world! Dear Reader,
The Hummer, Beaverton High School’s student newspaper in its 94th year, is
offering subscriptions again this year for $15! Subscribers will receive in the mail
every edition that the staff prints for the 2014-2015 school year.
For those of you who are not familiar, The Hummer is a student-run publication
whose staff is responsible for generating story ideas that are engaging and
interesting to its readers; this includes not only BHS students and staff but the
entire Beaverton community. Recent topics covered by the staff have addressed
the Beaverton High Success Fund, band and choir competitions, state athletic
playoffs, theatrical productions, and the impact of the Smarter Balanced exams on
the school community. We feel that such issues deserve not only the attention of
the students, but also the parents and the general community of Beaverton.
Part of what The Hummer staff must also take into consideration, are the costs of
publishing the paper to distribute to the school and community. We are an entirely
self-sustained paper. Consequently, we rely completely on revenue generated by
the ads we sell to local businesses, and on the people who choose to subscribe to
the paper and receive it by mail each month. Subscriptions represent a large
portion of our income, and we are very grateful to the individuals and families
who support us. It is the hope of the staff that parents of students and active
members of the community will purchase a subscription this fall in order to show
their support for The Hummer. This will assist us in continuing one of the richest
traditions at Beaverton High School.
Thank you for your support,
The Hummer Editorial Staff
Please clearly print the information below, and include your payment of $15 upon
return of this slip. You may send it by mail to the school, c/o: The Hummer, or
bring it with you when you turn in the rest of your forms on Beaver Days. We will
accept either cash, or checks made out to The Beaverton High Hummer.

Why a School-Based Health Center
Adolescents are often reported to

of any age group, and they are the
least likely to seek care through
traditional office-based settings. To
serve this group, Washington County

regardless of their ability to pay, by
reducing the inconvenience, cost, and
the need for transportation.
