Simplicity Is a Gi
December 20, 2015
ADVENT 4
Simplicity is a magnificent gi , especially when life becomes so complicated
around us. We are in what is perhaps the most elaborated and celebrated
season of the year. Christmas far surpasses Easter and all secular holidays in the
amount of prepara on, decora on and money spent. In contrast, today readings
remind us of simple but powerful truths that are the real spiritual inspira on of
this wonderful season.
In the first reading, sinful people ask how many sacrifices are needed to appease
a God justly angry over their sin. Micah the prophet replies that the Lord
requires only that “we act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.” The
Lord is found in ordinary places and in grand liturgies and wherever Chris ans
gather. There is no place too small or too dark and no life too troubled where the
Lord cannot come. That is one simple but powerful truth of Christmas.
The second reading speaks of Christ’s great sacrifice, not in terms of Temple
ritual, but in terms of His life completely dedicated to the Father. The greatest
gi we can give to the Lord and to others is ourselves. There is no expensive
Christmas gi that can subs tute for the gi of our love, support, empathy, me,
prayer and honest and faithful friendship.
Our Gospel tells us of the Visita on, Mary’s great gi to Elizabeth. During the
difficult me of the older Elizabeth’s pregnancy, our Blessed Mother gave the gi
of her me, assistance and loyal support.
Is this the year that we simplify our Christmas celebra on in order to make it
much more personal and spiritual? Today's readings give us the three simple
truths of Christmas that we should consider as we celebrate with our family.
The Lord comes to any open heart. We needn’t make great expenditures for that
to happen. We have only to willingly open our life to Christ, Who is among us
wherever we are to illuminate the darkest streets of any person’s life.
The gi of ourselves remains the most magnificent gi we can give to God and to
others. Gospel fidelity can affect enormous change in our life on levels we least
expect, and subsequently posi vely affect others' lives.
Daily life is where God and the human person most o en encounter. Mary’s visit
to Elizabeth reminds us that the Lord’s work and our most important gi takes
place not just in moments of high drama, but in the ordinary transac ons of
human contact and care. Mary’s simple, helpful visit was Elizabeth’s “Christmas.”
These wonderful but simple truths bring the
real spiritual energy for Christmas and have
the poten al of changing our life for the rest
of the year.
