FROM THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST, BOISE
Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle
November 30, 2015
Dear Pastors, Administrators, Parish Life Directors, and Pastoral Associates,
Fulfilling the request of Pope Francis in Misericordiae Vultus (#3), Bishop Peter Christensen will open the Door
of Mercy and initiate the Jubilee Year of Mercy in the “mother church of the faithful” of our Diocese, the Cathedral of St.
John the Evangelist, on Sunday, December 13th, 2015, the Third Sunday of Advent, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. I invite you
and the faithful of your parish to participate in this Liturgy. Please extend this invitation to the faithful of your community
in the manner you judge best.
The Door of Mercy at the Cathedral will be open for the duration of the Holy Year in welcome to visitors. Pope
Francis states, . . . such visits to these holy sites are so often grace-filled moments, as people discover a path to conversion. Every Particular Church, therefore, will be directly involved in living out this Holy Year as an extraordinary moment
of grace and spiritual renewal. Thus the Jubilee will be celebrated both in Rome and in the Particular Church as a visible
sign of the Church’s universal communion (ibid).
Pilgrimage has long been a traditional practice of a Holy Year. Pope Francis writes, The practice of pilgrimage
has a special place in the Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a visitor, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination.
Similarly, to reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any other place in the world, everyone each according to his or her ability
will have to make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that mercy is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion: by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to
embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us (ibid. #14).
The Faithful of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist invite you and the faithful of your parish to come in pilgrimage to the Cathedral sometime during the Holy Year. Fr. Antonio Eguiguren, OFM, the deacons, parish staff, and I
are available to you to assist in every way possible. The faithful are welcome to come individually or in organized groups.
Please find enclosed the regular schedule of both weekend and weekly Masses and confessions in the Cathedral.
We welcome organized pilgrim groups to the Cathedral (i.e. Legion of Mary, youth groups, Knights of Columbus,
Guadalupanos, Cursillistas, prayer groups, etc.). If a group wishes to celebrate special liturgies or prayer services as part
of the pilgrimage we will do our utmost to accommodate such events Phone: (208) 342-3511 Fax: (208) 342-1564
www.boisecathedral.org CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 707 N. 8th Street Boise, ID 83702 in the Cathedral. Please contact the Cathedral office to schedule such visits (please remember the Cathedral, as every parish, is
a place for weddings and funerals of its parishioners). Also, it would be most helpful if a group brought their “own clergy.”
Nonetheless, Fr. Antonio and I will be available to groups as best we can or help arrange assistance with other clergy in
Boise.
On Sundays the Cathedral is open throughout the day, from before the 8:00 a.m. Mass until after the 5:00 p.m.
Mass. On weekdays it is open from the 8:30 a.m. Mass until approximately 4:00 p.m. On Saturdays it depends on scheduled events, but is open from approximately 3:00 p.m. until after the 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass. Guided tours of the Cathedral
are available with the Cathedral Docents; these tours too can be schedule with the Cathedral office. Throughout the Holy
Year prayer cards and booklets, in English and Spanish, will be available in the Cathedral entry for personal prayer and
reflection.
Please make this information known to the faithful and groups of your parish in the manner you judge best.
Again, I invite you and the faithful of your parish to come in pilgrimage to our historic and beautiful Cathedral. We of the
Cathedral wish to be of service to you in any way we can to help make such pilgrimages beautiful and meaningful experiences.
“Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old” (Psalm 25:6).
