ATTACKS ON GOD
Destruction of oldest Christian monastery in Iraq
Satellite photos obtained by The Associated Press confirm what
church leaders and Middle East preservationists had feared: The
oldest Christian monastery in Iraq has been reduced to a field of
rubble, yet another victim of the Islamic State group's relentless
destruction of heritage sites it considers heretical. St. Elijah's
Monastery stood as a place of worship for 1,400 years, including
most recently for U.S. troops. In earlier millennia, generations of
monks tucked candles in the niches, prayed in the chapel,
worshipped at the altar. The Greek letters chi and rho,
representing the first two letters of Christ's name, were carved
near the entrance. "Our Christian history in Mosul is being
barbarically leveled," said Father Paul Thabit Habib. “We see it
as an attempt to expel us from Iraq, eliminating and finishing our
existence in this land.”

SAINT MARY PARISH
Dear parishioners,
Last week, I was looking at the parish sacramental statistics
for 2015. These were the numbers for last year: 63 people, a
majority of them infants, became Christians through baptism.
There were 39 First Holy Communion recipients, and 36 adults
and young adults were confirmed. Some of those who received
First Holy Communion and Confirmation were also received into
the Catholic Church. This means they were baptized in another
Christian denomination but wanted to become Catholics. Eight
people became Catechumens last year in anticipation of
becoming Christians in the future. Twenty-five couples were
united through the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. This included
seven couples who were wedded at Mass on February 14. Fiftythree people were buried with funeral rites from the Church.
Give thanks for all the grace that flowed through here last
year. Of course, numbers don’t tell the whole story… or even
close to it. We don’t count the number of people who received
the Sacraments of Healing through penance and the anointing of
the sick, yet we do know that confessions were heard almost
every day of the year. There are a huge number of confessions
being heard in this parish compared to most other parishes. We
also anointed hundreds and hundreds of sick people at the
monthly anointing Masses, visits to the hospitals, nursing homes,
and people’s homes. Again we can say thanks be to God. And
thanks be to God that the grace of God reached even just one
person – for them it may have meant everything. Let us continue,
without focusing on numbers, to bring people to the grace of
God through the Sacraments… and avail that grace to us as much
as possible and whenever necessary for our lives and salvation.

your consistent stewardship to the parish to cover our expenses.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In the Gospel today, Jesus show us that we are called to place
Gospel values before any other values and to be willing to put
our lives on the line for them. Taking care of God’s poor is
indeed living Gospel values.
Our living the Gospel is what must shape our everyday choices.
We must act according to the teachings of Christ, never
according to those of the world. Praying for the poor can bring
the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt,
loneliness and dread.
We pray for the grace to proclaim the Gospel in our lives. May
we live the values that Jesus taught. We pray that our words and
actions bear witness to Christ. May we live the values that Jesus
taught. We pray that we may bring hope and healing to the sick
and suffering. May we live the values that Jesus taught. Amen

SAINT CHARLES PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
This Saturday evening, January 30, the 4:00 PM Mass will be
celebrated by Fr. Brian Kiely. Fr. Kiely is the Episcopal Vicar
for the West Region of the Archdiocese. Prior to this, Fr. Kiely
was the pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish in Natick. The word
‘Episcopal” comes from Ancient Greek meaning ‘bishop’. Our
bishop is Cardinal O’Malley. So Fr. Kiely is Cardinal Sean’s
vicar or representative responsible for our part of the
Archdiocese. We are happy to welcome him. Please introduce
yourself to him if you have time after Mass. – Father Michael

SNOW CANCELLATION POLICY
When there is a weekend snowstorm requiring us to cancel catechetical classes, we alert the radio and television stations. We
request that they say “St. Mary’s Religious Education Classes
canceled.” Sometimes they say “St. Mary’s canceled or closed.”
That is incorrect. We still celebrate Sunday Masses even when
classes are canceled.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 31, 2016
Espíritu Santo, quien renueva nuestros corazones mientras
