attend a Pre-Jordan meeting prior to baptism, which is arranged
at a mutually convenient time.

St. Alphonsus, the man who
founded the Redemptorists in Naples in
1732, is the patron of Moral
Theologians, confessors, and of those
suffering from arthritis. He also wrote
100 books in his lifetime. One of his most
famous publications was his treatise on Moral Theology.
Statues of Alphonsus are typically portrayed with him writing
in a book with a quill. Thus, as sons of Alphonsus, we strive
to be good, wise, and gentle confessors to the people who
come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation in search of God’s
mercy and forgiveness. Here at St. Peter’s / Shrine of St.
John Neumann... we have the opportunity to have a gracefilled encounter with Christ everyday, that may equip us with
the tools necessary to live a redeemed life. As a priest who
listens to the struggles and human weaknesses of countless
pilgrims and parishioners trying to find their way, we
Redemptorists walk with you on “Holy Ground.”
In the old days, the priest would meet the penitents
“In the Box” - meaning the confessional. No matter where
the sacrament takes place; in the car, on the sidewalk, in the
kitchen, in the office or parlor, at a reception, or in the
parking lot… where sin abounds… grace abounds all the
more! It is truly one of the most humbling and blessed places
to be as a priest. I recall the line of the 1994 classic film,
Forrest Gump, where Forrest exclaims: “Momma says,
LIFE…is like a box of chocolates… you just never know…
what you're gonna get!” The same could be said when
priests hear confessions. People come in from all walks of
life and carry with them heavy crosses and burdens. Many
come exhausted, frustrated, overwhelmed with guilt, angry,
and ashamed. Humbled by the patterns of addiction (gossip,
sexual, overeating, smoking, drugs, alcohol, gambling,
infidelity, laziness, etc.) and these struggles have brought
them to their knees in the hope of an experience of healing in
their desire for Christ’s Redemption and to be re-created and
made anew.
Being a relational person, I have never really
preferred the “behind the screen” method of celebrating the
sacrament. However, through the years I have come to
understand it’s appeal and the wisdom of it’s architectural
presence. If it weren’t there, those who feel embarrassed
and/or ashamed may not have the courage to even approach
the sacrament. Not only does it shield the penitent with a
sense of anonymity, but serves to shield the priest as well.
Many priests are very shy in social settings. I often feel this
way when serving in my pastoral roll, a place where I feel
more relaxed and comfortable, perhaps a type of “alterego.” But frankly, if I had a dollar for every time I shed a
tear as I listened to the trials and tribulations of folks just on
the other side of that screen, I’d be a very wealthy man. So
sacred and humbling is that “Holy Ground” when we enter
into the suffering and pain of another. The Latin root of the
word “Compassion” means to “suffer with,” and so we
priests can truly feel the heavy-hearted pain of those who try
day-in and day-out to follow Christ and his Gospel. As Saint
Paul reminds us, “It is in my weakness…that I am made
strong!” This is the meaning of what St. Alphonsus and the
Church refers to as “Paschal Mystery,” that is, the Christian
vocation to embrace the cross in our life, with all it’s pain
and struggles, in order to experience the new life and an
experience of redemption that waits for us on the other side
of that cross. Therefore, in a spirit of true repentance may
we…”Firmly resolve, with the help of God’s grace, to do
penance, and to amend our lives”… Amen.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (CCD)
Religious Education classes for children will begin during
the 1st week of October. You can register in the parish
office. Please bring your child’s birth certificate, baptism
certificate (if baptized), and the registration fee of $50 for
one child, $75 for families with two or more children.
RCIA
If you or someone you know has never received First Holy
Communion or Confirmation, or perhaps you are interested
in being baptized into the Catholic faith, please register for
RCIA classes in the parish office. Classes will begin in the
fall.
