A Spanish verb is regular when, if you know the infinitive, you can predict all
other forms of the verb. A verb is irregular when some of its forms can not be
predicted from the infinitive. These forms are learned individually as a result of
hearing or reading them frequently. To make it easier for you to remember
irregular verbs, we can learn about them in groups whose members have something
in common.
“Yo” verbs
In the present tense, only the “yo” form of these verbs is unpredictable. These
unpredictable “yo” forms often contain a g that is not a part of the infinitive.

Stem changing verbs
These verbs change a vowel in all but the “nosotros” and “vosotros” forms of the
present tense. Four patterns exist:

Long stem changing verbs
Verbs whose stems contain more than one vowel usually change the vowel in the
second syllable.
preferir
comenzar
empezar
prefiero, prefieres, prefiere, prefieren

When the conjugation of stem changing verbs is written out with singular forms in
the left-hand column and plural on the right, the forms which change their stems
take the shape of a boot, which gives this group the nickname “boot verbs.”
