PASTOR’S REFLECTION
Twenty –Ninth Sunday in Ordinary
Time
October 19, 2014
Dear Friends,
As we ponder on God’s Word proclaimed today:
•
Do political Leaders ever demand things of me that
I should rightly give only to God?
•
How do I take my political responsibilities seriously
while still giving my primary loyalty to God and the
things of God?
As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you
with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your
dear family abundantly each day. Please pray for me.
In Christ,
Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro

JUSTICE FOR ALL
Scripture reminds us that God transcends all things.
Even the great Persian king Cyrus was an instrument
of God. And Caesar’s power was not absolute. Some
things belong to the state and others belong to God.
Jesus reminds us that government has an essential
role to play but our ultimate allegiance must be to
God. We are called to advocate for those who are
denied human rights by voicing our opposition –
respectfully – and to seek solutions that benefit all
God’s people.
“Everyone… needs to give priority to one of the most
urgent goals for the human family: freedom from
hunger... it is necessary to ensure not only that enough
food is available, but also that everyone has daily
access to it… to guarantee fully the right to food.”
-- Pope Benedict XVI, Message for World Food Day,
2010. Adapted from Lectionary Reflection at

A MINUTE IN THE CHURCH;
ONE MINUTE CATHOLIC
APOLOGETICS
Apologetics- the branch of theology concerned with the
defense and rational justification of Christianity (in our
case, Catholicism).
Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who
asks for a reason for your hope. 1 Peter 3:15
Same Sex “Marriage”
Same-sex “marriage” is a real hot-button issue these
days. Many people are asking, “Why is the Catholic
Church so opposed to gay marriage?” First of all, the
Church proclaims loudly that all people, regardless of
sexual orientation or anything else, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. She also teaches that any
sexual relations, heterosexual or homosexual, outside
of marriage are sinful and immoral. The Church believes that marriage is not merely a human institution,
but a Sacrament, designed by God and given by Christ,
who quoted Genesis 2:24- “For this reason a man shall
leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife:
and they shall become one flesh.” So marriage always
has been and always will be the union of one man and
one woman in a sacramental bond. This is the way that
God has designed marriage, and human beings have no
authority to redefine it. Many will tout the fact that a
majority of Catholics today believe that gays should be
allowed to marry. But the Church cannot “change the
rules” and define doctrine by popular opinion. She is
tasked with teaching and upholding the truths that God
has given to mankind.
33 DAYS TO MORNING GLORY

ARCHDIOCESE OF MIAMI
HONORS WOMEN OF FAITH –
ST. JOHN NEUMANN’S JACQUI
DE SOUZA TO BE RECOGNIZED
For the first time in its history, the Archdiocese of Miami
will honor ten outstanding women from across the archdiocese for their work, dedication and commitment to the
Catholic Church with the first ever “Women of Faith”
awards.
In light of this celebration, a luncheon to honor the
awardees is scheduled for October 26 at 12 noon at the
Turnberry Isle Hotel, 19999 West Country Club Drive,
Aventura, FL.
A list of women who exemplifies one of ten virtues was
presented to Archbishop Thomas Wenski who then chose
from the list. The ten women being honored are:

• Marie Ludwick of St. Paul the Apostle Parish – Virtue:
Grace – Saint: Our Lady of Grace
• Carol Ann Coyle of St. Gregory Parish – Virtue: Humility – Saint: St. Anthony
• Sally Russomanno of St. Louis Parish – Virtue: Love –

• Marile Lopez of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish – Virtue:

Jacqueline De Souza is an exemplary example of a
woman of faith; living out the faith she was taught, living
in the faith that she caught, serving others through her
faith so that all she encounters might know the love and
mercy of God in her joy. Our Parish Family is so proud
of Jacqui and congratulate her on this recognition.
Anyone interested in attending the luncheon individual
tickets are sold at $150 and table sponsoring is also
available. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit
Catholic Education by providing tuition assistance to
needy students. For pricing contact Martha Velasquez at
