MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

Fifth Sunday of Lent
THE NEW COVENANT
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the
term “new covenant” he was actually doing
something quite radical. For the Jewish
people, there was only one covenant, the
one made between the Lord God and Israel
through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah
to suggest that God would somehow
supersede the covenant with a new one
would have sounded audacious to Jewish
ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the
Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the
past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today’s
Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the
language of his “new commandment” of love when he tells
of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self
in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare
to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an
excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self-sacrifice to
which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant
written deep within our hearts.

LA NUEVA ALIANZA
Cuando el profeta Jeremías creó el
término “nueva alianza” hacía algo muy
radical. Para el pueblo judío, sólo había
una alianza, la que el Señor Dios había
hecho con Israel por medio de Moisés en
el Monte Sinaí. Cuando Jeremías dice que
de alguna manera Dios va a reemplazar
la antigua alianza con una nueva, seguro
que sus oyentes pensaban que era algo muy atrevido. De ese
modo Jeremías es un predecesor de Jesús, quien, en el Evangelio
de Juan se presenta siempre como alguien que reemplaza el
pasado, estableciendo el Reino de Dios de una manera nueva.
Y en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús, “la nueva alianza”
habla con el lenguaje del “nuevo mandamiento” de amor cuando
menciona el grano de trigo que muere y nuestra propia muerte
al egoísmo para poder resucitar con Cristo. Al finalizar la
Cuaresma y al prepararnos a entrar en la Semana Santa, el
grano de trigo que muere es un símbolo excelente del tipo de
muerte y auto sacrificio al que los discípulos están llamados,
un símbolo de esa nueva alianza escrita en lo más profundo de
nuestro corazón.

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on March 26. All are
invited to attend. The bishop will bless the Holy Oils
which are used in sacramental celebrations throughout

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we near the end of our Lenten journey, we will soon experience
the High Holy Days. Through our Lenten journey with Christ, we should
be prepared to understand and embrace the sufferings of Jesus in our
hearts so that we can fully appreciate the significance of his gift to us,
namely, our salvation.
Take to heart Psalm 51, which is a penitential in nature and read the
words carefully measuring every passage as we honestly seek forgiveness of our transgressions. Embrace the graces bestowed on
those who faithfully hear and act upon the words of forgiveness of our
Lord. . . although our hearts and spirit maybe lacking, broken, weak or
misplaced, through an honest effort of faith in Christ, we will be made
one with Christ.
In the First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah, early on tells the people
of Judah that God will create new covenant with them. All prior covenants have failed because Israel did not respond to God’s love. The
new covenant (a covenant not of stone tables will be for all people!!).
The new covenant will be successful because it will be God and God
alone who will put into the hearts of the people power to respond with
love (called grace). Jesus is that new covenant. . . Jesus is truly fully
God, he is truly fully man and his vocation is to God. Jesus served the
Father by his prefect obedience though he agonized, was fearful of
death, and he suffered in his human form. Yet, he became prefect and
learned obedience through his suffering, which is our eternal salvation.
In the Gospel of John, often called John’s version of the agony in the
garden and in the Second Reading of Hebrews we learn that Jesus
struggled in his mission, he “offered prayers and supplications with
loud cries and tears” that he might be saved from death. But, Jesus
knew that his purpose was to do the will of the Father in the fulfillment
of the new covenant. A terrifying image crosses my mind of sheer terror thinking about the prospect of having to endure what Jesus did for
us in his obedience to God. Could I do likewise? Thank God, literally,
that we do not have to undergo this same test of obedience. What we
are call to do though is to take up the cross daily in service to Christ
and for our brothers and sisters. We are also asked to bring the word of
Christ to all who are seeking or are in need of his word and love. Yes,
this call of service maybe sometimes difficult, terrifying, daunting, uncomfortable, calls for too much discipline, and to think of helping people we judge as unworthy. Jesus has provided us with his example on
how we should carry forth his love and he has made our reward quite
clear. Let us, therefore, in the final days of Lent, apply ourselves to the
love of Christ in service to the Father, to one another, to our community, and to our world. Seek Christ, ask forgiveness, and be filled with the
Spirit of the Lord as we prepare for the Most High Holy of Days of the
year.

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Estamos casi al final del camino cuaresmal, pronto experimentaremos
los Días Santos. A través de nuestro camino cuaresmal con Cristo,
debemos estar dispuestos a comprender y aceptar el sufrimiento de
Jesús en nuestros corazones para que podamos apreciar
completamente el significado de su regalo, es decir, nuestra salvación.
Medita el Salmo 51, que es una celebración penitencial y lee las
palabras con cuidado, reflexioando cada versiculo y buscando honestamente el perdón de los pecados. Abrazar los dones que se ha derramado sobre aquellos que fielmente escuchan y actuan conforme a
las palabras del perdón de nuestro Señor. . .Y, aunque nuestro corazón y espíritu estén debiles, rotos o extraviados, a través de un esfuerzo honesto de lnuestra fe en Cristo, seremos uno con Cristo.
En la primera lectura, el profeta Jeremías, les dice al principio
al pueblo de Judá que Dios creará un nuevo pacto con ellos. Todos los
anteriores pactos habian fracasado porque Israel no respondió al amor
de Dios. El nuevo pacto (pacto de tablas de piedra no será para todas
las personas!). El nuevo pacto será un éxito, pues será Dios y sólo
Dios quien ponga en el corazón de las personas la fuerza para
responder a su amor (gracia). Jesús es el nuevo pacto. . . Jesús es
plenamente Dios y verdaderamente hombre y su vocación es la de
Dios. Jesús sirve al padre con obediencia perfecta a pesar de que
sufrió, tuvo miedo a la muerte, y que sufrió en su forma humana.
Sin embargo, El era prefecto y aprendió la obediencia a través de su
sufrimiento, que es nuestra salvación eterna.
En el Evangelio de San Juan, a menudo llamado la versión de Juan
de la agonía en el huerto y en la segunda lectura de Hebreos vemos
que Jesús tuvo problemas en su misión, él "ofreció ruegos
y súplicas con gran clamor y lágrimas" para ser salvado de la muerte.
Pero Jesús sabía que su propósito era hacer la voluntad del Padre en
el cumplimiento de la nueva alianza. Una imagen aterradora cruza mi
mente de angustia pensando en la posibilidad de tener que soportar lo
que Jesús hizo por nosotros en la obediencia a Dios. ¿Podría yo hacer lo
mismo? Gracias a Dios, literalmente, que no tenemos que someternos
a esta misma prueba de obediencia. Lo que estamos llamados
a hacer, sin embargo es a tomar la cruz de cada día en el servicio a Cristo
y a nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Se nos pide también llevar
la palabra de Cristo a todos los que lo están buscando o tienen
necesidad de su palabra y de su amor. Sí, esta llamada al servicio
puede ser a veces difícil, aterradora, enorme, e incómoda, creemos
que pide mucha disciplina y al pensar en ayudar a las personas
muchas veces nos consideramos indignos. Jesús nos ha
enseñado con su ejemplo de cómo debemos llevar adelante su amor y
que esperar como recompensa. Apliquemonos, pues, en los días
finales de la Cuaresma, a comprometernos en el amor de Cristo al
servicio del Padre, a los demás, a nuestra comunidad y a nuestro
mundo. Buscar a Cristo, pedir perdón, y llenarnos con el Espíritu del
Señor mientrás nos preparamos para celebrar los Días más Santos
del año.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
As we approach Holy Week, the creative
juices of the ancient church of Jerusalem
begin to shape our journey. In old Jerusalem
at this season of the year, the attempt was
made to recall the events leading up to
Christ’s passion. Those attempts were
based not only on time, with celebrations
of events as close to the day and hour as
possible, but also on people’s best guesses
as to the actual place of these events. Vast
numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during
the 40 days of Lent, many of them catechumens
in their last stages of preparation for initiation.
The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria
wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her
experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy,
which involved hearty singing, strong
preaching, and nimble processions across
vast and arduous terrain.
Much of this energy was lost over the
centuries, with the procession of palms a
noteworthy exception. Northern climates
had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy,
using forsythia, willow, or olive branches,
but to this day the entry into Holy Week by
a community on the move accompanied by
joyful song hearkens back to a venerable
tradition. Egeria’s letters were rediscovered
a little more than a hundred years ago,
but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full,
conscious, active participation, to which
we have a right and a duty.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Basándose en las palabras de Jesús,
Mariano de Blas, compuso su canto: “Entre
tus manos”. Este hermoso canto nos recuerda
que “hay que morir para vivir”, es decir, que
no es nada fácil ser discípulo de Jesucristo.
El mismo Jesús nos pide que nos neguemos
a nosotros mismos (Mateo 16:24); que
carguemos la cruz para seguirlo (Marcos 8:34);
que perdamos nuestra vida por su nombre
(Lucas 9:24). Todo esto porque Jesús
reconoce que el grano de trigo debe morir
para dar vida, para multiplicarse (Juan 12:24).
El canto: “Una espiga dorada por el sol”,
de Cesáreo Gabaráin, nos recuerda que los
cristianos somos trigo del mismo sembrador.
Es Jesús quien nos siembra, nos cultiva, nos
cosecha, nos tritura, nos amasa, y nos hace
un solo pan consagrado a Dios. Somos
granos de trigo que, unidos formamos el pan
de la comunión que es comunidad. Para
esto, cada uno debe morir a sus egoísmos y
preferencias. Morir a sí mismo tiene sentido
cristiano, sólo si es para trabajar unidos y en
la misión de Cristo, la cual es salvación del
mundo y construcción del Reino de Dios.

parishioners have stepped up to help pay on pledges in memory
of two of our deceased parishioners. If you are able and
interested in this great act of kindness, please speak to a
campaign member after Mass or call the Parish Office.
Muchísimas gracias a todos los que han hecho su compromiso a
la campaña y gracias también a los que han hecho sus pagos a
tiempo. Estamos contentos de informarles que dos feligreses
han ayudado a hacer pagos de las promesas de los feligreses
que murieron sin haber completado su promesa. Si te gustaría
