 FEATURED NEWS 
Seminarian Grant Thies Speaking Next Weekend
Each summer, seminarians visit as many parishes as possible throughout
the diocese, speaking at the Sunday Masses. This year as last, one reason
for the visit is to thank the people of the diocese for your great generosity toward Priests for Our Future, the 2014-15 capital campaign to endow
seminary education. The talks are also intended to encourage more
young people to consider a vocation to the priesthood or Religious Life.
Next weekend, Grant Thies will be speaking after Holy Communion
at all the English Masses here at our parish. Originally from Elkhorn,
Grant was an active member of our parish as a young adult before entering the seminary. He has already done two years of pre-theology in Detroit and two years of theology at St. Paul, MN. God willing, Grant will
be ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Madison at the conclusion of the
coming academic year, and a priest in the summer of 2018.
Street Closings Next Sunday
Next Sunday, July 31st, the annual Ride the Drive event will result in
street closings from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The greatest inconvenience will
be for those who normally come downtown on John Nolan Drive. They
will need to use a different way into the isthmus. The good news is that
the arterial streets through the isthmus—Johnson eastbound and
Gorham westbound will be open. Those streets cross the Ride the Drive
route in a couple of places, but police will be directing traffic through
those intersections.
Those coming to St. Patrick for the 11:00 Mass might want to use
Butler Street (one block west of St. Patrick) to cross East Washington Avenue. Police will be directing two-way traffic through that intersection.
Those coming from the southeast could use Williamson Street—again
police will allow traffic to pass from the head of Williamson Street to
West Wilson Street. For a map of road closures, please visit www.city
ofmadison.com/ride the drive.
There will be no street closures to affect the Masses on Saturday or
Sunday evening.

Tim Mergen, a seminarian of our diocese, was assigned here at the Cathedral Parish this June, before departing for language studies in Italy
and the beginning of his theological studies in Rome.
While Tim was here, he and his mother taped an episode of The Journey Home for EWTN. Tim’s mother, Denise, converted to the Catholic
Church from the Church of Christ when Tim was five years old. Their
Journey Home episode will air for the first time this Monday evening at
7:00 pm (CDT) on EWTN. It will be repeated five hours later, at midnight.
Change in Friday Afternoon Mass
Effective this coming Friday, July 29th, the Friday Mass at Holy Redeemer
Church will be celebrated at 7:00 pm in Spanish each week, rather than being bi-lingual at 5:15.

Shortly after I arrived for my first assignment downtown in 1994, I hired
Chris Konkel to do maintenance work
at Holy Redeemer. That was 22 years
ago already! With the linking and then
merging of our three predecessor parishes, Chris' responsibility has grown to
include the maintenance of all three of
our parish sites. It's a big job! In more
recent years, some medical issues have
limited Chris' mobility to the point that
it is now difficult for him to do this
job. Regretfully, I now need to announce that Chris will be leaving his position at the end of next month.

Ordinations to the Diaconate
Within the next week, Bishop Morlino will ordain three new deacons.
This coming Friday evening, James Kotch and William Gonzalez Cedeno
will be ordained deacons at St. Aloysius Church in Sauk City. Both these
men are preparing for the priesthood as members of the Society of Jesus
the Priest. The Society currently staffs churches in many towns of our
diocese: Sauk City, Roxbury, Mazomanie, Platteville, and Fennimore.
So it is likely that these new deacons will be serving in our diocese at
some point.
Then next Sunday, Bishop Morlino will ordain Jim Hoegemeier, a
member of St. Albert the Great Parish, as a permanent deacon at that
church in Sun Prairie. It is expected that Jim will serve as a deacon in his
home parish.
Let us pray for these men in these last days before ordination as we
likewise pray for all our diocesan seminarians, and for Chris Schmelzer
and Todd Burud, of our parish, who are in formation to serve as permanent deacons here in our parish.

Registration for Religious Education is approaching. Enrollment will
begin on August 3rd and end on August 26th. Classes are offered for
Grades 1-7, as well as Confirmation beginning in the 8th grade. Be sure
to register early as class size will be limited to 20 students per grade!

preparation classes, if you plan to have them receive the Sacraments next

Catholicism 101
We offer a monthly 3-session overview of the Catholic Faith for adults at
St. Patrick Church that occurs every other month. The series is intended
especially for (1) those seeking a basic introduction to Christianity and/
or the Catholic Church, (2) parents with a child to be baptized, and (3)
couples preparing to be married in the Church. Session I will next be
offered Tuesday, September 13th, with sessions II and III on the following two Tuesday evenings. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm.

 PARA REFLEXIONAR 
A medio camino... empecemos hoy
Nos encontramos a medio camino, en la mitad del año.
Ha transcurrido ya tiempo desde aquellos primeros días de enero en
los que pisábamos el flamante camino con un
paso un poco cauteloso, con una incógnita en el
corazón, pero también con una alforja llena de
buenos propósitos. Empezábamos el camino
nuevo, mejor dicho, no había camino, ahora se
ha hecho camino al andar.
Es bueno volver la vista atrás y hasta quizá
hacer un alto en este tan personal sendero para
ver qué ha sido de todo "aquello" que nos propusimos con auténtico afán de mejorar. ¿Somos,
aunque sea un poco, algo mejores? ¿Vamos
cumpliendo con aquellas metas que se nos antojaron que podíamos alcanzar? ¿Los que nos rodean podrán decir que hemos cambiado, que se
nos nota diferentes y que ahora nuestro trato y cercanía es una agradable
realidad?
Tal vez nos han pasado cosas, muchas cosas inesperadas, quizá dolorosas, tal vez hemos encontrado muchos obstáculos, más fuertes de lo
que esperábamos encontrar para poder realizar todo aquello que con
tanto entusiasmo emprendimos pero... también quizá nos hemos ido dejando llevar por el cómodo "mañana" y ese, como es natural, aún no llega. No nos desanimemos. El comienzo de un nuevo año no es elemento
personal de cambio. Siempre se puede cambiar. Nunca es tarde. Empecemos hoy, desde este instante. Nada importa que hayan pasado los meses...lo que pasó, pasó, y en este momento lo que estamos viviendo es el
HOY.
Veamos al fondo de nuestra alforja de peregrinos, de caminantes
hacia la casa del Padre. ¿Todavía están aquellos propósitos, aquellos
buenos deseos?. Pues empecemos hoy. Ahora. Si era el dejar de fumar, el
beber en demasía y sin control, el comer desordenadamente, el abatir la
pereza, etcétera, hoy es el momento. No olvidemos que nunca es tarde
para decir: te quiero, para perdonar, para llamar al amigo o a la amiga
que teníamos en el olvido, para visitar a una persona que está sola o enferma, para ser más comprensivos, más tolerantes, para ser más generosos, más desprendidos, más cariñosos, más alegres, más puntuales, más
responsables de nuestros deberes y obligaciones, más cordiales, más humildes, más serviciales, más honestos, más pacientes, más serenos, más
limpios de corazón, más auténticos, más firmes en el cumplimiento de
las leyes de Dios, en resumen: más FELICES. No olvidemos a Dios en
nuestro diario caminar, Él es el único que nos dará esa fuerza para cumplir nuestros propósitos, que nos ayudará a amar más y mejor, Él es
quien nos da la verdadera alegría. No olvidemos su gran amor por nosotros. Porque vivir empeñados en todo esto nos traerá la PAZ y con la paz
en nuestra vida iremos haciendo el camino nuevo, que día a día, marcan
nuestros pasos, pero siempre con el esfuerzo y el empeño de ser cada día
mejores. EMPECEMOS HOY.

1. Hora Santa de Adoración—6:00 pm. Quien adora encuentra paz,
una paz desconocida para el mundo. La adoración aporta ante todo llegar a la intimidad con el Señor y ahondar esa intimidad.
2. Misa de Viernes—7:00 pm. Vamos a Misa este y todos los viernes.
Digamos “Sí” a Jesús, y vengamos a participar de Su Santo Sacrificio
de Amor por nosotros. Tengamos en cuenta lo que dijo San Alfonso
María de Ligorio: “El mismo Dios no puede hacer una acción más sagrada y más grande que la celebración de una Santa Misa.”
“Ride The Drive” Domingo 31
“Ride the Drive” (Paseo sin Carro) es el domingo 31, y las calles estarán cerradas de 8:30 am a 3:00 pm. El mayor inconveniente será para
quienes normalmente vienen por John Nolan Drive. La buena noticia
es que Johnson con dirección al este y Gorhan con dirección al oeste
van a estar abiertas. Estas calles cruzan “Ride the Drive” en algunos

grado. Los formatos de inscripción estarán disponibles en el kiosco a partir del 30 de julio. Pueden llevar los formatos de inscripción con los
documentos y pago correspondiente a la oficina
parroquial los miércoles, jueves y viernes de
8:30 am a 12m y de 1:00 a 2:00 pm. También estaremos recibiendo inscripciones en el comedor de
Holy Redeemer los sábados 13 y 20 de agosto de
9:00 am a 12:00 m. para su comodidad.
En el momento de la inscripción, se le pide que
entregue copia del acta de nacimiento y cualquier
certificado que pueda tener si recibió otro sacramento. El depósito, no-reembolsable del 50% por
niño, se paga al momento de la inscripción.
Procuren inscribir a sus hijos lo más pronto
posible, ya que hay un límite de 20 alumnos
por grado. Es muy importante que sepan al
grado escolar que su hijo(a) va en el otoño.
Catequistas
Adultos Jóvenes
Recuerden que mañana comienza la competencia de futbol. Los juegos
se llevan a cabo en el campo de atrás del Bishop O'Connor Center. Los
juegos de futbol son el 25 de julio, 1 de agosto y 8 de agosto. Si quieren
ser parte del equipo de deportes de la Parroquia de la Catedral, envíenle un correo a Rhiannon Buehler a [email protected].
El equipo compite contra equipos de otras parroquias Católicas en la
“Liga de deportes de Lunes por la Noche.”
SE BUSCA
La parroquia de la Catedral desea contratar a alguien por tiempo
completo para mantener los edificios, los equipos, y el ambiente de
los tres locales que pertenecen a la parroquia:
El puesto requiere:
• conocimiento en plomería, electricidad, carpintería y sistemas
de aire acondicionado, calefacción y caldera
• operar los equipos de mantenimiento tanto para cortar el césped, remover la nieve y salar las veredas/calles en invierno
• habilidad de comunicarse bien con los demás trabajadores de la
parroquia (ser bilingüe)
• tener buen manejo de tiempo
• tener transporte (vehículo) y una licencia de conducir válida
• documentación para trabajar legalmente en los EEUU.
El puesto está disponible a partir del 1 de septiembre. Comunicarse
con el Monseñor Holmes para solicitar el puesto.
¿Desea compartir su fe con otros y aumentarla
a la vez? Ofrezca su tiempo como catequista a
jóvenes de nuestra parroquia. Las clases son de
9:00 a 10:30 am los domingos, dejando tiempo
suficiente para llegar a la misa de las 11:00 am.
Las clases comienzan el domingo, 18 de septiembre y terminan el domingo, 30 de abril. Se

Sacramentos para Adultos
Los adultos que necesitan el Sacramento de Bautismo, Primera Comunión o Confirmación, tendrán dos alternativas para acudir a clases:
1. Si se sienten cómodos con el idioma inglés,
las clases son los martes de 6:30 a 8:30 pm en
el salón parroquial de St. Patrick. Cuando
llamen a la oficina parroquial, pregunten por
Marc Laudonio.
2. Si prefieren español, las clases son los miércoles de 6:00 a 8:00 pm en el edificio de Educación Religiosa. Las hojas de inscripción están
en el kiosco. Al momento de la inscripción,
entregue copia del acta de nacimiento y, si ya
recibió algún sacramento, copia del mismo.
