MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

Fourth Sunday of Lent
RAISED UP BY THE MESSIAH
Last week, when Jesus referred to the
destruction of the temple, the account
from today’s first reading is what would
have come to the minds of his listeners.
But, as Jesus was speaking on a deeper
level, so does today’s first reading. In the
first paragraph we hear that Israel had, in
effect, “fallen” already through its infidelity
to the covenant. Lest we get too cozy, this account reminds
us that God, though just, loving, and merciful, is capable of
punishing sin when that sin is unrepentant. But we are also
reminded that God, rich in mercy, anoints individuals to be
vessels of salvation as well (in Hebrew, King Cyrus of Persia is
called “messiah”). In the Gospel reading, we hear of another
Messiah being “lifted up” for our salvation in one of the
best‑known passages from the New Testament. As Lent
concludes and we enter Holy Week, we need to keep our gaze
steadfast upon the cross of Christ, the Son of God who came

LEVANTADOS POR EL MESÍAS
La semana pasada, cuando Jesús se refería a
la destrucción del Templo, el relato de la
primera lectura de hoy es lo que les hubiera
venido a la mente a sus oyentes. Pero, dado
que Jesús estaba hablando en un sentido
más profundo, así también debemos entender
la primera lectura de hoy. Escuchamos en el
primer párrafo que Israel en efecto ya había
“caído” a causa de sus infidelidades contra la alianza. Para no
ponernos demasiado cómodos, este relato nos recuerda que Dios,
aunque justo, amoroso y misericordioso, es capaz de castigar el
pecado cuando es un pecado no arrepentido. Pero también nos
recuerda que Dios, rico en misericordia, unge a individuos para
que sean a su vez instrumentos de salvación (en hebreo al Rey Ciro
de Persia se le denomina “mesías”). En la lectura del Evangelio,
escuchamos de otro Mesías que debe ser “levantado” por nuestra
salvación, en uno de los pasajes más conocidos del Nuevo
Testamento. Al terminar la Cuaresma y entrar en la Semana Santa,
debemos mantener nuestra mirada fija en la cruz de Cristo, el Hijo
de Dios que vino al mundo para levantarnos a todos los que
habíamos caído.

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
The readings this weekend, in many ways echo the trials,
tribulations, frustrations, joys, and love of a parent with respect
to their children. Only in this case, we are the children and God
is truly our Father.
In the First Reading of Chronicles, God, in a manner of speaking
has “come to the end of his rope,” after having sent so many
of his messengers and prophets to his people to plead with
them to give up their sinful, disobedient and destructive ways.
But. like rebellious children, they ignore Him and chose instead
to live a life of darkness, infidelity and abomination. What is
a parent to do? Often the answer is to punish the insolent
off-springs, and this is what God does. He allows the Kingdom
of Judah to be overtaken, and for nearly seventy years, the
Jewish people suffer in exile.
The end result is that the lesson is learned by the exiled
Jewish nations and God hearing their pleas relents when He
“rouses the spirit” of King Cyrus who commissioned the Jews
to go Jerusalem to build a temple to the Lord God of heaven.
The love and mercy of God is further expressed in Ephesians
and the Gospel of John. God has such a great love for us in spite
of our transgressions. His salvation for us is a free gift when we
express and live our faith while doing good works in the name
of Jesus. Yes, He continues to forgive us and loves us as do
many parents of their sometimes “prodigal children.” We
should not take for granted the love extended to us and should
not take lightly the passage in the Gospel of John “. . .that God
so loved the world. . .he gave his only Son. ” God did this for
our salvation. Let us, therefore, embrace the right to be called
true heirs and children of the light and let us prefer the light to
darkness. When we fall, do not fear being condemned for
deeds that maybe exposed, but rather go to confession and
reconciliation with the Father. Lent is a special time of reflection to
discern our relationship with our Lord and a time of rebirth our
baptism, but most of all time to be union with Christ.

Las lecturas este fin de semana, en muchas maneras revelan
las pruebas, tribulaciones, frustraciones, alegrías, y el amor de
un padre con respecto a sus hijos. Sólo que en este caso, somos los
hijos y Dios es verdaderamente nuestro Padre.
En la primera lectura de las Crónicas, Dios, de alguna manera
"ha llegado al final de su cuerda", después de haber enviado
tantos mensajeros y profetas a su pueblo a anunciarles que
abandonaran sus maneras de vivir pecaminosas,
desobedientes y destructivas . Pero, como los hijos rebeldes, lo
ignoran y eligen vivir en un mundo de tinieblas, infidelidad y
abominación. ¿Qué deben hacer los padres? A menudo la
respuesta es castigar al insolente y eso es lo que Dios hace.
Permite que el reino de Judá sea derrotado, y durante casi
setenta años, el pueblo judío sufren en el exilio.
El resultado final es que la lección es aprendida por las
naciones judías exiliadas y Dios escuchar sus súplicas cuando
"levanta el espíritu" del Rey Ciro comisionado por los judíos de
Jerusalén ir para construir un templo al Señor Dios de los
cielos.
El amor y la misericordia de Dios se expresa en Efesios y el
Evangelio de san Juan. Dios tiene un gran amor por nosotros a
pesar de nuestras rebeliones. Su salvación para nosotros es un
regalo cuando expresamos y vivimos nuestra fe haciendo
buenas obras en el nombre de Jesús. Sí, él sigue perdonandonos y
amandonos como lo hacen muchos padres a veces con sus
"hijos pródigos." No hay que dar por hecho el amor que nos ha
brindado y no debemos tomar a la ligera el texto del Evangelio
de san Juan". . .Que Dios amó tanto al mundo. . .Le dio a su
Hijo único." Dios hizo esto para nuestra salvación. Abracemos
pues el derecho a ser llamados verdadero herederos
y hijos de la luz y escojamos la luz a la oscuridad. Cuando
caemos, no temamos ser condenado por hechos que tal vez
expuestos, sino más bien ir a la confesión y a la reconciliación
con el Padre. La Cuaresma es un tiempo especial de reflexión
para discernir nuestra relación con nuestro Señor y un tiempo
de renacimiento con nuestro bautismo, pero mas que todo es
la unión con Cristo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
With the dissipation of the catechumenate’s energy since almost everyone
was born into the Church, Lent began
to be seen more as a preparation to
follow the Passion of Christ with
devotion. In the city of Rome, creative
spirits settled on “stational churches”
as a way of keeping the energy flowing.
Everyone would be directed to a
certain “station” each day, and the
name of that church provided a theme
for the liturgy. So, for example, on
certain Saturdays in Lent, everything
centered on the church of St. Vitale.
Now, this poor fellow had been thrown
into a hole and covered in stones at
his martyrdom, so the readings
recalled Joseph thrown down the well
by his brothers, and the wicked servants
killing the son of the owner of the
vineyard. Gradually, travelers to Rome
noted the celebration and worked it
into liturgical schedules back home.
Eventually, calendars everywhere
bore the curious footnote on a Lenten
Saturday: “Station S. Vitale.” This
served the priority of getting ready to
hear the Passion fairly well, but was
hardly satisfactory for Lent’s baptismal
character. Now, at last, our liturgy is
reorganized to serve the deepest level
of our tradition exceedingly well. Lent,
once again, is all about baptism.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Los católicos en general y los
latinoamericanos en particular, somos
muy dados al uso de imágenes y símbolos
religiosos para acercarnos a Dios o para
sentirnos más cerca de él. En realidad el
cristianismo entero es así, gracias a la
encarnación del Hijo de Dios. Hay quienes
critican el uso de imágenes, pero
recordemos que Jesús usó imágenes para
explicar cómo es Dios. En el Evangelio de
Juan (3:14) Jesús recuerda que Moisés
había hecho uso de imágenes para sanar
a los hebreos.
En Números 21:4-9 Dios le pide a
Moisés que haga una serpiente de
bronce y la levante en alto de tal forma
que los hebreos puedan verla. Muchos
de ellos habían sido mordidos por
serpientes en el desierto y al ver la
imagen de bronce sanaban, gracias a
Dios. El pueblo de Israel se quedó con
la imagen. No obstante, con el paso
del tiempo olvidaron que era sólo una
imagen y comenzaron a adorarla hasta
que el rey Ezequías se vio en la necesidad
de destruirla (2 Reyes 18:4). Las imágenes
pueden ser útiles para recordarnos la
presencia y misericordia de Dios, pero
no permitamos que se conviertan en
ídolos.

¡Meta
Alcanzada!
I have some very exciting news! We have reached our
capital Campaign Pledge Goal of $1,350,000. Congratulations
to all of you that have made this happen. Although this is an
exception accomplishment, our Campaign is not over. Every
pledge is a promise to pay, and until all promises have been
paid, the Campaign continues. We have been receiving
payments for the past 20 months and we have received over
$687,00 so far, and we still need to collect $663,000 to fulfill
our pledge goal.
Tengo buenas noticias para compartirles! Hemos alcanzado la
meta de nuestra campaña Capital de $1,350,000. Felicidades a
todos los que lo hicieron posible. Aunque hemos logrado la
meta en promesas la Campaña aun no termina. Cada
compromiso es una promesa a pagar y mientras eso no suceda
la campaña continua. Hemos estado recibiendo pagos por los
pasados 20 meses y hemos recibido un total de $687,000 hasta
ahora, y todavía necesitamos recaudar $663,000 para completar
la meta.
It is extremely important for all of us to continue making
our payments as promised. Presently we have 21 pledges
totaling $32,980 that we have NOT received a single payment.
We also have 5 parishioners who have sadly passed away and
were not able to complete their pledges totaling $6,701. We
have a parish family who were friends with one of the deceased and stepped up to complete their deceased friend’s
pledge in memory of them. If anyone if interested in doing
this, please let us know.
Es extremadamente importante que todos continuemos
haciendo nuestros pagos a tiempo. Al presente, tenemos 21
promesas con un total de $32,980 de los cuales no hemos
recibido ni un solo pago. Tenemos además 5 feligreses que ya
fallecieron y sus promesas equivalen a un total de $6,701. Una
familia de la parroquia que era amigo de uno de estos ya
fallecidos decidio pagar la promesa en memoria de su amigo.
Si alguien está interesado en hacer eso dejenos saber.
Again, I would like to thank the 800+ pledgers who are each
sacrificing for this noble cause. We should be very proud of
this great journey that we have accomplished together as a
community. If you have not participated in this “Journey
Together in Building our Faith,” remember that it is never
too late to join the campaign.

También tomo esta oportunidad para agradecer a las más de
800 familias que se han sacrificado por esta noble causa.
Debemos estar orgullosos de este logro incredible que hemos
alcanzado como comunidad. Si aun no has participado en este
“Viaje Juntos en la Construcción de nuestra Fe”, recuerda que
nunca es tarde para unirte a la campaña.
