MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

LENTEN FASTING REGULATIONS
1) Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednesday, and
Good Friday.
• No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence.
• Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from
meat. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.
2) Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
• Fasting means having only one full meal to maintain one's
strength. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are
permitted according to one's needs, but they should not
together equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods
between meals is not permitted.
• Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast.
Again, invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Readings for the weekend are a reminder of the graces of our Lord bestowed upon His people and the preparation
by His faithful who are about to undertake a personal Lenten
journey with Christ in fulfillment of God’s promise.
Water, the element of life is prominent in the Readings from
Genesis through 1 Peter. The water (flood) written about in
Genesis prefigures baptism and God’s promise “never” to
destroy earth with water. The flood or water gave a new life
to Noah and all of the living creatures. In 1 Peter, baptism is
our spiritual coning coming to life—it is our way of ritually
participating in Jesus’ death. The death of Christ is life producing
because of his faithfulness to the Father. Just as Noah was
rescued from an evil world of his day by water, so are we
rescued through the waters of baptism.
As God is always faithful to His children, we are called to seek
Him always through Jesus. Christ was tempted by Satan in the
desert and so we too are tempted in the desert of life by the
allures and trappings of this world. The key is for us to be
confident in the Lord who forgives our transgressions. But
also equally important to recall is that Jesus struggled with
Satan. . .but he remained steadfast by not succumbing to sin.
Jesus is our mediation and example of God’s never ending
love, no matter how broken we may feel or act. The very
power of God is available to all who openly and honestly
open themselves to Jesus by expression of reconciliation and
dedication to his purpose of love and caring for their neighbor.
Jesus started his public ministry after spending 40 days in
the desert and he knew God’s Plan . . .he did not waver in his
purpose though he was aware of the ultimate sacrifice he had
to undergo for us. Let us therefore be resolute in our discipleship
by imitating Christ and experience Lent with him ever by our
side in the darkness and in his loving light of forgiveness. Let
us also recall our baptismal promise, be therefore changed,
assume the work of Jesus, and become one with the body of
Christ in the fulfillment of the Gospel of God. Father Enrique

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Las lecturas para el fin de semana nos recuerdan de la gracia
que nuestro Señor concedió a su pueblo y de la preparación
de sus fieles que están a punto de emprender un camino
cuaresmal con Cristo en cumplimiento con la promesa de Dios.
El agua, el elemento de la vida, es uno de los principales
temas de las lecturas del Génesis a través de la 1a. Carta de
san Pedro. El agua (inundación) escrito en Génesis prefigura
el bautismo y la promesa de Dios de "nunca más" destruir la
tierra con agua. La inundación o agua dió una nueva vida a
Noé y a todos los seres vivos. En la 1a. Carta de san Pedro, el
bautismo es nuestro aliado espiritual y es nuestra manera de
ritualmente participar en la muerte de Jesucristo. La muerte
de Jesucristo produce vida por su fidelidad al Padre. Al igual
que Noé, que fue rescatado de un mundo de pecado en su día
por agua; así somos rescatados nosotros a través de las aguas
del bautismo.
Como Dios es siempre fiel a sus hijos, estamos llamados a
buscarle por medio de Jesúscristo. Jesucristo fue tentado por
Satanás en el desierto, y por lo tanto, somos tentados en el
desierto de la vida por los encantos y adornos de este mundo.
Para nosotros la clave es confiar siempre en el Señor que
perdona nuestros pecados. Asi como también es importante
recordar que Jesucristo luchó contra Satanás. . .Pero se
mantuvo firme para no caer en el pecado. Jesucristo es nuestro
ejemplo del amor infinito de Dios, no importa que mal estemos
o nos sintamos. La fuerza de Dios está disponible para todos
los que honestamente le abren su corazón a Jesucristo amando
y cuidando al hermano.
Jesús comenzó su ministerio público después de pasar 40
días en el desierto, y él conocía el plan de Dios . . .No vaciló en
su propósito, aunque estaba consciente del último sacrificio al
que iba a ser sometido por nosotros. Por lo tanto, debemos
mantenernos firmes en nuestro discipulado, imitando a
Jesucristo y experimentando la Cuaresma con El en nuestra
oscuridad y en su amorosa luz del perdón. Recordemos nuestra
promesa bautismal de ser cambiado, asumir el trabajo de
Jesucristo y convertirnos en uno con su cuerpo en el
cumplimiento del evangelio de Dios.

First Sunday of Lent
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten
spring-cleaning regimen. Almost every
religious tradition recognizes that
fasting is a key to heightened spiritual
awareness. You know this from your
own experience. When you are
engaged in a hobby, painting a room,
keeping vigil near a delivery room, or
standing watch at a sickbed, you may
simply forget to eat. What you are
doing so fills you that the intensity of
the action is itself nourishing. In fasting
from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors,
you make room for what is truly
important.
Even though Lenten Sundays stand
apart from the Lenten fast, you will
notice traces of fasting in our liturgy.
We fast from singing the Gloria and
Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking
the altar, and there may be a noticeable
drop in the number of infant baptisms
as parents elect to wait until Easter.
This hints that fasting is a prelude to
feasting, and the vigor of our Easter
alleluias is rich fare after a long
silence. In the same way, even a small
fast—no cream in the coffee, no
pepper in the soup, no radio in the
car—cannot only point to deeper
hungers, but help us rejoice more fully
in the feast when we break our fast
together.

Según un dicho árabe, si quieres conocer
bien a una persona, debes convivir
durante cuarenta días con ella. Cuarenta
no puede tomarse al pie de la letra, ya
que en las culturas semitas de siglos

El pueblo de Israel pasó cuarenta años
en el desierto purificándose de sus
pecados. Jesús ayunó cuarenta días en
el desierto antes de iniciar su ministerio
público. El profeta Mahoma tenía
cuarenta años cuando Dios lo llamó;
asimismo, según el Islam, Dios creó a
Adán en cuarenta días, y la persona que
desea sabiduría necesita ayunar cuarenta
días.
No se sabe de dónde viene esta conexión
del número cuarenta con la religión.
Algunos astrónomos piensan que es
debido al planeta Venus. Venus (estrella
matutina) viaja por el cielo regresando a
su lugar de origen cada cuarenta años
menos cuarenta días.

TALLER DE ORACIÓN Y VIDA
LUNES—9:15 AM & 7:00 PM
¿Sabes dialogar con Dios? Los talleres de
Oración y Vida son un servicio para aprender
y profundizar en el arte de orar. Se aprende
a orar de una manera ordenada, variada y
progresiva a través de 15 sesiones donde la
persona se sana y libera de angustias,
miedos, tristezas y ansiedades. Si no sabes
relacionarte con el Señor ésta es la oportunidad
para aprender. El taller empezó el Lunes, 9
de Feb a las 7:00 pm en el Salón No. 2.
Tendremos un taller por las mañanas a las
9:15 que empezó también el 9 de Feb. Para

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
There will be Stations of the
Cross every Friday during Lent
beginning February 20th. The
stations will be prayed in Spanish at
6:15 p.m. and in English at 7:00 p.m.
Tendremos el Via-Crucis en Español todos
los Viernes durante la Cuaresma a las 6:15 pm.
Nuestra Campaña Capital ha alcanzado un
monto de $1,345,000 en promesas hasta este
momento. Muchísimas gracias a todos los
